Title: Looked at a Skylane lastnight
Post by: Jaybird180 on May 26, 2016, 06:53:26 AM
I arrived at the appointed time, having read up on the airplane and fully prepared to hate it.  But I couldn't.  I thought the panel would be butt-ugly with things thrown in and stuck with bubble bum and duct tape, but it wasn't - everything was laid out in a logical fashion, for it had been upgraded continuously over the years.

My prospective partners and I are working out a few details, like where to keep it.  One of the reasons we believe it's in such good shape (77 model) is that it's been hangared and flown regularly (approx. 130hrs/yr) until about 2 years ago; the owners mission changed.

For me, this is the worst time to buy and airplane.  I shouldn't have looked at it.  Woe is me.

Good luck on this. Did you and your partners own a plane before this?

I will need a partner or two (or three) to get into a T-34. But on Saturday I was speaking to someone who said that airplane partnerships never work, and I shouldn't even try. It was kind of disheartening, but I'm not totally discouraged by the concept, at least not yet.

I have known several partnerships that worked out great.  The worst case was after about 3 years, one partner wanted out, so the other two bought him out.  Then later, one of the other partners wanted out so they put the plane up for sale.  It all worked out, but it would have been better if they had put the exit procedures in writing in advance.

I have been looking for a partner to go in on my Bonanza, but so far I have not found the right person.  People that have expressed an interest are looking for a $10k buy in for a $100k plane.

That all sounds great, and if it looks good too, I would certainly consider it.

I'd prefer the engine be injected.  And I would think that with ~2000 hrs on the engine, there might be a little negotiating room in the price.  Factoring in a new engine, you are looking at almost $100k for this plane.

It sounds real close to what I was looking for when I bought the Bonanza.

Yea, that plane will need 30k worth of engine in the not too distant future.

There was 3 of us and we're thinking about bringing on a 4th.  I've been in a partnership with my Skyhawk SP that I got out of about a year ago.  The other 2 have a partnership in a plane that recently had a gear up and waiting for repairs.  One of them is part owner of a flight school on the field.  The 4th guy is on his 2nd Skyhawk and is looking for something faster...I don't know why, he hardly flies the one he has now and from what I hear he's mostly a local flyer.

Of the 4 of us, I'm the only one with a family and the only one that likely will do XC flights over the weekends.

It all depends on the partners and how you structure it.

I was a partner in a 4-man C182.  Bob was a CFII, Walt was a mechanic, Dewey was a commercial, and I the lowly VFR Private.  We all got along, had a monthly meeting at the restaurant to settle the accounts, and we were self-contained, being able to do all our own training and most of our maintenance.  It worked exceedingly well.  I never had a time when
i  wanted the airplane and couldn't get it.  We did have to do an overhaul, but we had enough reserves to not have to take a big hit.

Excellent. That sounds like how they should work.

I have a 182P and love that thing. Not sexy but an awesome transportation machine.

Decent price for equipment, but know you will have a new engine on the horizon. 1500 TBO.

The O470 is a good engine, but since it will need a new engine soon anyway, does anyone know if it can be replaced with an IO 470, or even an IO 550?

The ad says 138 KTAS at 11.8gph.  My Bonanza has an IO520 w GAMI injectors, and when I run LOP I get 163 KTAS at 11.5gph.  Running ROP I get around 166 KTAS at 13.5gph.  That makes a big difference over time.  Plus the CHTs are lower.  3 KTAS is not a bad trade.

It's my understanding that engine is rated for the 2,000 hr TBO. If the mechanics' reputation holds true he would not have signed off on an  unairworthy engine.

BAD NEWS: I just read something that says that I can buy a share of the yet to exist LLC under my S-Corp. it's bad news because I can't claim lack of liquidity to purchase my share.

Okay guys: I need a reason NOT to buy this plane! HELP!

It doesn't have a stick

The 3rd wheel is in the wrong spot

It'll carry too much... you'll feel weird about flying around solo

Admit it, you really want a twin

Also,
It's a high-wing!
It's not a Bonanza!
You can't run it LOP.
It doesn't have a parachute.
You won't have any valid reason to turn down us big fat guys when we want to go up with you.
Your wife is pregnant (you didn't know about that now, did you?)   ;D

The one thing I don't like about the Skylane is the high panel/glare shield. I'm a tall guy @ 6'2" but I still feel that it limits visibility too much. I can only imagine that short pax might feel claustrophobic in the front seat.

Being past TBO in part 91 is not at all an airworthy related issue. It is merely a manufacture's recommendation. Many a birds are flying well past TBO that are "airworthy".

Verify your 470-U model TBO...not all U models are 2000 stock, only some of them.

Is that the surprise she is planning for me tomorrow?

The seller says he runs it LOP using the GEM.  11.8GPH @ 138TAS.

If it's not a good time to buy, skip it. Trust me, there are plenty more 182s nicer than this one coming at the same price, or less. I see nothing on the horizon that says airplane prices will be rising.

I admit that the equipment list has me really considering this one and the other Q models on Controller aren't comparable at this price point.

I admit that the equipment list has me really considering this one and the other Q models on Controller aren't comparable at this price point.

So here is what sold me on my plane even though it had a "run out" engine...I took the price I figured I could negotiate the plane to in its current state and added the cost of a rebuild and started comparing planes in that total price range...and even though I did not want to spent that total higher amount right then, I was still not finding a plane as equipped and as nice as I would end up with at that higher price point.

Three years later engine is till going strong and I got way more plane than I was expecting I would have even though I was and am prepared for that rebuild any time.

After discussions with my "partners" one of them bowed out due to being able to support the care and feeding of the machine.  The other said he'd let me know his intentions by noon today.  It's now nearly 2p.

I'm out.  I'm going to call the seller and let him know.  I'm kinda sad.  I was getting used to the idea of owning an airplane.  In fact, I need one this weekend.  I have a 1 day event I'd like to attend in NJ.  Now I have to get up super early so I can drive 3-1/2 hrs each way and get home about dusk.

While I am Grumman Tiger biased, I would have to agree.  The 182 is probably the best all around single engine GA airplane going.  I'm just not into trucks.  :)
