This is out of control.

If they scan a card and take money, couldn't that person just call their bank and say it was stolen and/or dispute the charge? They shouldn't have to go through that to begin with, but I'd think they could dispute it at least.

Another fantastic reason why nobody should be carrying a debit card. And maybe start leaving that ATM card at home as well and carry cash. We're returning full circle.

Cash?

They'll seize that in a heartbeat!

Yeah, but they can only get what's in your wallet, debit/ATM card and they've got the whole account. Imagine not being able to make a mortgage or car payment because of an overactive Barney?

I'm a cash guy myself, and use the credit card sparingly. I never use a debit card.

It is pathetically entertaining to see the people who are demanding $15/hour freak out when I pay a $12.08 bill with a Twenty, a nickel and three pennies, and expect change. Minds blown.

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."

Civil forfeiture has been out of control for a long time.  Are they going to stop me, read my ATM card and then say "Mr Flynn, you have $20k in your savings account, so we are seizing it?"

Yes, it's my SAVINGS account!!!!  I SAVE IN IT!!!!!

I've been wanting to move to cash only but find the debit card pretty convenient since just about everywhere takes it. There are a lot of benefits to having cash, though.

I prefer to carry rewards credit cards, and funnel as much as I can through them.

You do always have it processed as credit, right?

Is it wrong for me to want to smash the face of the guy in front of me at the local coffee shop who uses a debit card to pay for a $1.86 cup of coffee, and is being slow about it?

That doesn't bother me. It's the people who use a check at the busy grocery store who then feel the need to write it down on the ledger right then and there.

That's the idiocy of this whole thing.  Having $20k in savings is (believe it or not) atypical and puts you under suspicion for running an illegal operation.  You're right in the crosshairs of this.

I've converted to making all purchases on a CC.  Specifically, the Citi Double Cash card, which offers 2% back on any purchase.  Those savings add up. Swiping that card is quick, too, especially with places that don't require signature under a certain purchase amount.

Yeah, heaven forbid we actually have an American who saves for a rainy day and isn't subservient to the government or shark payday loan industry.

I would be if I carried that ATM card with me.  It's locked in the safe at home.  Of course my Roth is attached to the ATM (non debit) card that I do carry, so I guess I'm just screwed.

The issue is not what credit cards you have.  Credit cards aren't what they're really looking for unless the card carries a (large) positive balance.  They're looking for any card with a large balance, gift cards, etc.  The trouble is they're not really following any law in taking money.

I've been guilty of that a few times, though I do my best to be quick so I'm not holding up the line. Sometimes I just don't have cash on me when I purchase something, even as small as a cup of coffee.

Exactly. Having that amount of money doesn't (or shouldn't) make you a suspicious person by itself. If someone is able to save that much then good on them for being responsible and managing their money.
