Title: solar powered weather reporting equipment
Post by: Bob Noel on May 15, 2016, 03:35:37 PM
I was watching This Old House the other day (recorded) and one of the Weather Channel guys was on talking about weather reporting equipment.  New stuff is solar-powered.  Hmmmm, solar-powered.  So, that equipment needs to be kept out of shady areas.  It needs to be where there is sun.

Can anyone think how that might effect (affect?) the recorded data?

I don't know which equipment you're referring to specifically, but it's likely that the solar power charges batteries which powers the equipment. It's not a bad idea if you're living off grid or in an area that's not hooked up to power. Also if the power goes out you have a backup means for weather reporting. In terms of aviation use, think about a dirt strip in the backcountry or if you own land and have a strip there with no power at the runway.

I fully understand the concept of batteries and solar power for charging batteries.

Then I don't understand your OP.

If all of the recording equipment is in sunlight, will the recorded daytime temperatures be biased higher or lower or not at all?

Why are you assuming that the recording equipment will have to be in the sunlight just because the charging stations are?

Referring to my OP, the show showed examples of equipment, all of which had the solar panels directly attached to the equipment.  That is, none of the equipment shown could be used in the shade.

But did the solar panels create the desired shade of the measuring equipment?  If yes, it may be a good option without much deviation from actual surface temps which are taken 3' off the surface.

I didn't see the episode you describe.  Were they describing equipment designed to perform climate change analysis?  I don't think even the man-made climate change alarmists are foolish enough to make that large a change to the method of recording and comparing data.

But then again, who know?  They certainly have an agenda to protect.
