Title: Cato Institute on State of Free Speech - Very Sad
Post by: acrogimp on October 31, 2017, 01:05:22 PM
https://www.cato.org/blog/poll-71-americans-say-political-correctness-has-silenced-discussions-society-needs-have-58-have

Fascinating yet sad analysis from Cato Institute on the gap that separates us and the loss of true freedom of speech/political discourse - even the areas where there is common ground seem a bridge too far - this is the unfortunate and only possible result of the mean-spirited personalizing of so much of what should be 'just' politics - hopefully we can overcome but it seems as if the void may be too wide - I definitely self-censor not only my own posts but also my desire to reply to posts of friends since it seems we all have difficulty separating political disagreement from personal hate or fill-in-the-blank-ism - if we can't talk to each other respectfully and openly about important matters, how are we ever to move on to agreeing about what to do?

Very insightful. These results clearly show which side is more against free speech.

Also which side is more hateful and bitter. 61% of Clinton voters can't be friends with Trump voters but only 34% of Trump voters can't be friends with Clinton voters.

Also shocking how far away from facts and reality we've come. It is "hate speech" to state that whites and Asians have higher IQs than blacks. Wow!  I guess Thomas Sowell is a rabid anti-black racist.

It's also hate speech to say that psychological differences might explain why there are more male engineers than female engineers. Wow!!!  BUT IT IS TRUE.  And I am a female engineer. Why is it offensive to state something that's true? Am I supposed to be offended by that?

And why is it "hate" to believe transgenders have a mental disorder? That might not be correct or true but it doesn't necessarily follow that because a person believes it, that hate is involved.

This is really getting out of control. Somehow when I was a young college student I thought society was becoming more enlightened. I am disillusioned- instead we are regressing back into the dark ages of thought oppression.

Agreed. I have essentially turned my FB page into flying and family.  Life is too short.

I have relatives, and now former friends who dislike me because I voted form, and support Trump.  The family members are still relatively OK, although they make snide remarks.  The friends are no longer friends, and not by my choice.  I can agree to disagree then go have a beer.  They can't.

The Left/Progressive/Dems along with Education, and the Media want an oppressed society where we only think, and agree upon what THEY want.

That's because in their minds you are not just wrong/ignorant/misguided/have a different opinion; you are EVIL, as Dennis Prager has concluded.

The very sad part is that they know you are evil because you are hateful and intolerant and they absolutely hate and cannot tolerate that.  The irony is completely lost on them.

Justice Thomas talking about this during an interview - very rare for a justice to talk publicly.  Worth watching

Quote
"I think we're getting quite comfortable in our society limiting ideas and exposure to ideas," Justice Thomas said. "And maybe that's a symptom of it. I don't know."

As for the wave of historical monuments and statues being torn down across the country, Justice Thomas said people seem to think everything has to be "one size fits all," and others shouldn't have opinions or ideas that make them uncomfortable.

"We always talk about 'E Pluribus Unum,' what's our 'Unum' now?" he said.

I would add, what's our Pluribus now?

I think his words ring true.  Societal comfort with limits on thought, ideas, words, and symbols.  One size fits all.  If you go outside of the progressive PC box you are demonized as racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic, etc.  Hillary's DEPLORABLES.  From a country that celebrated Freedom of Speech, and Expression we have now moved to a society living in fear of retribution from our employers, government, friends, and family for the things we think, and say.

My youngest son is full on liberal politics hate Trump on his FB page.

I had to stop "following" my brother and his wife on FB because of their constant anti-Trump, pro-liberal agenda posts. Our relationship is barely hanging on by a thread.

He is my son and I love him and his family. We do not talk politics in person.

Likewise. We are family and will remain so but have stopped talking politics completely.

The light is always dimmest just before you change the light bulb.

A new day is coming. Trump is the first symptom of a major sea change.
We the People spoke and the far left is still furious to discover that there are people who actually think for themselves and do not fall under the spell of political correctness.

Their real fury is at a system that PERMITS people to ignore what they've ordered to think and say.

When you've surrendered your ideas to a limited, closed minded, echo chamber of stupidity, you would/might feel threatened by anyone that refused to do so, too.

Ignorance LOVES company and hates to be challenged by truth.

Look to the MMGW religion for proof of that.To those pathetic puppets, it matters not a at all that not even one single prediction has proved out. All that matters is that no one stray form the orthodoxy of their religious fervor. Those pathetic lemmings would make good nazis - oh yeah, their there already.

Which is also their real sin - that they think one person can order another to say, do or believe something.  It is born out of a lack of respect for others.

I was in a conversation with a leftie the other day and asked "so what is more important, everything being efficient or everyone being respected?"  He said that efficiency of society was more important than respect for individuals.  I was shocked, I really don't know how to respond to that.  I tried to say that was fine with me, I will be in charge and we'll make it more efficient.  He asked why me and I said "because I have the chains, the whip and the cotton fields and I need them efficiently worked.  Where can I come pick you up?"  He didn't tell me, maybe he doesn't really believe in efficiency.

It is amazing than many people, maybe most of them younger, I don't know, are OK with giving up FREE SPEECH in order to not offend anyone.  Where does it stop?  They keep citing "Hate Speech", but THEY get to define what hate speech is, and that can be anything they want.  Now hate speech is being defined by symbols like the American Flag, National Anthem, and statues of Washington, and Jefferson.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/millennials-communism-sounds-pretty-chill-2017-11-01

"According to the latest survey from the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, a D.C.-based nonprofit, one in two U.S. millennials say they would rather live in a socialist or communist country than a capitalist democracy.

"What’s more, 22% of them have a favorable view of Karl Marx and a surprising number see Joseph Stalin and Kim Jong Un as “heroes."

When you have teachers, and university professors preaching their enlightened, evolved form of "civilization" then this is what you get.  I wish they could live a few months under real totalitarian, communism, and see what misery really is like.  Over the past forty plus years the left has successfully usurped Education, and the Media to create generations of indoctrinated.

The funny thing about progressive professors who are in love with communism fail to realize one fact:  when a communist regime takes over one of the first groups to be removed, either through elimination (execution) or banishment (concentration camps) are academics.

That’s because academics rarely have any usable skills that the state can exploit to keep the wheels of corruption turning. Let’s face it. Academics lie, talk, spin, whine, and generally waste the time and money of people who do things.

Progressive academics are even less useful because they tend to HATE the rest of us.
