Title: Is this racist?
Post by: Little Joe on November 29, 2021, 07:21:23 AM
It has been in the local paper all week.

I know of a lot of white kids that had to get their hair cut if they wanted to join the service.  In fact, I knew a bunch of white kids that had to get their hair cut when they DIDN'T want to enlist, but were drafted.

In case it is behind a paywall, here is the gist:
Quote
A Black JROTC student says he's being harassed after refusing to cut off his hair

Logan Rentz thought a lot about joining the U.S. Army before he entered his freshman year at Spruce Creek High School. In fact, he couldn't stop thinking about it — so he decided to join the JROTC program at the school to test it out.

But when he was told he'd have to cut his hair to wear the uniform that's characteristic of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, he was surprised.

Logan, who is Black, wears his hair in locs and usually ties it up in a bun. The style is also referred to as "dreadlocks," but that term has historically negative connotations. The News-Journal is using the term locs because that's the descriptor the Rentz family uses.

"I thought they were playing around when they first said it," Logan said.

He and his mom, Keshia, quickly figured out it wasn't a joke. He ended up having to make a choice: his hair and the ties it has to his family and their culture, or the class that he was so excited to join and where he had already developed friendships.

The 15-year-old chose his hair over the uniform, triggering what the family says has been weeks of what they view as harassment centered around a policy they haven't been able to get a clear answer on. Now, with their attorney, they're considering filing federal and state complaints.

What I got out of that is “dreadlocks” is now an offensive term.  I can’t keep up, I’m getting too old. I think I’ll just shut up and never say anything.

He chose wisely. I don’t think ROTC or any service wants anyone who thinks more about themselves than their branch of service.  Now sit down and

If I read between the lines correctly, the little pussy thinks the world owes him.

Now that someone told the little pussy "no" he just knows it's all about race, because the race hustlers have taught him that
shouting racist is the only acceptable explanation when the little pussy doesn't get his way.

Fuck him and the bicycle he rode in on.

If it were a religious requirement that would be different, but he claims it’s to acknowledge his family and culture. By that logic, a student of Scottish descent should be allowed to have a kilt incorporated into his uniform. I have Scottish ancestors, your plaid is a BIG DEAL. I’m sure it’s at least as big a deal as his family’s “locs”.

The service is not a place to celebrate your individual identity. The very term “uniform” betrays the idea. There is a reason the group’s appearance in uniform is supposed to be uniform. This means similar short hair for men and who knows what for women. Real equality would require women to have buzz cuts too.

The military isn't for everyone.  If he can't stand to sacrifice his hair, then how will he ever make a harder sacrifice?

When I entered the Navy, I knew that getting my hair cut and wearing a standardized uniform was but in the noise compared to the other sacrifices I would have make. Really it's totally nothing, and if it is something to someone, the service isn't for them. Go get more tats and work at Dollar General...

...and whine to mommy ( while living in her basement) about how unfair and evil everyone else is for not acknowledging how special they are.

In defense of the kid, he is only 15, an incredibly stupid age, where the superficial rules. Your fashion style and who you hang with are more important than making good decisions about your future. The military is a way to end up with massive benefits in the long run. Retire with a pension and free healthcare, with time to earn even more in a second career using skills you got courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.

The article talks about his mother and his “family” but I see no mention of a father. Where is Dad? Mom and Grandma are good for coddling one’s feelings but a kid needs an adult male to smack him upside the head when he’s being stupid.

He even already had friends in the ROTC and chose his hair over them. A good Dad would have ‘splained that a man needs buddies and the crowd you hang with can affect the whole course of your life.  Good decision to make friends that are thinking about their future. Terrible decision to throw them away for your damn hairstyle.
