But the Democrats told us foreign policy is set and decided by unelected bureaucrats. That’s not true??? :o

Godfather.
Thanks. Never saw the movie. Mario Puzo, the author of the book, saw no difference between the gangsters he wrote about and capitalists or businesspeople.

Capitalists and businesspeople murder people in cold blood as a matter of course? Interesting perspective.

Interesting take. I wonder if he saw any similarity to Marxists and Communists?
Probably not, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot were all such nice gentle people.

You sort of sounded like steingar when you posted that.
You would like the movie. Marlon Brandon was amazing. The sets and music were outstanding and the supporting cast read like a who’s who of all time Hollywood.

It was one of the few movies that I read the book first and then thought the movie did a good job of it. Normally movies based on novels suck compared to the novel.

After a bit of research, turns out my recollection is wrong. I could not find a source supporting my assertion with regard to Puzo. It seems it was film maker Coppola who considered Godfather a metaphor for capitalism. Here’s a quote from a letter he wrote to Brando persuading him to be in a second Godfather movie:
“All I’m saying is that if you will be in this movie; I will do my very best to make it be good; and human, and express the notion that the Mafia is only a metaphor for America and capitalism, which will do anything to protect and perpetuate itself. (I will do this anyway, if you’re not in the film…but if you were in it, it would be better, and you would help me with your ideas as I work on the script.)”

Though I did find this interesting positive take on the Godfather on a conservative web site that saw the film in a different light:

Oh I See. He obviously donated all his earnings and profits from the movie to the collective.

Yes, and all the Hollywood elite live a life on poverty in a commune similar to a monastery, but even poorer.
The Mafia IS like capitalism, but with a different set of rules. Ethics, morals, and non-violence are often thrown out the window, but they did have a sort of code in which they abided. Civilians typically were off limits and didn't get hurt for instance.

An understandable misremembering. Wow, that sounds awful, but the second link makes clear it’s cartel capitalism he seemed to have a problem with and that he didn’t necessarily think communism was the solution.
It’s true that greedy self interest drives both organized crime and capitalism in the sense of Ayn Rand: the “greed” of the profit motive is the engine of a free market. But cartels introduce a level of unfairness. And it’s true that capitalism will do anything to protect and perpetuate itself, but it’s policed by law, made by democratically elected leaders, within a legally recognized geopolitical arena, whereas the mafia is outside all of this, making up its own rules, and choosing not to participate in society’s generally accepted morality.
My take on it was the mafia family was an amusing parody of normal people. If it was a metaphor for capitalism, it was very tongue in cheek, like the film was laughing at you for pretending to accept these mobsters as ordinary business people, much like the Travolta-Jackson duo in Pulp Fiction.
