Title: USAF must be hard up for maintainers
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on June 02, 2020, 08:00:28 AM
Yesterday I received a mailing from the USAF saying I could earn up to a $2,000 enlistment bonus.

"Start building your career"
"Become an Air Force Maintainer"

Do you think my being 61 years old would be a drawback?

aw nuts... to qualify for the enlistment bonus I must be between 18 and 39 years of age.

missed it by that much...so close.

This must be the 61 year old club.  I am, and I think Stan is as well.  The USAF wouldn't want us.  We'd make their kids look bad.  Too productive.

Ha, you old farts. I’m only 60. And yes, we would be too productive. We’d also be the only ones able to fly steam gauges.

Hey you kids!  I'm 63 and I remember walking uphill five miles through waist deep snow to get to an aircraft with steam gauges.  And we liked it.  No magenta line for us.  No sir.  Flew by the seat of our pants we did.  We knew the airport was over thatway and most of the time it was.  Those were the days!  Now get off my lawn!

I often wonder with the pilot shortage inside the military, why they don't reach out to pilots in the the civilian community to work as civilian pilots.  Granted, not many of us are under 40, but we could be trained to fly boring old cargo planes, right?  Do we really need to be 20 years old with our hair on fire for that?

A lot of the gas-passers and trash-haulers are flown by reserve and guard pilots... not to mention the provision to grab airliners (and crew) for troop transport.

Yeah, well I’m 64.5 and in my day we had no instruments and no airports - just steam powered airships, like this:

Well....

When I flew in the service we used to have to hand prop the engines, run around the wing while the plane inched forward nd jump into the cockpit, all before the propeller wound up enough to cause the plane to run away from us...

And

By the way.... What are steam gauges?>>

Are those the thingys the young guys talk about that help you fly the plane?

No shortage of pilots so much as a shortage of the senior staff O5-6s. They have a near infinite supply of O-1-2s with Shiny Jet syndrome to fly.

I'm 41, but still too old and broken to climb on jets and try to squeeze into tight spaces.
