Let’s be honest.

Liberals are stupid, lazy, parasitic, whiners, who think they are entitled to be given everything they can think to want because mommy said they were special.

Hardly a new complaint - read this article from 2017: https://www.nationalreview.com/2017/09/star-spangled-banner-racist-anthem/ (https://www.nationalreview.com/2017/09/star-spangled-banner-racist-anthem/)

At the time of this post there are just under 1700 signatures to the change.org petition. But it would accomplish nothing regardless of how many people signed.

The current complaint is about the third stanza that denigrates some who fought with the British during the war of 1812. But nobody sings past the first stanza anymore and subsequent stanzas were likely overlooked by proponents when the song was officially made the national anthem in 1931. The statute doesn’t designate any particular version of the song as official (statute is here: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/36/301 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/36/301))

While I’ve never been a fan of the tune, the first stanza sentiment is just fine IMHO. Never paid attention to the remaining stanzas, as I imagine most others have not either, so almost hardly a man is now alive who would revel in any taint of racism it might have ever had.

I have seen proposals to replace it with America the Beautiful (it seems that was a strong contender when Key’s song was chosen) and based on criteria having nothing to do with racism I’d consider that a reasonable replacement. But on account of racism? That’s an absurd justification IMHO.

To be honest, other than the spirit of pride and patriotism I feel when singing or listening to it, I have never particularly liked  the song.  So I wouldn't be opposed to changing something that has only been recognized as the Star Spangled Banner for less than 100 years.  If we were to change it, I sort of like "This land is your land".

For one thing, why should we have a National Anthem that nobody can sing properly and nobody knows all the words to?

America the Beautiful would be a good second choice.

America the Beautiful will be passed over because it refers to God.

"Above the fruited plane" is triggering and offensive.  No plane is fruited.  Well, maybe Cirrus.

Oh good. A song by the Communist Woody Guthrie.

Read the lyrics, like this one:

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property
But on the back side it didn’t say nothing
This land was made for you and me

Well obviously it should be replaced with music written and performed by a black artist.  A rap artist.  They are in touch with the feelings of everyone.

So let's look at the following songs:

Fuck Wit Dre Day

A Nigga Witta Gun

For All My Niggaz and Bitches

Return of da baby killa

Another Nigger In The Morgue

Now, before anyone starts screaming racism, all of those song titles are legit, and you can find them on google and youtube.

If the black community truly wants an end to racial slurs, they need to start themselves.  Glorifying this garbage in music doesn't help them at all.

I like the song.  I like how and where it was written.  I like the words, and the range that makes only certain people able to sing it.  I remember as a kid in school, we'd sing all the patriotic songs, including "Dixie" and "When Johnny comes marching home"  and this was "up North".  Everybody had fun, and we were all proud to be Americans.  Can you see that happening today?

Tangentially related. A while back my wife dragged me to see Dave Chappelle live. In almost every joke, black men were "niggahs" and black women were "bitches", and apparently this is really funny as the mostly black crowd were rolling in the isles. Me? I couldn't wait to get out of there. Never again.

Change begins from within, and I don't see it coming anytime soon.

I concur!  The Gay Pilots Association may choose to differ, however.  A Cirrus is a requirement from what I hear.

I would not have a problem changing the songs for many reasons.  I do have a problem renaming it because it might be racist.

I guess I should have thought that through a little more.

That’s alright. I remember singing that song in Catholic grade school. That verse never seemed to be one that we sang as far as I can recall.

Don't be too hard on yourself.  I like the song, for the most part.  I look at it more from an esoteric perspective.  When I see the Rocky Mountains, or the plains, and other areas of natural beauty, I think we all share them.  I do not mean we "own" it like our home, nor back yard, car, airplane, etc.

I went to Public School in a large suburb of Philly, and teachers were generally "normal" folks, and were patriotic, thought the U.S. was a great country.  Many of the male teachers were Veterans, the female teachers mostly had families and were not "Feminists" nor activist types.

I’ve always liked the Eagles, and the other day my wife and I were watching an Eagles concert on TV from a few years ago. It was outstanding.

However, one song I used to love, but now see the story, is The Last Resort off the Hotel California album. Don Henley is a huge environmental activist and he overdramatized the singing of the song by looking angry. What a twit.

If you listen more carefully you'll find that Dave sometimes refers to men as N* and women as B*, irrespective of race or social class.

OK, good for him, but this is good comedy? Not to my ears...

I don't think I've ever seen any of his performances, but I hear he is controversial now because he's not politically correct. Maybe I should check him out.

I watched the Chappelle Show when it first came on and thought it was awesome.

He makes fun of everyone.

You know, COMEDY!

He had Wayne Brady on his show and watching Wayne Brady go blue was pretty funny.  Google it.

I myself much prefer America the Beautiful since it is a wonderful expression of patriotism (written by the son fo immigrants no less!) that lacks military involvement. That said, I think the Star Spangled banner has quite a bit of historical precedence.  I don't see this going anywhere.

“Military involvement” is precisely how our country was made free, so there’s that.

The Star Spangled Banner has an extremely emotional genesis.

Why do you hate our Military?   A Military that made us and kept us free.  Oh, I get it.  Being in Academia forces you to be that way.   ::)

I don't, I just think our nation stands for much more much.  I prefer the song that talks about how great our nation is, and not the one that talks about how we won a battle few Americans could even name.

Fewer people know about that particular battle because fucking academics (like you) lack the integrity to teach it.

I prefer the song about the men that sacrificed their lives for freedom over the song about the rest of us who benefited from what they did celebrating how great we have it.

We are, or at least were, the freest country on the planet.  And freedom isn’t free. I think the Star Spangled Banner, more than any other contemporary song, speaks to the desperate battle for freedom.
