I watched that press conference 5 or 6 times. He gave absolutely no indication in there that he wasn't being serious.
It wasn't until the next day that Trump said that it was sarcasm that people started saying "he wasn't serious". Until then people who came to Trump's defense insisted that he didn't say that.

Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds — it sounds interesting to me.
"Something like that" to me means "something like that but different". If he meant injecting bleach he would have said "can we do that", not "something like that". He looked at a doctor when he said that which tells me he wants the doctor to come up with "something like that".
But of course, no matter what he said, those with extreme TDS are going to look for the worst in what he says, even if it means lying and leaving lout words, like ILLEGAL aliens, or MAN MADE climate change, or the FAKE media is the enemy of the people.

Let's just do a little thought experiment for a minute. There are a lot of medications that are inhaled. Would it be impossible to imagine that an anti-viral agent (a disinfectant, if you will) could be created that is an aerosol that can be inhaled directly into the lungs and which would kill the virus? Is that impossible? Is it something that should be investigated? Might it become useful to do so someday? Do we have something like that already? Essentially that's what the president was saying. Yes, his words were inconvenient that he said "injected", but in context what he said is perfectly reasonable.

I hope the decisions are NOT left to medical experts. Their understanding of economics and constitutional limits appears to be limited once outside their realm of expertise. Trump need to be weighing the medical recommendations against whatever his economic experts are saying.

I did say 50 for a reason and not 100 :). Even at the "low" New York infection fatality rate, this still has the potential to kill 25 to 50 million people worldwide if left unchecked. Based on that I would rate it the top issue of the last 50 years.

If you take things in their proper context, you need to watch Bill Bryan. He is the Science and Technology Director for Homeland Security. Below is the video for the entire press conference. Skip ahead to minute 19 of the video when he speaks and watch the entire 7-8 minutes in its context.
What you will hear about are the various tests that they are conducting regarding the coronavirus. Sunlight and UV light have the best direct effect on the virus.
You will also hear – FROM HIM – that they are testing disinfectants that are readily available, which included bleach and isopropyl alcohol.
Trump comes to the podium afterwards and is commenting on what Mr. Bryan had presented, in which he mentioned disinfectants – which is what everyone is talking about. There's also a short section around the 49 minute mark when a reporter asked him about it.

I had some lefty acquaintances use an MSNBC clip and were utterly outraged by the comment which through creative editing implied he was recommending people inject disinfectants. That was a 30-something second clip.
A fuller clip of 48-55 seconds showed how it was a question, that you should talk to your doctor, etc. (the same verbiage from the transcript) which totally debunks the narrative.
