I try to log into my credit union. It says I must change the password. I put in a new PW, it says, in HUGE RED FONT: UNABLE TO UPDATE PASSWORD. IF YOU FAIL 3 TIMES YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE LOCKED AND YOU HAVE TO CALL THIS NUMBER...
I try one more time, same fail. Not gonna try a third. I call their number. I get: "Welcome to our new AI assistant. Please state your debit card number."
"I don't have my debit card"
"Would you like me to wait while you find your debit card?"
"ok"..... pause.... looking for card....
"I cannot wait much longer. I will have to hang up soon."
"I cannot find the card, I WANT TO TALK TO A HUMAN - NOW!"
"Okay I will transfer you to a representative."
The human is very friendly and helpful. I explain my password change problem. Turns out I was using the automatic password generator and their site does not allow that. You must MANUALLY TYPE IN YOUR NEW PASSWORD. OMFGYGBFSM. Why couldn't the huge red message just tell me that?
She got my login all straightened out and I made sure to tell her to tell her bosses I HATE that new phone AI: the best thing about that credit union is you get an AMERICAN speaking human every time who is very friendly and helpful and I hope they keep the same HUMAN customer service, and don't make me go through an AI phone tree to get to them. She said the AI is for people who just want to do something simple like get their balance but the credit union is dedicated to keeping access to humans easy and straightforward. I hope that is true!
Now I need to go drink a bottle of whiskey or something.
The thing is, nowadays, every single thing i try to do, I run into this sort of crap.

I just hit the zero button over and over. 99.9% of the time after 4 or so, it connects to a person.

I used to use that technique but ran into a couple of automated systems that would either (1) hang up or (2) endlessly repeat the menu.

I remember I had to take a board exam for a third world country. I didn't get very far when I realized that I needed to dumb myself down to pass the exam. You are living amongst low-information idiots. You need to think like them for AI to work.

Not just dumb but evil. The whole reason I have to change my PW in the first place, and they no longer allow me to use the random password generator, is everybody has to beef up security to match increasing cyber threats. It’s becoming so dystopian.
I feel like I’m turning into my mother, bitching about “these newfangled flip phones”. She HATED mobile phones. Never understood them.

I don't understand how they can prevent a "random" password generator from being used. Is that they don't allow you to cut&paste the new password into the field?

I've had to change passwords where they disallowed most special characters that generators use and they had limits on the number of characters that most generators exceed.
I hate passwords.

I do the same. Works 99% of the time.
I’m going to start doing that from now on.

It was a random password generator integral to my browser and somehow their site knew it. I have no idea why they have a problem with it. Maybe I could have used my password safe (which is separate from my browser) to generate one and copy/pasted but the lady said to type it in.

I'm guessing the lady on the phone isn't exactly an expert. May I suggest that next time you try a cut&paste?

Well the drag and drop from my password safe works to log in now. I don’t know about that password reset page. You’re right, she probably didn’t know. She was just trained to tell people to type it in.
