Title: Commercial flights...
Post by: Rush on September 20, 2020, 05:25:58 AM
...and Covid. I’m traveling in a couple weeks and booked my flight with a reasonable layover arriving at my destination at 6 pm, only to have the airline cancel the second leg and put me on a later flight, leaving me with a six hour layover and arrival at 10 pm. No. I changed everything around thank God at no cost to me. Now I have a barely adequate layover and arrive at 2 pm.

I’m sick of this. When will things get back to normal?

Don't look for any normalcy until 2021.

I’m sick of this. When will things get back to normal?

when?

when we flatten the curve.

oh wait, that already happened.

When the positive test rate is below 5%

oh wait, that already happened.

What there is a vaccine and/or viable treatment.

Yeah, that's it.

The goalpost won't be moved again.  We promise.  Trust us.

Flu season is coming.   If someone gets sick, how do we know if it's the flu or covid?   Could be both.

Keep social distancing.   Keep masking.  Keep businesses reduced or closed.   And for god's sake, STAY HOME!!!!

If Biden is elected, January 21st, 2021. If Trump is re-elected, never.

I have a cruise Feb 2021. We booked it 2 years ago. Curious how it will be if it happens. Still debating driving or flying down if it happens.

Cruises are likely happening ... with changes. I received notification to this effect:

Be prepared to dine in your room, have shift times for being on deck, restricted to using only the restroom in your cabin, no more buffets. Limited bus tours on land. Restrictions when in port.

Fun, eh?

What cruise line? We are booked on Carnivals newest ship. If things go, we will be on it's second cruise. I don't mind having reduced capacity, and they stated that the buffet will be there but cruise staff will fill your plates for you. I also heard that some ports will only let you do an excursion that you buy from Carnival. We'll see what happens.

It was about cruising in general. I’m sure much will vary between lines.

When was the last time you considered things to be normal?
I'm thinking circa 1970-80

Or at least 2000, prior to 9/11.  Hey, 9/11 made us fear Islamic terrorists. Today, they’re not even on my radar. The greatest threat to our freedom and prosperity now is our own embedded marxists and half the voting population.

True.  I think 9/11 did provide a precipitous change in what we consider normal.

Exactly right.  The Democrat Party, the Media, Education, Tech, etc and half the population are against us and against themselves

First time flying commercial since this insanity. Required to wear masks the whole flight except when eating, because somehow we magically become not contagious while eating.

Upon boarding, each passenger was handed a plastic baggie containing one cookie, one small bottle of water and one sanitary wipe, and then they announced there will be no further food service. Furthermore if we remove our mask other than eating, we will be banned from the airline forever.

Well that was the big flight, the captain of the puddle jumper actually did the announcements himself and said he can’t wait for the mask burning party, God love him, as he talked through his cloth mask with me hoping he doesn’t wear it while trying to fly.

The FAs were so bored during the 3 hour flight that they constantly roamed up and down the aisle with their trash bag just for something to do. Since the flight was from 4 pm to 8 pm (including time zone) that was dinner time and I usually buy one of their large snacks but nooooooo, if they sell me a snack I will kill grandma.

But in anticipation of that silliness I brought one of those little kits of crackers and salmon salad. It’s like tuna fish salad and just as stinky. I think the passenger across the aisle hated me. I was no sooner done with the last bite then the FA was right there with her trash bag. It’s like I’d committed a faux pas. How dare I eat something, and fish! - at dinner time? With my mask off and everything!

I was lucky I had the thing the way TSA had examined it like it was a bomb hidden inside a small box labeled “Bumble Bee Salmon Salad Kit”. I thought they were going to confiscate it. Meanwhile the other TSA agent was manhandling my bag of “Black Rifle Coffee Murdered Out Roast” while a third agent was fondling my hair. What is it with these agents and my hair? I always get that treatment.

On the plus side I had all three seats to myself and the plane was half full at best, and that was wonderful. Getting ready to deplane at the end everyone seemed relaxed and courteous instead of the usual intense scramble for the overhead bins and claiming aisle territory. On the puddle jumper I was the only passenger in the whole front section.

RDU terminal was virtually empty but maybe that’s because it was 8 pm? I don’t usually fly that late so can’t compare what it usually is. RDU taxi kiosk was deserted. The info desk lady said their contract had been terminated and everybody was now using Uber and Lyft. Fine with me, I was only using the taxi out of habit. My Uber driver said they were putting the traditional taxis out of business. Their model is outdated, they need to evolve or die. But his Uber business is busier than ever since the shutdown because everybody is having food delivered.

So there you have it, flying commercial in 2020.

I will not be traveling commercially or going out to eat until I am immune from the 'rona.  If I need to travel I've an airplane.  No weddings, funerals or other sorts of gatherings.  Do as you like, but this virus sounds like a good one to avoid.

I totally understand your concern about your wife, I feel the same about my mother. Coming to see her was a big decision. She is 93. She has been isolated at home all this time and sliding downhill fast from loneliness, depression, and inactivity. She had not yet met her newest great grandchild who is already 9 months old. We all talked very seriously about the pros and cons of getting together. She has some indications of organ failure and the feeling is she might not last another year. Do we deny letting her meet the baby because she might get the virus and die a few months sooner? Do we deny her the pleasure of playing cards with my sister and I which was our thrice annual tradition before 2020?

I’m low risk, I stay home and don’t even know anyone yet whose got the virus. My daughter brought the two kids and we all stayed outside on the porch, and did not let mom hold the baby or touch or kiss the older child.  Mom loved it, she just watched the children and had the greatest time. That little baby laughs and smiles constantly, mom adored her. After they left, my sister and I played cards with mom the rest of the day and we all even got a bit of a buzz on hard cider. We laughed and laughed and mom had the best time she’s had since all this started.

If she comes down with the covid we will all feel horrible and guilty if we think one of us gave it to her, and we considered that too, we would have to live with ourselves. And still we decided the right thing to do was to come, that if that happens we will have to deal with it, but we simply cannot continue keeping mom away from love and family indefinitely. We can’t wait for the whole country to be vaccinated, she can’t wait that long, she possibly will be dead of old age before then.

I have an uncle who turned 94 Aug 22cd.  He has not, and will not let the scamdemic slow him down.   He has a laundry list of things wrong with him, yet he still drives and does what he wants.

He was exposed to covid19 when his children and grandchildren had it.   He never came down with it, never showed a symptom.  He sees it this way, it's his life.  At 94 he is not going to be placed away in isolation just to watch his life expire.

The actions of government has done more harm to people than this virus could have ever done.  Millions will have their lives upended, many will have their lives destroyed.   Yet we don't see anyone in the media showing us the effects of these because it simple doesn't fit the narrative.

The only time the MSM mentions the negative aspects of all the covid panic is when they want to feed the flames for more government handouts

Yep.  The Media are criminal co-conspirators in this violation of rights, liberties and freedoms with the Democrats.   Criminal, tyrannical and the stuff of revolutions.  The Media needs to be held accountable.  The reckoning is coming I hope.

The damage is incalculable.  I’ve known one family to get the virus. All came out fine with mild cold/flu symptoms. I know a half dozen people suffering from depression from what it has done to their lives.

I’m leaving it up to my quite smart and savvy mom, who just turned 93. Thank God she is still in her own home. My brother and I keep her supplied and cared for and we are her main visitors, but she’s such a great person and a good listener ... she truly cares ... that people call and visit her. She has visitors in her garage, seated a distance away, with the door up. Pleasant times for all. Winter ... I suspect she’ll just distance from people inside. Some choose to mask up. Also, everyone tends to limit visits to an hour or so.

So far she has elected not to eat with people or have takeout. She is doing quite well and really does consider the virus a threat, and she’s making the choice to limit her exposure to it. She’s missing church and other groups she belongs to though. But she exercises and has daily routines and does all her own laundry, cooking, etc.

Our guidelines:

Time
Proximity
Numbers of people

Limiting those three things can be done while still having good experiences. I expect we will apply those guidelines to holiday events ... perhaps several short dinners with a couple of people in instead of one long day with a dozen or more people from all over the state.

Yesterday I tutored her a bit in the use of an iPhone. She caught RIGHT on!!! I told her if we get separated by this thing, we will need a means of staying in touch and seeing each other’s faces. So she knows about FaceTime.

Friends I’ve talked to can’t visit their elderly loved ones in care homes OR in the hospital. So the iPhone would help if that happened to us.

Yes. Someone I met today is financially devastated because she is a cafeteria worker at the schools and they can’t work remotely and don’t get paid when the schools are closed. She can drive buses but nobody is going to school. She drove the van for the senior center but it’s closed. The unemployment and stimulus isn’t enough to meet her bills. My sister has been slipping her cash to get her through. She is a single mother. They keep pushing back the school opening. Current plan is K through grade 5 in two weeks but her daughter is in grade 7 and has to stay home, but she said if you leave a 12 year old alone at home then CPS will come after you and she is scared, but they allow some children with special needs to come to school, such as autistic and she is applying to get her daughter to be able to come so she can go back to work so she can pay her bills.  It’s a horrific horrible MESS and all of it the shutdown not the virus. This isn’t someone wanting charity, she is desperate to get back to work and loves her work, she loves the children and loves the old people she drove for. That’s how we met her, she is wonderful and patient and loving and hard working.

This is one person’s story and there are hundreds of thousands just like her. It is the blue collar working class that is suffering the most, the ones that can’t do a job remotely from home, and the small businesses being shuttered forever. Trump’s stimulus package was NEVER designed for months on end. This is unsustainable, it is way past the point of reason.

Yet I’ll bet the teachers are still getting paid, which is why they are all for canceling live classes. It doesn’t matter to them.

The next public teacher that says teachers are heroes I’m going to smack the shit out of them. Heroes go to work. Heroes help their fellow man and their community. Heroes are the private school teachers who have continued live school throughout this Covid thing. Heroes check you out at the grocery store checkout line. Heroes are the bartenders and servers who are hoping to have enough customers this week that they are able to pay the rent.

I’m sorry for your friend Rush. As you said, it’s not the Covid that is hurting her. It’s the politicians.

Ain't that the truth.  Government workers which includes effing teachers and their effing Unions, plus what Government deems essential.  All others work from home.  Again THEIR new normal.

well, this retired guy still get his monthly retirement income.

And for those who haven't been paying attention, my position all along has been that all the masks and other stuff is a gross overreaction to a real virus.
