Massive incompetence everywhere. Orders wrong, deliveries missed, websites fucking up. I’ve never seen anything like this.
What the hell is happening? We’re supposed to be at the pinnacle of civilization with technology and AI ushering in utopia but these last few weeks have been the biggest clusterfuck I have ever experienced in the holiday season.
Amazon suddenly canceling every order on my husband’s account because their algorithm suspects fraud, when he’s using the same card and sending things to the same address (ours) he’s had for years.
I order a product made in New Zealand from their U.S. branch, pay $8.99 U.S. National freight, get a receipt saying PAID IN FULL and told it will ship from a U.S. warehouse, and next I get an e-mail from New Zealand demanding $65 more dollars international freight because it ships from NZ. I go back and forth with some Kiwi and have to dispute the charge with my bank to get them to cancel the whole order and refund my money.
I order an iPad for hubby for Christmas, get a text from Apple saying it’s been delivered, but no iPad has arrived.
I reorder CPAP masks, CLEARLY EMPHASIZE that I need the N30i masks, and they send me six N20 masks.
I ordered blue cheese from iGourmet and FedEx tracking says it will be delivered Monday, but it came today! Okay that was a screwup in reverse and a good thing, but it threw me off; made me fear I had inadvertently ordered it twice and am going to get a second box of it Monday.
Nobody can get anything right. What the Hell is wrong with everybody!?

I bought some tires online fron Sam's Club and scheduled installation at 8am. I show up at 8 and the sign says tires opens at 9. Oops. At 9 the guy appologizes and says he can do it right now. Oops, they do not have my tires in stock.
I did get the work done the following week and am very happy with my new Michelins.

My wife was ordering stuff from Amazon and suddenly had one canceled. I've ordered a couple of things online from Lowes the last two days for home delivery and had them with in hours.
-
One thing I've noticed about Amazon, two day delivery very seldom happens anymore a more things you order really come from another vendor.

I asked Grok about that Amazon canceling thing and he said Amazon has gotten very aggressive with the anti-fraud algorithm because the scammers are now using AI to mass order stuff. Hubby ended up deleting his payment methods, then re-entering them and that seems to have fixed it but it makes zero sense. He received no replies from his support request.
Which reminds me, I received a very unhelpful reply to my request to the Texas DMV which has canceled their online process to renew your vehicle registration. They are now requiring INDIVIDUALS to create an ID account, tied to your social security number and your drivers license renewal, before you can renew a car registration and you can only do cars titled to you.
Which means I can no longer do the renewals for all my husband’s cars and trailer.

I don’t know how many times I’ve said, “Get one of your retired boomers back in to show you how the hell to do this you morons.”
I'm told nobody under 35 knows how to terminate Cat5 cable anymore. Despite hardwire connections being much safer and more stable than WiFi. They aren’t even wiring up new construction afaik, they probably aren’t even putting phone jacks in anymore. The ISPs now provide MESH WiFi as standard. I guess it’s because Gen Z has no idea how to work a desktop; they do everything on their phones.
Don’t get me started with that. At my job, one by one, all the websites are “upgrading” to minimalist interfaces with indecipherable icons and disappearing menus. Nobody cruises these sites for fun, they’re for work, do you expect me to believe people are doing all their work on a cell phone now? It’s INSANE.

I did clean up my wife's payment methods. She had old cards in there that were long ago canceled.

Apparently deleting the card wipes the database along with any “bad boy!” flags it accumulated. Re-enter the same card it starts with a clean slate. That seems to be what happened with hubby’s account. It’s all computers, no human involved. We are careening into utter dystopia at light speed.

Had an Amazon order awhile back with 3 items ordered. Kept getting delay emails and then they cancelled the order entirely. Past week or so ordered Christmas presents and everything delivered except a bottle of wheel cleaner for the vehicles, which was cancelled. Did get a new mini iPad without any problems surprisingly.

The message hubby usually got was order has been denied but don’t worry we will try it again soon. Then they cancel it without trying it again. Except one time they did try it again, and it went through, after hubby already ordered the item on another account, so now I have TWO “I survived my husband’s knee replacement” t-shirts.
So stupid. This is NOT the bank refusing the transaction. That’s a whole different can of worms. This is internal to Amazon. So Amazon itself is the one refusing the purchase, then attempting it again with their own selves. NUTS.

On the other hand, I'm constantly amazed at what they do right. I need something and I can't find it. It's easier and cheaper to just buy another one and have it delivered the same day than to search the house. Someday I'll find it and then have two, but the job will be done. The "subscribe and save" from Amazon for the stuff we use every month is pretty good, too. It's a little frustrating when something is not available or there's a substitution. But overall, the service is great.
I've also had something take really strange trips around the country before it gets here. It gets to some Amazon warehouse a few miles from here, then gets sent back to Ohio or something for a few days and then back again. Or it gets scanned at the point of departure and then disappears for a few weeks until it finally gets scanned again a few miles from where it started. Fortunately that's pretty uncommon. I just got an empty bag with a large slit in the side delivered. Nothing inside. Whatever was in there is long gone in a truck or plane somewhere. We're negotiating with Amazon on that one.

We’ve had the same. There are certain “black holes” where a package will get stuck per tracking inexplicably for a few days. Then get unstuck and eventually get here. Things have gone off to random places, I expect it got put on the wrong plane at some hub.
But you’re right, they do mostly get it right and with the huge increase in online ordering since Covid, combined with the general increasing dysfunction of society, it’s amazing it works as well as it does.
Our actually delivery drivers are GREAT. Are friendly, work long hours, and rarely is an issue their mistake, but somewhere upstream of them.
