Title: Fires and smoke
Post by: Becky (My pronouns are Assigned/By/God) on September 12, 2020, 06:55:39 AM
We’re sitting in stagnant smoke from surrounding wildfires, and it’s going nowhere. It’s seeped into the house and our throats and eyes and noses are having trouble. It’s been here all week, and I feel a little insane just wanting to take one deep, clean breath.

Visibility well under a quarter mile. IFR conditions in otherwise clear weather!!

Anybody else in this fix, and does anyone know how to mitigate the effects of permeating smoke and soot? Cloth masks useless. I can’t imagine having a respiratory condition in this. I feel like I’m ACQUIRING a respiratory condition!!!

Jim, good thing you’re out of Oregon. It’s awful down there right now, and that’s where our smoke is coming from.

I suppose none of your local stores have air purifiers (online somewhere?)

Maybe seal up one room (bedroom?) and run the air cleaner/purifier at max speed.

It wouldn't hurt and it might (marginally) improve things.

I hope it works out for you

While it might sound like a stupid remark, if you can go flying and get high enough, can you get above it?

On other forums they are all warning us the wildfires are caused by global warming (or is it MMCC, I can’t keep track).

Maybe California, Oregon and Washington need to declare state emergencies, lock everyone down and suspend constitutional rights.,..... oh, wait.... :o

Just ordered an air purifier from Amazon, Bob. Along with a case of Amazon guilt. 🤬

My pilot says he’s not IFR current, so we can’t get above this.

Best of luck to you both. There were several reasons we left Oregon and the annual wildfires was one of them. Every summer it seemed we dealt with smoke filled valleys - the Willamette valley where we lived being one of those stagnant air traps. My understanding is that rainy winters and dry summers make a bad combo: moisture and sun to grow followed by long dry spells that “season” the plants and trees for easier ignition and burning. That appears to be the case from Washington to California, with southern California really being a desert that has been reclaimed somewhat by man.

Good luck Becky. I can’t imagine those conditions.

This is off the cuff, and I’ve never used oxygen in an aircraft, but what about ordering some ox tanks and gear from Sporty’s or a medical supply place to have a source of clean oxygen even for a few nice cleansing breaths every hour or so?

I’m not a doctor but I used to play doctor in high school.

Reminds me of the meme where Kirk asks McCoy how long the Covid pandemic will last. McCoy says “I’m a doctor, Jim, not a politician!”

Portable oxygen. Oh man.

That's horrendous Becky.  Is their a mask you can buy that is designed to filter smoke particles?

N95 should filter the particles.

Just picked up some N95s at the hardware store. Made in China was all they had. The irony.

Also, am breathing through a damp bandana periodically to get good cleaner deep breathing.

I'm so sorry you're going through that. It sounds just awful.
