Title: Is there hope? Swiss reject guaranteed income
Post by: Bob Noel on June 06, 2016, 08:41:58 AM
AP is reporting that the Swiss voters overwhelming rejected a proposal to guarentee everyone an unconditional basic income of $2560 per month.
(no, I don't have a url... I read about it in a real newspaper)

Maybe there is hope that people understand the problems with handouts.

Final results from Sunday's referendum showed that nearly 77% opposed the plan, with only 23% backing it.

I have visited Switzerland twice.  When I first read about the proposal it surprised me, but I never for one second thought it had a chance of passing.  There is one reason for my certainty.  "PRIDE".

When we rode the trains all over Switzerland, it was obvious everywhere we went.  The Swiss have pride.  They show it by their actions and their words.  They show it by the care they take of their land and property.  We saw no litter anywhere.  No graffiti.  Lawns were all kept nice looking.  Houses were all neat and clean.  I had some luggage break and we went to a little repair shop.  The guy worked on it all night because he knew we were leaving in the morning. (he had to fashion some braces for the handle because it would take two days to get them shipped in).  He said his repair would be stronger and better than the original.  He charged me 1 hour labor because that is what he said it would have taken if he had the right parts.  He wouldn't take a big tip.

Even the ticket takers and gift shop staff went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of properly.

I couldn't imagine any of those people voting for such a spending bill.

And don't let their peaceful history fool you.  They are ready to fight.  Perhaps that is why they don't have to.

I'm glad to see they voted no overwhelmingly. With the way things are going here, the Democrats will try this at some point, even on a municipal level, as a test run. Give people "free" money and they'll never work again but continue to demand more.

I used to have to go to Switzerland for work regularly, but Zurich and Geneva, and I saw the same things as you.  Beautiful country, and I even managed a few ski trips to Davos.
