Title: OSHKOSH! (AirVenture for some)
Post by: nddons on July 15, 2019, 03:29:54 PM
I’m about to take a departure from SZ for a little bit. I work up at EAA on Flightline Ops, marshaling aircraft coming off of the runways. So I’ll be all Aviation, all the time for the next couple of weeks.

Here’s a video of what I do, filed by one of my fellow Flightline Ops volunteers:

https://vimeo.com/101124239?ref=em-share

Or:

https://vimeo.com/101124239

If you’re flying in, give your marshalers a nice wave and a thank you. We will be spending 3-4 hours at a crack standing on taxiways in the brutal heat (or rain and thunderstorms depending on the hour) keeping traffic moving safely.

Keep up the good fight in the Spin Zone while I’m gone!

It's fun to track where people are from by what they call it.  Most everyone calls it Oshkosh.  Except in Wisconsin where it's "The EAA".  Unless you work for EAA and then it's AirVenture.  Or you're an old fart in Wisconsin and it's "the convention".

Ha, I think I used all 3 in my OP. Yes, it’s a blast to see what people call it. Despite decades of marketing, AirVenture is secondary to Oshkosh or EAA.

Roger that. I flew a Warbird into the show the last two years, but will not this year, so everyone on the ground should be safe.

Just printed out my signs.  I'll be teaching Origami every day at the Activities Center (formerly the Craft Tent) from 1-2:30.

No one assaulted me last year, but I think I taught Origami to around 100 people. But what do you care?  You don't even go to Oshkosh.

How do you know?  I haven't gone for a few years, but have been several times in the past, and have flown there using Appleton as my preferred airport then took the shuttle down to Osh.

Did you see the smiley face?  It was said to be funny, yet we all know some don't have a sense of humor.

Smiley face can mean lots of things, including you liking that I got beat up.  Anyhow, I've never seen you there ever.  Not surprised you haven't the stones for the Osh approach though.

So before it was I didn't go, now it is my choice of airports in which to fly in?   How about traffic, convenience, and getting clearances out of Osh?  Ever think of that?

You haven't seen me there?  Well, I didn't think I needed your permission to go, or have to notify you of my attendance.  Jeez, Mike, didn't think you wanted to spend time with me there like that. :)

You seriously think I'd want to see you beat up?  Wow.  Paranoid much?

Sorry, flying hundreds of miles and then stopping short of one of the hardest approaches speaks to me.  I've been there every year for the last couple decades, so I was a little surprised I didn't run into you, even though its a big show.  I've only ever had one time it was hard to get in, and that was last year.  I've never had even a bit of trouble getting out, other than spending a long time taxiing in the heat.  Oh but the airplanes you see!

I suppose you're just too special to mix it up with the rest of us.  But according to me, in for a penny, in for a pound.  if you're going to go that far you should just got he rest of the way.  My goodness it's fun. if you have the stones for it, that is.  Not everyone does.

I don't even want to respond to him anymore.  Wow.

I will say this.  In 25 years of flying, I have never had a mishap, incident, nor accident.  NEVER.  Even flying a plane known for its unforgiving landing characteristics.  I doubt Michael can say the same thing.

Nobody made this about anyone's skills until you're statements about my choice of airports at Osh and my lack of "stones".

This thread should be about STAN'S tremendous job at Osh, and that he's earned the privilege to fly really cool airplanes.

If I may ask, what do you fly?

I had a Grumman Tiger for 16 years until a few years ago when I sold it due to a really expensive divorce!  It was worth it though!

The Tiger is not difficult to land, nor fly, you just have to pay attention to your speed on final or you will float all the way down the runway.  Some pilots try to force it onto the runway which creates pilot induced osculation, and potential prop strikes.  The solution if you are hot, high or both, is to go around and not force it to land before it is ready.

Thanks Anthony. No drama!  This is my vacation!  I’ll post some pics if I can.

One of my favorite times working Flightline Ops is at the end of the last shift of the day, standing out at the intersection of Twy Alpha and runway 13/31.  The departure conga line settles down, the last flight departs, ATC announces on freq. that the airport is closed per the NOTAM, and OSH settles into a peaceful quiet that it hasn’t heard since the Mustang fired up at 0600 that morning.

I’ll try to take a pic of that moment on Friday. It’s usually accompanied by a beautiful red sunset.

I’d second that. We’re on the same page.

I’d prefer those Merlin’s fire up around 0700, but still cool. I’m about 300 yards away from them in Warbirds camping when they fire up.

Unfortunately it looks like I will be only able to make a trip for one day this year. I wasn't able to get surgery earlier, and I will be borrowing my in-laws mobility scooter to get around. Funny thing is I plan to talk to some schools about transferring credits and flight training towards a degree, and talk to some of the regionals that are there about future career. Can't wait to see their faces as I roll up in a scooter!

No mistake. I’ve been following this online thinking that the ads in Trade a Plane or whatever was wrong. Since the owner seems to have flown it in and taped that to the fuselage I take it  as correct.

The Blue Angels did a surprise Monday flyover - heading 090 with a beg sweeping left 270 degree turn to 180 and depart to the south.

The Thunderbirds wouldn’t be outdone as they were at the nearby Milwaukee Air and Water Show, and did a mini routine on Thursday at 1430.

The Fairey Firefly, a British carrier-based Fighter was a magnificent restoration.

The XP-82 Twin Mustang was not really impressive to me. It just seems wrong. Aluminum wasn’t polished.

I didn’t see that. Of course the Tri-Motors were giving rides on the field. Bombers were giving rides out of Appleton. And a cool 2-seat P-40 was giving rides out of Fond du Lac.

At the North American Trainer Association annual meeting on Thursday they were giving away door prizes from a couple of cases of oil to a ride in the P-51 “Gunfighter”, and a P-40 ride.  They called the winner: “Stan.....XYZ.”  (Not me, but the winner was staying in the trailer next to me. He flies a South African T-6, and is also my AME.).  Damnit!!!!

And according to people who know these things (I spent 10 days in Warbird Camping, lots of knowledge there (as well as LOTs of gin)) that back seat isn’t a cobbled modification.  It was a factory “kit” that the USAAF had to make this single seat fighter into dual control aircraft.

Rides were $1,850. From the three that I know that took it (all already pilots who got to actually fly it including acro) it was worth it.

That's really neat. I am fortunate to live about 45 minutes from Reading, PA where they have the WWII weekend in June every year at KRDG.  The always have P-40's.  This year they had three as well as P-51's, B-17's, a Liberator, and a bunch of others.  It is like a mini OSH, in that it has some odd stuff as well.
