Title: 2020 Census
Post by: jb1842 on April 21, 2020, 10:38:29 AM
Just completed mine. I answered 1 question and only 1 question. How many people live at my address on April 1. Anybody else fill out theirs yet?

You’re better off not replying to the census at all than answering one or some of the questions.
That said, prosecutions for refusals or partial replies appear to occur maybe once every few decades.

There hasn't been a prosecution since 1970. Even the census website said they won't prosecute if you don't answer.

Why is that?

Results of the census are used to set the number of Representatives a state gets.

Why is that?

It was once the case that the penalty for not answering some questions was greater than not returning a census.  But mostly it is because it is difficult for the census bureau to detect and then determine why there was no response.

I responded online, wrote "American" for place of origin.

That’s right there were detailed questions about ethnicity, not just white, black, Hispanic or Asian, but what specific country were your ancestors from?  I think I said, “none of your business.”  What the hell do they need that for?

For the record I have DNA from nearly every Northern European country, and I was supposed to list “English, French, Scottish, Irish, Danish, Spanish, Hungarian, Polish, Estonian, Turkish, Italian, Swedish and a sizable chunk of Neanderthal.”  What the fuck? None of your goddamn business, I’m an American citizen, period end of story, there should be no reason to tally race other than for discriminatory purposes.

Besides, go back far enough my ancestors were African just like everybody else. How about one race: human. I thought in this enlightened age we were supposed to be past all that and all one happy family.

For the last two censuses (but not this one, thankfully) we got the "long form" questionaire.  It asked all sorts of intrusive questions such as how many toilets you had, and how much credit card debt you carried.  We never answered those questions, only giving the names and ages of the people living here.

Both times they eventually sent nice ladies to our house to get the missing answers, and both times we told them to pound sand (politely, since they really were nice ladies).  We were told that the information was confidential.  We were told that they needed it to figure out where to send federal money.  We were told that we were required by law to answer.  We always refused and nothing ever came of it.

This time I also answered "American" when they asked who the hell I think I am.

There’s an interim census that’s unbelievably invasive, including gun ownership, how far you drive to work, the thing about how many toilets, etc. We got that, too, and I just threw them all away. Nothing ever happened.

I suspect liberals are way more likely to give over personal information to their revered Fedgov than conservatives are. This brings up the interesting question of whether the data collected will be skewed. I prefer to think Big Bro will just know more about liberals than about me, and I’m fine with that.

Wow--Is the gun ownership stuff new?  I don't recall ever seeing that sort of question on past censuses (but then there's a lot I don't recall).  That would have sent me right over the edge.  Like many gun owners, I'm very suspicious of a government that wants to know about my guns.

Tim

Edit:  Oooh--"full member" now.  I could have told them that a long time ago. <rimshot>

It’s not the every-decade census, but it arrives looking very official and it is HUGE. I think they just threw everything in there that they wanted to know and hoped people would be sheep and answer.

Gun ownership is turning up more and more ... and the coronavirus situation is bringing it to the fore. An elderly friend got an offer from Medicare (yes, the federal agency) for a $150 rebate if she returned a questionnaire. She proceeded, but tossed it out when she came to “Are you a registered gun owner?”

I would NEVER share my DNA with Ancestry.com or 23 And Me, but I have a number of friends who have. Virtually all of them (who mostly have ancestry from northern, eastern and Southern Europe) have DNA from Northern Africa.

That shows the idiocy and narrow view of swamp people who write these questions. In most of the US you are never a “registered gun owner.”

Very true.  In my state it is ILLEGAL to have a gun registry, yet the PA State Police have one, but get away with it because they call it an "Incomplete List" because it does not capture the few private sales that happen for long guns (rifles and shotguns).  ALL handguns must go through an FFL with a Federal Form 4473 which THEY get a copy of.  So in effect they have a registry of all handguns and the vast majority of rifles and shotguns.

Criminals can do whatever they want as they do NOT follow gun laws, nor any other ones.

I thought long and hard before I did it but concluded that the government is going to get my DNA anyway if it wants to, and I’ve been proven correct, there are cases of govt getting your DNA from medical pathology samples, a cup you put in the trash, and so on. I know, they needed a warrant, but that’s pretty meaningless because they get warrants for innocent people that aren’t even the suspect, such as your relatives. And for that matter, they can guess your DNA from those of your relatives who do submit it to those registries.

So I figured if the govt could get my DNA any time it wants, but I would not benefit from the data, I might as well go ahead and get access to all the data myself. Besides it finally proved that the guy that showed up when I was 30 claiming to be my long lost brother was indeed my brother. Kidding, we all knew he was because he so obviously looked like our family, but it was cool getting confirmation.

But I totally understand people who choose not to, I could easily have gone the other way myself.

My DNA indicated I am 1/1023rd Indian (American Indian not Quickie Mart Indian).  So I am 1/1000th more Indian than Elizabeth Warren.   Please now refer to me as Chief Fulla Bull.
