Title: So how much immigration is too much?
Post by: bflynn on March 17, 2019, 08:38:27 AM
Immigrant is slightly back in the news thanks to the shooting in NZ and it prompted me to think of that question.  How much immigration would be too much?

For the few leftists who are bent on destroying the United States, their answer is any amount is ok.  You could suggest to them that 7 billion people would be moving here and they'd say "ok, that's great".  So they are ridiculous and I discount them as serious participants in the discussion.

Some immigration is ok.  The US is not anti-immigration, we are very much for immigration.  Under controlled circumstance and after at least minimal vetting of the people coming in.  I WANT immigrants here, I just want the immigrants that are going to contribute without screwing the place up.

I don't know what that number is.  But I suspect a great deal of the angst over immigration is over the fact that the actual number is uncontrolled.  It COULD be 7 billion people and we'd have no control over it.

I don't care as much about "how many" as I do "who" (as you said).

Two things locally come to mind.  There are a couple of local liberal groups around here that have two big issues.

1.  They are outraged that some of us want to stop illegal immigration and put more effective controls and procedures in place for legal immigration.
2.  They are outraged that local builders are clearing land (home of wildlife) and building subdivisions to house the burgeoning population.

Small nit.  As Immigration is a legal process, there can't be Illegal Immigrants only Illegal Aliens.  I want our government to secure our borders as it is both an economic and security threat.  Legal immigration is fine.

I keep hearing people say that, but I don't think the term immigrant implies following a legal process.  It is anyone that move elsewhere to take up permanent residence.   It can even apply to plants.

Semantics.

But what level. Would 100 million a year be too much?  How about 50,000?

I am sure the is a sociology answer.  My goal would be stability for existing resident. How can someone ask others to give up their comfort?

Again, I don't think you can put a number on it.  But I think it is imperative to stop illegal immigration.  And legal immigrants needs to meet some sort of standard.  They have to have something to contribute.

But I do think there is a need to accommodate  some legitimate asylum seekers.
That would need some numerical limit, but I don't know what that limit is.

If the immigrant has skills and /or investment capital that benefit America than the number is whatever the number of quality applicants is.

If the immigrant is another parasite, bringing in disease, criminal, or has no,language or work skills that would insure they can pull their own weight, or there is no relative to sponsor and be responsible for them, then the number is zero.

It's not just semantics.  Calling them Immigrants gives them validity to be here.  They shouldn't be here, as they are Illegal Aliens, that should be penalized if they do come here illegally.

Agreed. Since when is it racist to demand that people wanting to come to the US should be a net positive for our society, and not a drag on it?  Oh that’s right, since the community organizer destroyed every gain made in race relations over the last 50 years.

The “Beer Summit” in 2009 with the racist Harvard Professor and the cop was the first sign that this is getting fucked up. It only went downhill from there.
