Quote
In a Wednesday interview with Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, House Speaker Paul Ryan made a demonstrably false declaration about his efforts to pause the Somali refugee program.
During the interview, O’Reilly criticized Ryan for failing to message on immigration controls and asked Ryan specifically about the Somali refugee crisis in Minnesota.

O’Reilly: “We have a Somali problem up in Minneapolis-St. Paul. [We] have a problem there and those are refugees from Somalia. And if, God forbid, some refugee comes in and blows people up, it’s going to be grisly.”

Ryan replied by explaining that he passed a bill to pause the refugee program. Ryan said: “Right. Right. That’s why– just so you know that’s why we passed a bill pausing this refugee program, because we don’t think the refugee program works. That’s why we don’t want it to continue right now.”

However, Ryan did no such thing. The bill Ryan championed did not in any way pause the Somali refugee program– it applied solely to refugees from Syria and Iraq.

Ryan has no business being Speaker. There are a number of Reoublican Congressman more qualified and would do a better job. It's too bad that his primary challenger doesn't stand a chance at winning.

We are under no obligation to let anyone into this country and if they can't be properly vetted, they shouldn't be let in. That doesn't mean stop all immigration, though we certainly could and it wouldn't be an issue. It means that we should be very selective with whom we let in, but that goes against the liberal narrative.

“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers,” Ryan said in a back-and-forth

Too bad he doesn't believe in this when it comes to Obama.

We have tons of Somalis in my town.  The ATMS offer English, Spanish, and Somali.  We love them.  We really do.  They're here seeking a better life and they're willing to work hard to get it.

So if they are assimilating nicely, why do the ATMs need modifications?  For that matter, why do they need Spanish?

They don't "need" it.  They "have" it, because we are an accommodating people who love to draw all nationalities into the welcome fold of the American Dream.  :)

If you're coming to America to seek a better life then you need to assimilate into our culture, which means learning English. I'm not suggesting they forget their native language or culture, but we shouldn't cater to every individual group that comes here. Andrew Wilkow has a saying that corresponds to this:

Why do you believe they aren't learning English? And ATMs are privately owned. They put other languages on them because Capitalism. I assume you're not suggesting the government force private business to stop?

No, I'm saying that if you come to America because you're seeking freedom and a better way of life, then you should assimilate into our culture. I don't want people bringing their country here and transforming our country into theirs while draining our country of its resources.

The banks don't need anything.  They do what they do to promote their business.  Apparently, outfitting ATMs with multiple languages is good business.  Are you against letting businesses operate as they see fit?

I haven't seen an ATM without Spanish directions anywhere in quite some time.

Maybe. Trump is a good role model for my conversion to the dark side.  :)

A side track - It's really interesting to parse O'Reilly sometimes:

"We have a Somali problem up in Minneapolis-St. Paul. [We] have a problem there and those are refugees from Somalia. And if, God forbid, some refugee comes in and blows people up, it’s going to be grisly"

First of all, you have to question the premise of the question - do we have a Somali problem in Minneapolis?  I'd say that we don't quite know.  I would hesitate to say "We", I'd hesitate to say it's Somali and I'd hesitate to identify individuals living their lives as a "problem".

Then a double down - against stating "We", "problem" and "Somali".

But then...if ANYONE blows people, it's going to be grisly.  Not because they're refugees, not because they're Somali refugees, but people were blown up.  It's true no matter what.

So I read an opinion, a double down and a tautology in his stuff, but he presents it as fact.

He's another reason the Republican Party has imploded, yet ideologues such as yourself cannot see what a failure this career politician has been.

Paul Ryan claims he will sue a President Trump if he does anything unlawful, yet he sits back and let's Obama do as he pleases while he looks the other way.

Please explain to me one more time about how principled Ryan is.

For all his faults, Paul Ryan is vastly more conservative than Donald Trump ever have been and ever will be.

We aren't comparing him to Trump.  We are discussing what a phony he actually is and how he's sold out to his constituents.
