So we (the USA) send these countries hundreds of millions of dollars so to bring up their standard of living, etc, yet, for some reason their standard of living never gets any better.
So they leave there to come here, and we spend hundreds of millions of dollars to welcome them and to bring up their standard of living...............all while still sending hundreds of millions of dollars to the shithole that they abandon.

Absolutely.
We send billions of borrowed dollars to these shitholes, only to see corrupt governments keep it and then recycle parts of it back to US politicians. In the meantime we have homeless and hungry citizens here that are ignored.
Just look at the billions in the "Covid Relief" bills that went to foreign aid with zero to do with covid.

Been there. The place is drying up. Where I was should have been lush, used to be cloud forest. Looked pretty dry to me. If all you have is a small parcel of land and it dries up, what're you supposed to do? You stay you starve. You beg you starve. You migrate to the US, maybe you don't starve.
I felt really bad for the campesinos. The vast majority of the wealth in the country is held by the Latinos, themselves the descendants of the conquerors. They hate the Mayanos, who they feel are Devil worshippers because some of them still follow the old ways. Of course, the Mayanos hate the Latinos, fought a Civil war with them for years. Sadly the Mayanos decided to be Maoists, and we couldn't have that. Too bad, they had a point.
