Merry fairytale day! While I do believe there may be a higher power out there, I sure as hell don't believe in the make believe stories told by religion.

Happy Hanukkah.  Merry Christmas.

Regrettably it is harram for Muslims to wish us happiness on our infidel holidays, but still my best wishes to them at the end of our year.

Well that was unnecessary.  You also sound like a militant atheist lib, which I know you’re not.

Just felt like stirring the pot a little. But I do hate the fair weather christians that only show up to church on the major holidays.

I'm still trying to figure out how the birth of the messiah correlates with a fat guy in a hokey red suite leaving gifts, and how the crucifixion is called "Good Friday" and that the resurrection has something to do with a giant rabbit leaving eggs hidden everywhere.

Doesn't really matter because it is all make believe ;D

Christianity, and especially Roman Catholics (sorry, Stan) have a long history of adopting beliefs, date, etc. from pagans and other religions to legitimize their belief system. I don't think it matters one way or another whether Santa or the bunny relate to religion, but since they help bring religion to the attention of the people of the world, it's all good. And some origin stories of Santa are based on a Bishop bringing presents to others.

Bishops wore red suits with white fur accents, and had sleighs pulled by flying reindeer?

 Damn!, I'm so confused!

With all joking and poking aside,  it's great to live in a country with religious freedom.

And it's great to hear our President say "Merry Christmas".

Hell yeah they did. About as believable as someone never banging their wife and then her getting knocked up by some mythical being.

Santa Claus is in actuality St. Nicolas, who did indeed bring presents to children on Christmas, or at least that's how the legend goes.  His modern incarnation was created by the artist Haddon Sundblom at the behest of the Coca Cola company.  While prior incarnations id in deed incorporate a red coat, Sundblom's was the first with the portly beard man, suit and the rest.

How do you know it's mythical?  I could just as easily be real as mythical, and I am not at all religious by the way.

How do you know it's mythical?
Now really; what kind of a question is that when we are talking about Gods and ghosts and things?
If you believe it, it is real.  If you don't, it is mythical.  There is no proof that would hold up in court either way.

So NOBODY knows, although some people think they do.

When I made the post that started this thread I knew the belief itself was real, even though I am an atheist. If I thought that the belief was that detrimental to my own interests I would not have wished anyone a Merry Christmas. But there are many fine people among my family and friends who believe in God and no reason for me to treat them with disdain or argue about their beliefs.

Since belief systems seem often driven by emotional reactions, I think it important to leave a good impression of atheists. Too often atheists come across as jerks. If someone wishes me a Merry Christmas my response is to reply in kind. Only if circumstances permit further discussion would I mention that I am an atheist. (Several years ago at the end of a late December conference call with some computer programmers in Bangalore they wished me a Merry Christmas, so I responded in kind. I knew they were Hindu and probably assumed I was Christian, but it wasn’t an appropriate time to mention their mistake. It was the thought that counted.)

I considered not initiating the post at all, and who would notice such a lack? But I thought some might appreciate a sincere Merry Christmas even among those who know I am an atheist. I acknowledge your belief is real and presumably helps guide your life, even if I don’t have such a belief.

Anyone that says he/she really KNOWS is fooling themselves.  As you say.  NOBODY KNOWS.  So believe what you want.  We may get the answers when we die, and we may not.  In the meantime tear it up.

Christmas Eve I told my 2 1/2 year old that if he didn't go to bed, Santa would give his presents to other kids. He took off so fast to bed. If the thought of Santa can get him to go to bed, which is a small battle in my house, that jolly fat guy is real IMHO.

My parents would try to get me to eat by telling me that there were children starving in China.  I said, "then send it to them".

I’ve struggled all my life with the concept of the birth lottery. Why me, so blessed and fortunate, and so many others not?

It was your destiny as an American.  It is also the reason we could expand the country to the West Coast.  Now, I'd like to give it back to the Spanish.  They can deal with the homeless problem, illegal aliens, and effing Silicon Valley Commies.   :)

Thank you Jim. I have atheist friends that have the same attitude as you.

What I don’t understand is why some atheists or agnostics feel the need to proselytize their lack of faith, or ridicule those who do hold faith.

Well it is akin to speaking with the Spanish Inquisition, only a lot WORSE.  Godless is an understatement.  They are MEATLESS!  :)
