Title: The 82nd airborne flew over our house
Post by: bflynn on June 02, 2020, 10:16:40 AM
Deploying to defend the Capitol building in downtown Raleigh.

Seems symbolic.

Reminds me, I need to go get a carry holster for my sprinfield.

Springfield what?  1911 or XD?

Springfield 1855, Krag, Enfield, 03A1, 03A3, M1 Garand, M14, M16, XD, XDs, XDm, 1911?

I own a few and wish I owed one of each.

XDS.

The 1911 is a Colt for sentimental reasons.  I like to remember freezing my nutz off standing watch.  Larger than I want to carry.

XD-9 subcompact for me, it’s my favorite carry weapon. I sometimes carry the Kimber, but not often.

I have several 1911s but I carry a concealed hammer .357 snub with .38 +p ammo. I shot competition with the 1911s but they’re a bit big for me to carry these days.

My main carry is a CZ-75D PCR, 9mm but sometimes a Polish P-83 in 9x18 (9mm Makarov).   I love the Combloc stuff.  I admit to carrying a WWII Mauser Luger P-08 now and again.  It works every time with all ammo.  Even hollow points and my reloads.

Shooting performance is the main reason I carry the XD9. I'm on target 1st shot with the Kimber .45, but muzzle flip with the .45 and 3" barrel is hard for me to control. Followon shots are ragged. On the target, but not on center enough. Contrast that with the 9mm, not only is the 1st shot on target, but followon shots are very closely grouped with the 1st. Enough so that one time when my wife came to the range to watch me shoot, after I was done shooting both she commented "I'd sure hate to be the bad guy on the day you're carrying the 9mm."

Yeah I’m much better with my 9mm than my .45s and of course the short barrel revolver would be best at close range but for everyday carry purposes it’s my reliable, convenient, go to firearm. I never shot competition with it, which actually defeats the purpose as simulating civilian self defense situations; I should shoot matches with what I would normally have on me. I did of course train with it though. We had such a fantastic instructor. I really miss him. :'(

What brand .357?  My daughter is looking for recommendations. The only revolver I owned was a Ruger SP-101. I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with it.

Colt is back in the revolver business, but they’re not giving them away.

I carry a Glock 27 or a Sig 226.

Ruger LCR is a nice little revolver. Very stout recoil, though. 357 is a good choice because it can take other calibers.

Last month I picked up a Springfield 911in 9mm. Pocket sized and can hold 7 rounds. Hope to shoot it for the first time this weekend.

I have two, a Ruger LCR and a Taurus 605. The Ruger is lighter and has a shorter barrel length so the Taurus is a bit more comfortable to shoot and more accurate in theory but with snubs you aren’t going to expect a lot of accuracy at long range anyway. The Ruger is more comfortable to carry and shooting “comfort” is relative anyway with these things. So I don’t recommend one over the other, she should try several and see what works for her.

FWIW, the one shooting I was involved in, I didn't feel the recoil at all. Just find out what fits your hands the best, and put a lot of rounds through it.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, but from everything I've read and heard about from others that you'd don't hear the blast, or feel the recoil as you are in hyper drive at that moment.  Scary thought.  However, better than being dead or your family being dead.

On revolvers.  I think they have their place, and the compact ones are good carry guns.  As stated above, I prefer semi-autos for just about everything these days, and am down to one, a Single Action revolver, USFA SAA 4 5/8 in barrel in .45 Colt.  I reload so it's not that expensive to shoot.  Prices for those cartridges are through the roof.

Tunnel vision is a real thing. My situation I was with 2 unarmed intel analysts at a home, we got rushed by 4 pit bulls coming from around the corner of a house. From holster to 8 shots, it was probably less than 3 seconds. And aiming at 4 targets coming in fast. Got the biggest 1, and the others scattered fast. Felt bad for the dogs, not there fault their owners are trash and trained them to be violent.

Did the unarmed intel analysts buy you a steak dinner and numerous cocktails that night?

No. Because of location and what we were doing, it was best to act like they weren't involved. Which is a whole different issue.
