Title: At the Movies
Post by: nddons on December 04, 2021, 06:08:20 PM
Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had a show by this name in Chicago.

I thought it would be cool to start at thread about movies that we might recommend. It doesn’t have to be aviation movies, but that would be awesome too.

I saw a movie tonight on Netflix called “The Grizzlies.”  It’s based on a true story about a new Canadian teacher who taught Inuit students the sport of lacrosse to improve their lives.

Here’s the IMBd.

Not a great movie (a little bit too storybook/fairy tale ending).  But it has its moments.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody a couple weeks ago. They didn’t beat the gay thing up too much, and I thought it was a really good movie, and awesome music.

Just saw a Fathom Event last night The Chosen - Messengers or something close to that.  If you haven’t yet you should binge watch The Chosen series.

Wife and I are AMC A-List members so we can see up to three movies every week. Not much we haven’t seen lately.

I've heard great things about The Chosen from multiple sources, I need to check it out.

We went to see The Messengers last Thursday and I didn’t enjoy it. It was 1.5 hours of what I thought of as pretentious religious/Christmas music and a 20 minute episode that told the story of Jesus being born.

YMMV, but I was done with the music after 30 minutes and wanted a story.  When it came, the story was Mary and Joseph show up in Bethlehem and there no room in the inn, so Mary has to give birth in the stable.  Sorry for the spoiler.

Sorry you were disappointed. You left out the other part of the story where they had to sneak Mary Magdalene into see Mary and Mary had her write  down part of the story that Luke needed to deliver to Luke and that Mary gave her the lambs clothes that were used to wrap Jesus in.

The music was wonderful and the people performing were so joyful and very obviously enjoyed performing.
Apparently MMDV

I might add, that particular birth was the most important in human history as Jesus was the Son of God put here on earth to teach others and then pay the ultimate sacrifice to allow us to forgiven of our sins.

It also might be the most famous story in the world, at least in the Christian world.  Maybe the second most famous, depending on who you talk to.  Personally, I've heard it at least 55 times already in Church and probably many, many more times otherwise.

I was bored by it again.  The visit was the only new part and it was mostly constructed.  There's no evidence that Mary (mother) stayed with Lazarus after Jesus was killed.

But, back to the topic....what shows to watch.

I keep wanting to say Dr. Zhivago. It’s still my all time favorite movie. Must have imprinted on me when I was a little kid. I learned how to play “Lara’s Theme” on the piano.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcth3ccFHh0

My husband says it’s a “chick flick”. No, even as a kid, too young to care about romance, I took it to be an epic story of how the communist revolution tore apart the every day lives of good people, and it became the foundation of my lifelong hatred of leftism.

We've decided to see Sing 2 first. We watched Sing the other night on Prime! Video!  We'll catch the other two over the weekend and on Monday.

After watching Sing I understand why Taron Egerton was cast as Elton in Rocket Man.

I watched “King of Boys” movie on Netflix, then the sequel which is a 7 episode miniseries, “King of Boys: The Return of The King”.  Riveting performance by Sola Sobowale as the “king”.  Some might find it slow moving as there is a lot of dialogue containing all kinds of metaphors, and a lot of characters you have to keep straight. It’s about corruption, organized crime, and politics in Nigeria. (Some parallels to what’s going on the the U.S.)

The end of the last episode of the miniseries is a massive twist I did not see coming and huge payoff.  But after all the long credits there is another important scene, then after even more credits at the very end there is one more brief scene resolving an earlier subplot.

That’s right, she did. Only 65. Got sepsis from a UTI. Was hiking when symptoms overcame her.  Yikes.

Hey, Beastmaster is on Prime too, I think I’ll watch that again too. Maybe they are offering them because she died?

It was not memorable.  I had to look up what he said last and I think they 1) intend to set up movie #5 and 2) might be sending a subtle nudge about evil people controlling others.

I have it on DVD and have watched it many times but not in a while. It's a great movie for sure but yes the last part is weird.  Sheen's narration is haunting. What's really cool is 17 or so years later, his son ,Charlie, narrated Platoon in much the same way and sounds eerily similar.

"In Cold Blood" with Robert Blake is one of my favorites also.

Watched the last Matrix movie a couple days ago.  It was clear from the beginning that they had to put out a movie that revived the main characters so they could continue the franchise.  I remember when NPH showed up and I said "Hey, it's Doogie!"  I honestly can't remember his speech.  Lots of flashbacks to remind the audience of the previous Matrix movies since it's been so long.  So... not great.

Certainly not the blockbuster of the previous 3, but not nearly as bad as I'd expect from the 4th movie in a sequel.  But yeah, a bit repetitive.

I’m glad I stopped getting raped by DirectTV and got an internet ready TV, but Jesus Christ it takes me 30 minutes to find something worthy of being watched, whether it’s on Hulu or Netflix. If I add something else like Prime, it will probably take me an hour. Soon the search vs watching ratio will be closer to the maintenance hours vs flight hours of B-52s.

Amazon Prime used to be great. Everything was “free” with your Prime membership. But then they added options to rent and buy which only blows up the results of your searches. Then they added “free with ads”.  I DESPISE ads, so those are no go. And I hate paying for the rent or buy stuff. Now 90% of results are not free with Prime. Why the hell am I paying the Prime membership again?  You can filter out everything and only see Prime results but it resets the filter off every time you log out.

I like sports, and subscribe to Hulu live TV late August thru the end of March madness, then it gets turned off until the next college football season. Yes, Prime sucks more and more each day, but I still do enjoy some of the Amazon prime streaming music, there is a decent selection of free stuff for listening. At some point, not too far into the future I think, the ever eroding value proposition of Prime will result in a cancel.

I pretty much still like the “free shipping with prime” (yeah I know it’s built into the price) and I don’t care much whether it arrives in one day or a week. I usually forget I ordered it and am surprised when something shows up. I have to open it to see what it is.

I used to think that Amazon Prime automatically charged rent for a movie if it is one that you searched for (since they know you want to watch it).  That's not really so, but I can still say that every single time I have searched for a movie I want to see, it is not free.  EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Honestly, for me and my tastes, virtually all the video services are like that.  The VAST majority of selections are things that I never have and never will want to see.  So I end up watching a few movies I like over and over--which gets old fast.  Maybe it's good--I watch less TV these days.

Yes, they rarely have anything I actively search for on prime. And most of the new stuff is absolute stinking garbage. What I do is focus on international shows, they’re much better than the trash America puts out these days. But you have to be willing to read subtitles, however I am so deaf now I always have to read subtitles anyway so that doesn’t bother me.

What really annoys me is when I search for an old movie and what they offer is a remake.

The British stuff is pretty good.  But I really wish that they would CLEARLY state that a film is in a foreign language with subtitles.  Sometimes I'm in the mood to just watch.  Other times I'm in the mood to watch and read.  If it's dubbed, PLEASE mute the original language.  I know enough of some languages to hear what is being said and hear (or read) a bad translation.  Ug.  Everyone should just use English.  So there.

The bad translation gets me too. Even with my deafness I can pick up some stuff and I know enough of other languages to know when it’s wrong. But I still like the original language audio. Nuance, inflection, emotion or whatnot comes through even if you don’t understand the language.

I hate that they don’t state the country of origin up front. You have to dig to find out if it’s there at all. Example:  “Hero” on Amazon Prime right now. It shows up in the category “International” but where on the info page does it say what country it’s from? I can’t find it.

Not a movie, but this seemed as good a thread as any to post this.
A few years ago I purchased all the episodes to The Outer Limits TV anthology (among other series) from Apple iTunes for something to watch while exercising on an elliptical. Yesterday Youtube recommended the following video. I couldn't recollect seeing such a dramatic scene - but as it turns out it is because the music in the original was muted to almost nothing. The poster, a retired sound editor, remixed the audio (and edited out some visuals) to bring the music to the front. While the clarity of the dialog suffers, the enhanced score does seem to add extra gravitas.

Love The Outer Limits.  The intro scared the Hell out of me as a kid as did some of the episodes but still watched. Thanks!

Yeah, that music is really scary.  I liked Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, The Time Machine, any sci-fi. Those were the days.  Even before the original Star Trek.

I watched the 2019 Midway movie last night. Horrific. Take Ben Aflick’s Pearl Harbor and dumb it down. Acting sucked, including from some otherwise good actors.  And of course everything was Computer generated. Seriously, how many Jap Zeros actually flew strafing runs between two docked battleships?  And the uniforms were sloppy and looked like they made them the night before shooting.

Just finished “The Railway Man” on Netflix.  Not made in America of course so refreshingly not woke.

It’s the true story of Eric Lomax, the Scottish soldier who was captured and tortured by the Japanese in the POW camp that was being used to build the Thai-Burma Railway.  I found it riveting.

I just watched "Dauntless, the Battle of Midway". OMG, what a waste of time.  Everything you said about Midway X 10.  Hollywood SUCKS.

A must see is “Thud Pilot.”  It’s a documentary and you can find it on the Roku channel, and possibly some other places.

https://www.thudpilots.com/trailer/

The first pilot on the trailer, John Casper (in the blue shirt) was shot down TWICE.  Rescued once in the jungle, and once around VN-held islands in the gulf of Tonkin.

He’s one of the most humble men I’ve ever had the privilege to share some beers with. He’s a good friend of some warbird friends, and one buddy got John checked out in my buddy’s T-33.

Here’s part one of I think a three part YouTube series of John describing his exploits in the F-105. I think he’s speaking before a CAP unit, so no salty language like you might expect.

Guys, I need help. Upon my recommendation my husband watched “The Railway Man” and told me it was a chick flick. We got in a fight about it. How can it be a “chick flick” when the core plot is the intense wartime conflict between two (male) enemies and how that impacts their lives for years to come?  Basically the same theme as “All Quiet on The Western Front” (the novel, not the movie.  The movie has the war part but is light on the subsequent PTSD part that’s in the novel.)  Sure he meets and marries a girl, but so what? She’s not very important to the story. It’s actually his buddy who pushes him to confront his demons from the war.

Anyhoo, he says, because it focuses on feeeeeelings.  Well yeah, but so what? Men aren’t allowed to have feelings?

This is the second time we’ve had this fight.  I forget what the other war movie was.  Probably Dr. Zhivago, which to me is an epic condemnation of left wing revolution but hubs says is a chick flick because of the Yuri-Lara subplot. Once again I point out that’s secondary to the main point.

Maybe the third time, because I argued “Gone With the Wind” was primarily about the Civil War and how it tore society apart but he says that’s the biggest chick flick of them all.

So I am embarking on a mission to send him a war movie that is most definitely NOT a chick flick.  What can you guys recommend? Because apparently I can’t detect “chick flick” contamination.

Rush, I think your husband is overreacting.  Maybe I'm turning into a Girly Man, but I like Gone with the Wind and Dr, Zhivago.  I don't mind romantic subplots or themes in movies as long as they tastefully done.  It is part of the human condition to have relationships with the opposite sex and it is a big part of life for most people, I think.  He needs to chill out.

Have him what Das Boot.  It's mostly about guys on a sub. There iis one relationship subplot, but it's about one of the Germans getting his French girlfriend pregnant..

We’ve both seen Das Boot, that’s a good one!  And you know it is entirely possible he is just pushing my buttons for entertainment.  He’s an asshole sometimes.   ;D

But I asked my girls about Gone With the Wind and they sided with him and said, yeah, chick flick. Little traitors.

The original Red Dawn, Blackhawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Full Metal Jacket.

I can't speak to whether or not "The Railway Man" is a chick flick...

But, what about "Twelve O'clock High"...

Best Cold War movie: Thirteen Days. But the key politicians are all male and have wives, so there are chicks.

"Where Eagles Dare."

Not realistic or historically accurate, but what a thrill ride.

This is a good chicken flick. Even aviation content.

Enough of chicken flicks. This one is in my top ten.

You men will diss it, because it involves relationships, but it rocks seriously.

I think you don't understand ALL the reasons why that movie will get dissed... and it's not because of any relationship between father and son (or lack thereof)

It’ll have to come to Amazon Prime I guess, right now says “unavailable”.  Sounds fun.

Rush, my favorite all-time war movie is The Devil’s Brigade. Some of the finest actors of the time. I think it’s on Prime but can’t confirm.

Long day (yeah, retirement can be tiring sometimes) and just need to veg out on something old and familiar.  The screen snapshots show the movies I already own via iTunes - which would you suggest I watch? EDIT to change that question to: given these were your only choices and nothing else to do, which one would you watch?

Waterloo Bridge was a recent purchase that I have only got 30 minutes into.  I have a hint to its ending, which makes me not want to watch further.  I might be persuaded to watch further.

"The Man from Earth" (TMFE) I watched just the other day.  Script is by Jerome Bixby, who had written the story "It's a Good Life" that was made into a Twilight Zone episode and also wrote the Star Trek episodes "Mirror, Mirror", "Day of the Dove", "Requiem for Methuselah", and "By Any Other Name". TMFE is filmed in the style of "Twelve Angry Men" with a Methuselah-related plot line he had been working on since the 1940s but only completed literally on his death bed decades later.  There is a hint in the story that the immortal in TMFE crossed paths with the immortal of "Requiem for Methuselah".

Btw, “Mirror Mirror” is probably my favorite StarTrek episode.

“Mirror, Mirror” did help originate the “goatee means evil” meme, even among non-Trekkies.

My iTunes collection of movies is a tiny subset of movies I’ve ever seen and skews to older stuff I remembered liking but had forgotten details about. Not sure how often other people buy old movies they’ve already seen. DVD collection skews another way.

I watched “12 Angry Men” because it was not too long and reminds me of the good times here on Pilot Spin.   ;)
LOTR would kill a couple days!

I need to watch 12 Angry Men again because I was the lone holdout against the 11 myself on the jury earlier this year.  It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it.

I didn’t even know you could get movies on iTunes.
