Title: I just got back from my doctor....
Post by: Rush on April 23, 2020, 11:53:01 AM
I’m having some cervical radiculopathy and called up my doctor’s office to see if they’d call me in a prednisone dose pack but they said they’d have to see me so, here’s the procedure:

1. Drive there and stay in your car
2. Call them on your phone and answer a bunch of questions about whether you have covid19 symptoms
3. Pay over the phone with a credit card
4. Wait for a nurse to call you back and ask questions about what you did come here for
5. If the nurse thinks you should come in, she says go to the back entrance
6. You go to the furtive entrance where a nurse in a mask and gloves takes your temperature
7. You are invited in and led to a room where eventually the doctor, also wearing a mask, comes in

That nurse and doctor were the only people I saw anywhere. No other cars, no other employees. I asked the doctor how he was doing with this shut down. He said they are doing 20% of normal business and he has kept all his employees on payroll whether they come in or not but he will run out of money the end of May, and if this shutdown lasts that long he will have to lay them off.

He has been reading the latest studies coming from epidemiologists that are now saying the covid19 might have been in the U.S. as long as a year and that they may find that up to 80% of people are infected. The true hospitalization rate is turning out to be 4%, not 20% as we were first told, and the true death rate .05%. He believes there will be widespread antibody testing and results made known in about 4 weeks.

He said the hospitals here and in the next county both emptied themselves expecting “a tsunami” of covid19 patients and have had virtually nothing, no tsunami. Just a couple of cases bad enough to require hospitalization. Next week they are going to reopen for elective surgeries.

He said we did the right thing to shut down because it was based on the data we had at that point in time. But now we are getting tons of data in that is showing this is not any worse than flu, but the data comes in in overwhelming amounts and takes time to process, so it will take a while to filter into public awareness. I said, what about people using the shutdown for political agenda? He said, “In all disasters the politicians do that, the Titanic is sinking and they are arguing over the arrangement of the deck furniture.”

In the car on the way home the news said now 1 out of 6 Americans are out of work.

Today, Gov Baker (Taxachusetts) had his (almost) daily press briefing.

The theme today was hospitals and medical facilities are open for business, if you are sick, seek medical treatment from the doctor, etc.  There are plenty of beds available to handle the expected surge and treat patients for non-COVID-19 illnesses.

I think the gov over did the COVID-19 panic [duh!] and now the hospitals are paying the price.

All of us are paying the price, and we've yet to hit bottom.

I think there was a certain amount of logic behind the initial economic shutdown.  There was a real chance that the hospitals would be overwhelmed.  For several reasons.  For example:

- The CDC fucked up many of the test kits through contamination.  Without that information, we were operating kind of blind.

- China Lied about the scope of the problem while cornering the market on PPE.  Many/most hospitals discontinued "elective" surgery to save PPE.

- Then, many of the stockpiles of PPE the FEDGOV had were dry-rotted and unusable with an expiration date in 2010. (Who was Pres then?)

Of course there was over-reaction.  What else could a politician do?  They had to err on the side of saving lives since the number of lives at stake was unknown.

But now there is a different story.  Supplies of PPE are catching up.  So is the availability of ventilators, although I have a rather controversial thought about that.  I heard today that virtually everyone that went on ventilators for Covid died anyway.  Maybe we should just skip the ventilator step and save that time and money, unless you are the King of England (or Prime Minister) or an NBA star.  We also have a better idea of the total fatality rates of the disease, and it is not really that scary.  Yes, of course any death is scary but we are dealing in macro numbers here and everybody is going to die anyway.  Eventually.

Also, the economic impact of the shutdown is becoming intolerable.  The several emergency budget acts by FEDGOV, in the TRILLIONS has to be paid somehow, someway by somebody.  I for one LIKED living in a first world country.  Even though I don't have any kids, it is a shame to take that away from future generations.

Gotta stop rambling here.  It's happy hour after all.

To add to this Joe, I think the big, tough politicians who fist-pounded and demanded shutdowns of virtually everything are now so utterly cowardly that they cannot summon the courage to open up society and stop the economic bleeding. So they are continuing the shutdowns out of “an abundance of caution” which we know means lack of any semblance of testicles.

To go along with Rush's story. Yesterday I had a follow up with my PCP for a shoulder issue I've been doing PT for.  My appointment was for 8:30 with an arrival time of 8:15.  I arrived, parked and walked to the front door. Nothing happened and there was a gentleman standing there. He been there since 7:45 to get some blood work done. He pointed out the note on the door that instructs you to call a phone number. He had his phone in his hand and dialed the number, for the fifth time. For the fifth time he got voice mail and left a message. A couple of minutes later a lady in scrubs came around the corner of the building and ask for Mr. XXX. He said that was him. She asked him to get in his car and drive around the side of the building. Meanwhile, my phone is in the car. I walk back to the car and get my phone and walked back to the door and dialed the number. Someone actually answered. I told her who I was and what I was there for. She told me to go back to my car, drive around the side of the building and wait in my car for the nurse to come get me. After several minutes the nurse came out and took my temperature and then invited me to follow her. We entered the building and went straight to a room. The rest of the visit was fairly normal. Doctor talked to me and the nurse took me and did some x-rays of my shoulder, no x-ray technician, just the nurse. Went back and reviewed the x-rays with the doctor and then the nurse came back, made my appointment for my annual checkup and walked my back to the door.

Once I arrived back home I went to the website to let them know they should have communicated with me via text or email to tell me the process that was in place, where to park and the phone number to call. It would have saved me the back and forth at the front door and made things much smoother.  They have responded and taken my suggestions. Not sure if they'll get implemented.

I have been to the PT clinic twice a week for five weeks. It has been interesting to watch the changes as they adapted. The usual process was to go in and sign in, then pay by giving them your card, they swipe and give you a paper to sign. That soon went away and they would sign you in, you swiped the card yourself and signed nothing. You then were required to go wash your hands before you started. They would disinfect everything after someone used it, wiped down the tables, etc. They washed their hands a lot. No one wore gloves but they did wear masks. We were not required to wear masks. All in all they did a great keeping us safe. My last visit was yesterday. I gave the three of them $50 gift cards for the efforts.

Interestingly, Monday, I went to a blood-draw facility for blood tests.  The only thing different was everyone was wearing masks.  I was the only patient there (I wore a mask just to make them feel comfortable).  I walked in, gave my name, and had my blood samples taken.

(this was in Taxachusetts)

This is exactly what the NC governor did today. Extended the shutdown to May 8. My sister called me fuming. I wish I were in NC, I so would attend those protests.

Think it through...  I'm not going to mess with someone who is going to stick a needle in my arm.

However, I should say that the med tech would probably be ok with it.  She is an easy-going person.

Good luck actually seeing a doctor these days. I had two "appointments" this week. The first was a phone call only. For the second I actually went to the clinic - but the "meeting' with the
doctor was by way of video on an iPad. It only half worked (doctor could see me but I couldn't see him). I did see him (but with no audio) when he set up the call - but that ended when he
switched to two-way mode. I wonder if it is worth the trouble.

Wow. Well if it makes you feel better maybe whatever he charged you will help him keep his staff employed.  Mine said he was only seeing “essential” cases. (I said, glad my neck pain is essential); his office was refusing to do my husband’s yearly well check. But he said next week they are opening for checkups because the phlebotomists will be back and the labs will be open again.

Notice how these Democrat Governors just keep stringing there constituents along. Two weeks, and then in two weeks it will be extended for two more weeks, all part of the plan.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
This couldn't fit better into their plans. They've crashed the economy and are giving everyone on unemployment a minimum wage of $15 per hour.  Next they will target the election and never look back. Never again will a Republican President be allowed. Fundamental change will be achieved.
