Title: Do I deserve another plane? What would you buy?
Post by: invflatspin on November 06, 2018, 01:37:37 PM
I've been a good boy. Kids though college, tuition's all paid, retirement pretty darn secure(could always have more, but we'll do fine), decent health, nice place to live, and a remote place to get away.

I'm thinking in the $60-100k range. Paying cash, I don't finance toys. Things not on the radar: rotary wing; Cessna(don't like them).

Sell the Bonanza?

What kinds of flying or trips would you want to do with any frequency?
Aerobatics?
Back country trips (e.g. STOL)?

I"m biased (we all are I imagine), but if you can live with a two seater, it is really tough to beat the economy and speed of an RV-6,7, or 9.

I have an RV-9A.  I regularly do 147Knts TAS at about 8-13k feet on about 6.25 gallons an hour.

I also have a 1946 J-3 Cub that is wonderful for low and slow.

And I'm President of Tango Flight and we have several RV-12 and RV-12iS planes.  They are also great planes, and if you want to buy one I'll make you a deal :).

Sell the Bonanza?
The ONLY reason I would sell my Bonanza would be to buy another Bonanza with air conditioning.  Then I would be in heaven.

Can't add the AC to your current plane?

Yeah, but . . .
The cost would be excessive.  I figure I could sell my Bo and buy a newer one with better avionics AND A/C and the difference would be less than adding A/C.

On the other hand, we really like and trust our Bo, so it might be a consideration next summer (March).

Excellent question. I want an acro, cross-country, amphib, STOL, 8 seat, Pressure, potty, jet/turbine/piston plane.

I will warn you. Their numbers don't add up. Quoted BTU of cooled air is impossible from the power input.

I have a B-Kool unit.  It is too much trouble to deal with all the time and the ice doesn't last long enough.  And then if we go on a X-Country, getting ice for the trip back is another hassle.  Not a huge hassle, but a hassle none the less.

And the biggest problem with the Bo is it's aft CoG, and these units just make it worse.  If I get another a/c, it will be installed up front where the added weight will allow me to put more of my useful load in the passenger/cargo areas.

You didn't pay attention. There are powered removable AC units now that are running off actual freon compressors. BTW, the Bo has a natural forward CG. Main tanks are in front of the main spare and front seat pax are slightly ahead of front spar. All loading aside from two front seats brings the plane INTO CG. However, the CG envelope of the Bo is a bit tricky. One could put the ice type in the rear seat, and aim the ducts at the front, which is what I used to do.

Thanks Dan. Here I am, knowing almost nothing about the RV type planes. The only thing I know is they are way over-priced compared to similar EXP planes. For some reason I checked out a side-by-side two seat RV and jaezus-on-the-cross they wanted $76k for the gold plated thing. I kept running the numbers in my head thinking of what else I could get for that kind of money. I was thinking Glassair or maybe an early Lancair of the same cost. Did not compute, but I hear they are good designs.

I just don't want another clunky, kludgy device that I have to move around when I want to load pax.
And I think you are wrong about the CoG.  But you are right that it is tricky.  As you burn fuel, the CoG moves even further aft.  If I want to carry 4 full size people, 3 of them have to sit up front.

$100K?  Buy a Yak and fly it for 5 years.

Learn formation, maybe aerobatics, care for a big round engine - it's fun.

The RV's do hold value pretty well.  Best bang for your buck is an RV-6A.  Just get one that has the newer rudder (or update yourself).  Since the 7 replaced it they can be had for a bargain.  If you look carefully you can find one with steam and a mid time engine for around $45k.

I love my RV-9A.  I built it myself and have about $100k in it, but it is a full glass panel IFR airplane, and I am the only person to ever act as PIC (not a big deal, but sort of cool).  I'm not sure what other plane out there can come close to it in performance and cost to operate or maintain.

Well ok, but you mentioned ice. The freon unit is self contained. I do understand about clunky stuff in the plane.

Not sure what you're doing about your Bo loading. But I can tell you that if you have full fuel and two 200Lb people up front you are out of CG forward on all Bo planes except maybe the V35A/B. All others will be forward of CG with that weight, from models 35-V35. The good news is that out of CG forward just has to be trimmed to solve. Out of CG aft in any Bo can be a death sentence.

Found RV-6 or 6A at around $50,000 on BS. Compare to: Glasair 1RG for $50k, faster, also acro and retract. Velocity 173, $55k, four place, same speed, no acro. Lancair 360, $55k, 190knots, light acro, retract(of course). Thorp T-18, TW 170 knots, light acro for $43k. Lancair 360 with loaded avionics, 190 knots, $60k.

I'm not complaining(well, maybe a bit), but again - I just don't see if I'm going EXP why I would over-pay by $4-8k for the RV brand. I did see one RV-6 for $45k that looked tasty. I'm not counting them out, but it's no miracle drug.

[edit: Ok, I'm sold on RV. Found my baby: https://www.barnstormers.com/classified_1351771_RV-6A+Priced+to+sell%21.html  Dan, are you going to head over to CO and insp for me?  ]

Gentleman acro with cross-country VFR capability via dead reckoning. At least it has plenty of panel space to insert missing nav/com avionics. I see it comes with a hand-held radio; if the seller will include a tablet computer with GPS you’ll have all the nav/com covered!

Sure, I’m just outside Austin, quick flight in the RV-9!

At first glance it looks like it could be a good plane.

Believe it or not, no radios is just fine with me. All I do when I get in a plane with radios is find out how to turn them off. Modern GPS and back up GPS with elec charts is about all I need. If I HAVE to talk to someone I will, but it's about# 57 of things I care about. Would like to have a nice music source.

Fair enough; sounds similar to my own style of flying.

They are good flyers and land like a dream. Outstanding design, and I think very good looking. Unfortunately, no matter if one fits 800HP on it, the plane will only go 117MPH in a vertical dive.   :)

A friend on our field has a South African T-6, and used to have an RV-3.  He sold that and bought a Thorp T-18, and recently purchased a Rose Parakeet. (Yea, I had to look that one up myself.  It’s a small biplane from the 1930s.  Talk about a put-put.)

My next plane will be an RV of some flavor.  I will have to buy one already built as I don't want to go through the wait of building something.  Rather fly than build.  And RV-6, or 7 would be perfect for me right now.

The wing loading on the T-18 at 'real' gross weights gives me some pause. Same with the hot little Lancair, and to lesser extent the RV family. Of course, the combined wing+power loading is good because most of them are over-powered somewhat, but for my mission, it looks like I'm not going to have fun getting in and out of high, hot, heavy locations with any of the fast 2 place planes.

I showed the little lady an RV-6A locally at a friends place and she said it doesn't hold enough stuff for us. Which is very true, we tend to take the proverbial kitchen sink along when we go somewhere. There are a few EXP planes with bigger baggage holds, but we also want the 4 seats for occasional pax back there. The bigger RV family are just too expensive. If I'm gonna pay 6 bills for a plane, it's gonna have more than the RV-10, maybe a Mooney.

My offer was accepted, we're in the process of insp starting tomorrow. May be a plane owner by this wknd.

Thanks, not a done deal yet. You didn't miss it, I haven't given any details. Aside from saying it has wings, fuselage, and pretty black tires, I will be keeping the details confidential to protect me from those who would/do wish me ill-will.
