I've listened to the tapes. I think he just heard the controller wrong. Honest mistake, and you need to take those runway incursions seriously, but from all that I hear he is a good pilot.

I dunno... So far he's crashed a helicopter and a PT-22. He landed on a taxiway that had an airliner sitting on it. And now a runway incursion. I certainly am not the world's best pilot so I can't throw stones, but he seems to have an awful lot of bad luck.

Edit: I have to admit, Ford has impressive credentials for a private pilot: single engine land, multi engine land, single engine sea, helicopter, instrument airplane, well over 5000 total time.

I heard the tapes too. The controller apparently was the one that was not listening as Ford’s read back said what he was going to do. That’s the point of a read back. How many times have you read back a clearance and been corrected by the controller? Plenty of times for me.
The controller was a dick.

You're right. And that's exactly what the read back is for. Yes, I've been corrected as well. Controllers are human to though and they do make mistakes.

No doubt, but the person who turns into an asshole because of it is the one that needs to settle the fuck down. If Ford made a smart ass remark, I’d criticize him as well.
