Title: More from the Peoples Republic of Cambridge
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on January 15, 2020, 05:40:32 AM
Cambridge MA city council recently banned Government use of facial recognition technology.

How wonderful for you Cambridge.

idle thought:  I guess that means government workers can't use the face id functionality on their iphones...

This is a double edge sword.  I don't like all the cameras viewing us almost from the time we leave our homes until we return.  It is pervasive and invasive, but the courts have ruled that once you leave your home you have no right to privacy.

The cameras on the street, both public and private do help law enforcement catch criminals which is a good thing.  Facial recognition software can only enhance their effectiveness.  On one hand, I support it, and the other I abhor it.  This is not an easy one, because I do not like being monitored almost 24/7.

People that let Alexa, Siri, and similar devices in their homes have to be nuts.  That is voluntary surveillance in one's own home.

Man, I totally agree with you about those devices. I have strong conservative friends and clients who are distrustful of government willingly have an Alexa in their home so it can turn on music, and other bullshit stuff. Wild. Smh.

China is using face recognition technology for their social credit program. It terrifies me. You will never convince me that sort of thing cannot happen in the U.S.

Especially in light of the recent case where a judge ordered Google to turn over EVERYTHING they have on Jusse Smollett.  I have no sympathy for Smollett, but that is incredibly intrusive.  But then again, people give up that information willingly every day.

Agree, but people don’t willingly broadcast their every internet search and this is what’s being collected and turned over, and not just criminal suspects but innocent parties, and it’s being released to the public. In the Chris Watts case, the internet searches of his mistress (who, while a skank, is innocent of any crime) have been released to the public and are being discussed all over social media. She did internet searches for wedding dresses, and for how to have anal sex, among other things.

Digitally tracking and saving such information on all of us, along with our physical locations every second of every day, is beyond 1984 terrifying.

Social credit is already here.  Go google your name or someone else and you'll see a mylife.com pop up, and there you can see their "reputation score".

I had no idea I was an Indian American Hindu!
Y’all can call me Mahatmawatha.

Let’s see:
https://www.mylife.com/james-logajan/e487341944292 (https://www.mylife.com/james-logajan/e487341944292)

“James may have Arrest or Criminal Records.”
You’ll never get me alive coppers!

“James may have Lawsuits, Liens or Bankruptcies.”
Anyone spare a dime?

“James may have Sexual Offenses.”
She said she was over 18!

“James may have records indicating that he has been evicted from his home.”
Is that bench taken?

All joking aside, this is in it's infancy.    The database will grow as more data mining continues.   It's only a matter of time until a reputation score evolves.

For those that haven't noticed, the credit score outfits are now offering a "boost" to peoples credit scores.   And how to get that boost?  Simple, go to their site and answer a bunch of data questions and they'll throw you a bone and give you a few points.   Data mining for the ignorant, much like social media.

Speaking of data mining, has anyone here done the 24&me where you send your dna sample in for a reading?  Not only do you pay them, but now they are building one helluva dna database that is potentially worth billions.

I did the 23&me with full knowledge what I was giving them but I wanted the information myself.  I have discovered that they can identify you through your relatives’ dna so I don’t think it matters, even if you don’t give them your own sample. And nobody even needs to give a sample to 23&me. The BTK killer was identified through a dna sample of his daughter obtained from her Pap smear from a hospital without her knowledge or consent.

That horrified me. Naturally I’m glad they caught the BTK killer but the ramifications here are terrifying. You get a biopsy, and the law goes after it to get your full dna profile. The ONLY thing shielding us from that being used against every one of us right now is the 4th Amendment. I guess in theory HIPPA too but HIPPA is a frickin joke. It’s got more holes in it than Swiss cheese. However it does make it impossible for me to get the balance on my husband’s doctor bill so I can pay it.

I don’t regret doing 23&me because I like all the health information and the Neanderthal heritage. Also I have a half brother I didn’t know existed until I was 30 years old. When I met him I knew it was true, he is the spitting image of my father’s brother, but 23&me confirmed it. That was fun.

If we lose the Constitution there is nothing stopping the government from mandating everyone give their dna to a database the day we are born. Law enforcement would love that. In fact they may do that anyway, claiming you still need a warrant to access it, they are already doing that with phone records and the FISA court.

The Constitution is violated every day by Courts, law enforcement and our Government.  Don't rely on the Constitution.  It is going to take "The People" to enforce the Constitution because Government has gotten away from it for so long that it is SOP and a way of life for them.

Sad to say, not sure there is anything stopping them now, Constitution be damned. Look what they have done via the FISC.

You got that right!  My wife has a number of health issues and I handle all the contacts with her doctors and insurance.  The hoops I have to jump through to get things done are amazing.  Yes, I'll go wake her up so she can tell you it's OK for me to talk to you.  I tried talking in a high-pitched voice but it didn't work.  Like they would know it's her anyway.  Yes, I appreciate the security.  But please make it so I can get stuff done.

You could just get her to go ahead and give you general durable power of attorney but that doesn’t seem to make it any better.  I’ve got PoA for my mother but the hoops I have to jump through to exercise it is insane. I have to repeatedly send copies of the PoA document to companies who keep losing it, and now some of them are starting to require a notarized affidavit that my mother has not rescinded the PoA in the interim between its effective date and the present, every time I take an action on her behalf! That is freaking crazy, because you can never prove that it wasn’t rescinded in the last five minutes... and the next five minutes, and so on.

Wo!  We carry scanned copies of each other's PoAs just in case.  Always seem to need them just before something major.  Each time we visit a different doctor we fill out the "yes, he can discuss medical issues with you" and get extra copies for when they lose theirs.  Worse is when they know me, know that I have authorization, but the form is over a year old and no longer valid.

I'm a major proponent of security, and I do appreciate that they don't give information to just anyone.  But when working all day to get Doctors A, B, and C working together it's a pain.

Best of luck for a swift resolution to your hassles!
