What's amusing is the OP is a MD/PhD educated at Johns Hopkins.   Yet the self anointed "experts" on PoA are attacking him.

http://steinmetz.org/peter/

So in typical PoA style, better to believe SGOTI over a highly trained individual that just may have better insight tot he subject.

Steinmetz gets attacked fairly often, which is strange. The guy is qualified and knows what he's talking about.

That's why he gets attacked.  Ever notice that trend over there?  Anyone who has substantial knowledge or education on a various subject typically is abused and denigrated at the amusement of the peanut gallery.

That is why it's damn near impossible to have any sort of discussion on that board, especially aviation related.

I do enjoy getting together and meeting some of the people at fly ins, but otherwise just treat it as entertainment.

It’s too bad. I was ready to go stir the pot harder by reminding everyone that we’ve all been wearing masks for months and yet we’re having the worst outbreak yet.

The masks in the danish study were n95 masks.  Anything else really does nothing except assuage the politician’s ego that they did something. It’s driven by their fear of being blamed for someone dying.

Another form of “it’s for the children”.

Exactly.  The masks and other restrictions also normalize unconstitutional government over reach and creates even more control and dependency .  People have been conditioned to embrace this crap.  Effing nanny state Lemmings.

and don't forget that we, the great unwashed troglodytes, are not supposed to use medical-grade masks.  Medical-grade masks need to be reserved for healthcare workers.

Note that I'm not suggesting in any way, shape, or form, that healthcare workers shouldn't have sufficient PPE.

I still think it hysterical that you guys regard a little scrap of cloth you put over your face as tyranny.  I wouldn't have guessed that in a hundred years.  You guys must never have seen the sign "no shirt, no shoes, no service".  Those are scraps of cloth too.  Tyranny!

You missed the post about grocery stores being closed in New Mexico and people standing in long lines for food like it was Soviet Russia? Bernie Sanders outright said that’s a good thing, I suppose you don’t think that’s a problem either. Totalitarian collectivism for the win!

It's not about the masks. It's the illegal threats of arrest and fines that is the problem.

Generally speaking the owner of private property may not use lethal force to enforce their no-mask policy on their property.
Generally the government, however, is allowed to employ lethal force to enforce such a policy.

So yes, requiring a scrap of cloth is a form of tyranny. Both Belgium, France, and several other countries actually banned the wearing of wearing clothes that obscures one’s identity (“burqa bans”). While Iran and Saudi Arabia require women to cover themselves from head to toe. All these countries have tyrannical measures.

In the past two weeks, I have found out about two people I personally know that contracted COVID.  One of them died.

Sal Ronci is a local performer,  He was the husband of a client of ours.  We went to several of his performances.  I sort of lost track of him since we sold our business and I haven't seen him in about two years, so this was a shock:

https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/coronavirus/2020/11/18/salvatore-ronci-daytona-beach-bandleader-obit-covid/6284159002/

Also, last Friday we found out that the SO of one the Veterinarians at the clinic we sold tested positive, and on Monday she also tested positive.  We have had both of them over to our house for dinner and cocktails several times, pre-Covid.  They are both in their lower 30's and tend to bar-hop and socialize at places where masks are optional and scarce.  Perhaps it is just coincidence, since masks don't work anyway.  Now, my wife and I are scheduling a  Covid test for next week.

Your friend that died.   How old and what else did he have?  I know nobody that has had it.  None of my friends or family knows anyone that's had it.

Number of cases is meaningless.   You know that, right?

My brother (66) had it, as well as his wife (60).  So did my niece (16).  Both brother and wife very mild symptoms, niece asymptomatic.

My 94 year old uncle who has a long list of health problems was exposed multiple times. He never caught it, and he didn't use mask.  All of his children had it, again, very mild.

I met a couple last weekend (early 40's) that had it.  Very mild, over in three days.

My main reason for posting was that after almost a year of not personally knowing anyone with it, I suddenly have three in my circle with it.

The guy that died was younger and fitter than me.  I don't know if he had any co-morbidities, but he was an athletic 60 yr old, about 6 ft and weighed about 180.  I am 8 years older, 3 inches shorter and 30#s heavier with high blood pressure and obstructive sleep apnea, so it worries me more that it might worry younger, healthy people.

I don't know the details of the young couple yet.  I just know they ignored all recommendations because they are young and invulnerable and assumed they wouldn't get it.

edit: I looked him up and I was waaaaaay wrong about his age. He was substantially older than me.  Perhaps it was his wife's age I was thinking of.  But I hate to admit, he looked younger than me last time I saw him.  He was 83.  Now I feel even older than I felt this morning.

sorry about your friend.

I think the reality is that covid-19 will continue to spread, kind of like the flu and the common cold... masks/social distance/etcetcetc will slow the spread with varying degrees of success, but it simply not realistic to think it will be completely stopped.  Many people have made claims wrt woulda/coulda/shoulda, but it was spread in the US waaaay too much before it was recognized.

The house that backs up to our next door neighbors house, the couple there both got it. She recovered, he died. I never met them, I think they were in their 70s. I don’t know if he had comorbidities. They got it because they had a gathering of family or something after the hurricane, they had some damage, I guess people were helping them clean up. These are the first in our whole neighborhood that’s gotten it that I know of. A few people at Mark’s work got it, but no one Mark has real close contact with, so he doesn’t have to be tested. But the guys that worked closely with those guys have to quarantine at home, and they can’t remote, they’re boiler operators. They’re having to call back people from vacation or something to cover them.

That’s all. Maybe we will eventually get some big wave here but we’ve had 9 months now of economic ruin all for nothing. If we eventually get overrun with it, I wish we had gone ahead and did it last March and got it over with, instead of shutting everything down. So fucking stupid.

You're alive Joe, thankfully, so maybe make a New Years Resolution to live a healthier lifestyle?  Or not.  The beauty is that is YOUR CHOICE.  You have probably the best GA plane ever made, so there's that.   :)

So your friend that died was 83.  Still, I am sorry to hear that, but it is consistent with what I am hearing from healthcare professionals.  Either old and or other health issues.  This virus over reaction is a huge government power grab and over reach.

The sad reality is that those of us over 60 are pretty much susceptible to everything...

In Maskachusetts, almost 90% of the people who die are 55 or older.  From all causes, each year.

(determined using CDC data)

Not only is it your choice, but it's your choice to make the optimal decision for you, based on your judgement criteria.  That gets missed so often.  What someone else values, even what someone else values for your health, may conflict with what you value.  We each set that balance for ourselves.

I've often told progressives that I will sign up to let them rule my life if they can do just one thing for me - ensure I will be happy.  Most of the time they get a funny look on their face and say "sure, what is that?".  Hey, if you don't know that already, you've got no business telling me what to do.

That gets missed all the time by people on all political sides. Conservatives miss it on social issues and progressives miss it on economic issues and things like gun rights. Everyone misses it on countless lifestyle, health, diet, exercise, hobbies, finances, education etc. choices. Most people tend to think that what’s best for them must apply to everyone else. The evil happens when they try to impose it.
