Title: It's a "contribution", not a tax
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on July 17, 2019, 10:04:36 AM
A few months ago, Massachusetts passed a Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (175M).

Employers and covered employees aren't taxed to fund the family leave and medical leave trust fund.  They are, however, required to pay a "contribution" to the fund.

begin quote
“Contributions”, the payments made by an employer, a covered business entity, an employee or a self-employed individual to the Family and Employment Security Trust Fund, as required by this chapter.
end quote

<sigh>

Although I were a engineer, I think I can still have a valid opinion wrt the twisting/warping of the English langauge.

Fees, surcharges, assessments, and now Contributions?  What other names can they come up with as a euphemism for TAX?  The definition of contribution is typically VOLUNTARY, so a mandatory contribution is really an oxymoron or damn close.

But in all fairness, it's a states right issue and falls in line with the Constitution.

Any state that wants to tax (or whatever word they use) for whatever new scheme that state dreams up, and is voted on by the state legislature and signed into law by the governor of that state, then so be it.

People have the option of saying "no thanks" and going elsewhere, especially to a state that doesn't use such tactics.

People are fleeing the high tax liberal hellhole states in droves right now, even NY is feeling the heat from the decline.

Everything the dims touch turns to shit eventually.  This is just more proof.

Isn't FICA considered a contribution?

Yes, I believe so, but that is because, in theory at least, you will get it back with "interest".  Right.  :(

Try not making the contribution..... the penalties will keep you from not making it again.

I did not make a payroll payment correctly.  I self reported the error to the IRS (I had made all other payments correctly).  The penalty for not paying $2300ish dollars was $1200ish dollars.

Nice one. I always get a warm and fuzzy from “fair share.”

That is the term Democrats use all the time for "tax"
