Title: First flight in 3 years
Post by: jb1842 on July 03, 2020, 12:19:55 PM
Finally after injuries, life, etc., got in the way, I got my first flight in almost 3 years. Got checked out in an Archer, and did the manuevers for a flight review. Did a few Wings courses, and the CFI said he would sign off as me being current later this week. Going to try to get in to see an AME to get either Basicmed (did the AOPA course yesterday) or 3rd class in the next few weeks. Thinking basicmed, because I'm almost positive a 3rd class will get deferred by the FAA, and I don't trust them. The AME is part of a club a few miles from me, and I'm going to try to feel him out to see if they are looking for new members. Felt good to be in a cockpit again.

Feel really good. First time flying a low wing, and anything over 100hp. Landings were a bit squirrelly, but nothing too bad. Just couldn't get the flare right, and my speeds were a little off.

That’s friggin awesome Josh!  Congratulations.

Having flown high wings myself, when I transitioned to the low wing PT-26 the ground effect thing got me. Wings are lower to the runway than on a Skyhawk, and to me it was a noticeable difference.

Trained in a C-152 then rented C-152's, 150's. and 172's.  Got checked out in a Warrior and an Archer and was hooked, so eventually bought a PA28-140B which I only had maybe two years if that, then found the Tiger and never looked back.  Much prefer low wing planes because I like the visibility in the pattern and sitting on top of the wing.

Partnered in a Warrior for ten years and loved it. Got my IR in it also.

Going to check out a club at another airport about 30 miles from me sometime this week. They have a flight design, so I might just fly under sport rules for now, as long as they don'r require a medical.

A friend in my wing flies the Flight Design Aircraft in this club and really loves it.

Flight Design is a cute aircraft.  Looks inexpensive even new and looks fun to fly.  Glass panel and cheap to fly. Worth considering if I need to go light sport someday.

When I first started taking lessons, it was between them and Cub Air in Hartford. Went with Cub Air. It was just a bit of a shorter drive for me at the time. Right now I'm having a hard time finding a Dr to do Basicmed. Hell, the AME that's 5 minutes from my house won't touch them; according to the front desk the hospital insurance policy will only cover him for 3rd class and up. But this clinic and Dr do walk up DOT medicals. Go figure.

Congrats.  Life is too short to not fly airplanes.
