In today's paper I saw a Tribune News Service article about a new perk some companies are offering: paid time off when adopting a pet, albeit a one-time perk.
I love pets, especially dogs, but words fail me...

Just another sign of a roaring economy and record low unemployment. There are more jobs than people to fill them. Companies are having to get creative in attracting new employees, and retaining existing ones.

Exactly. I might have done the same thing, of course though, I owned a veterinary hospital.
Employers are always looking for cheap, non-taxable perks to raise morale. I think this is a good idea.
Also, if I worked for such a company, that would be the perfect way to schedule time off for an interview with another company. ;)

We give a half day every other week off for salaried employees. Only on non clinic days, so no loss in productivity. We started it 9 years ago. Keeps the staff happy.

Employer provided health insurance was began as a way to entice and keep employees after WW2 due to the same thing we are experiencing now.

Yes but that was because the feds froze wages so companies used health insurance instead to make up the compensation needed to attract the employee. When you screw with natural market prices based on supply/demand, bad things happen. That led to the horrible situation today where your insurance is tied to your job. This is a widespread disaster. You lose your job, your entire family loses insurance. You cannot buy it individually, it’s unaffordable. Now you have the left crying for government run healthcare as the solution when it was government that created the mess in the first place.

Correct. I hadn't remembered the exact details in play, except for it was used as an incentive.
So maybe the government will create a dept of animal adoption now? ???

Good inexpensive perk for employees and good for animals as long as it's adopting from a rescue or shelter. Not buying from a puppy mill.

I happen to agree with you, but I don’t t like the idea of forcing my values on others.

Maybe, but job reqs are still specifying unicorns, and I haven't noticed any uptick in compensation.

Ah, I didn't think of it that way. Like you can have time off to adopt a baby from Africa (for example) but not any where else. That makes sense. Thanks!

I'm seeing a strong uptick in retail, service industry, trade jobs and other sectors.
In those areas pay has come up. Diesel mechanics, as an example, are in high demand. Building trades jobs are in demand. Even aviation sector jobs are in demand with steadily increasing incomes.

There’s also a high level of virtue signaling with companies offering such things.
At my firm we have parental leave, which gives men paternity leave benefits. Our “wellness” programs are broken out as physical, financial, social, and emotional.
When my daughter was born I had a strong sense of responsibility to provide for my newly-grown family, so I felt I needed to get back to work ASAP. But young guys ALL take their paternity leave benefit.
