Title: More truth from the Bee!

Quote
CHALFONT, PA—Ben Culver is a handyman with a unique business model: in addition to being a home remodeling contractor, Culver is also a divorce lawyer. And with an estimated 84% of divorces being caused by home remodeling projects, business is booming.

The idea for the unusual double-business came while Culver was working as a contractor during law school. “The couples whose houses I was working in fought constantly about every aspect of the project,” Culver said. “As a future lawyer, I immediately started thinking of how to profit from their suffering.”

Culver says his business was always successful, but it has picked up significantly during the pandemic. “I slap a few tile samples in front of a couple, and it almost always starts a fight that leads to a divorce,” he said. “I’ve had to hire two more carpenters and a paralegal to deal with it all.”

But Culver may not be the only fish in the pond for long. Doug Yearley, CEO of national builder Toll Brothers, says his firm is planning to hire 50 divorce lawyers in the coming year. “We’ve started recruiting at law schools in addition to trade schools,” Yearley said. “We’re also going to advertise at the paint counter in Home Depot. It’ll be a total gold mine!”

Our marriage survived remodeling but I can testify to the threat it poses.

Edit: I apologize if you were expecting politics.

We built a house seven years ago, and the builders told us that sometimes that process ends up in divorce. We solved that one right away. I picked the outside color, and she liked it, and then I said "I'm done!" and let her handle the inside. I mean really, as long as I have domain over the garage I'm good!

In our case, Mark was doing all the work himself. So it’s not like I could boss around the contractor. Doing all the work himself gave him the false idea he could make all the decisions. You can see where that went.

In all our years of marriage she never once complained about my man toys or me wanting to learn a new hobby (like flying) or buying toys (like a plane) and was always supportive. When we built the house (built with the intent of it being our forever retirement home) I let her have total control over how she wanted it done. Really it was payback for all those years of understanding.

Ours was at the very beginning of our marriage. In fact, he was already remodeling the house when we met and I moved in with him, so in his defense, it really was his project and I was majorly invading his territory. We had no history of me “allowing” him all his toys although it turned out that I did.

If I were to counsel a young man today about letting his fiancé move in and try to direct him in remodeling HIS house, I would say hell no, don’t do it!  But in my defense we both knew we were soul mates from the get go and he knew I would be doing a lot of wifely stuff like cooking and he wanted me to be happy with the layout and everything. Or at least I knew it. He may have been under the spell men get under when they find a hot woman and imagine she loves him and isn’t going to ruin his life.

We have now built three houses, and remodeled two.

This last one about killed me.  Not so much fighting, although we had some of that, but between the HUGE price increases and horrible supply chain issues it was awful.

One example.  We ordered our appliances (and paid for them) six months before we needed them.  They barely showed up in time.  In the house a month and the refrigerator dies.  Three service calls from a horrible company and they finally admit it can’t be repaired.  GE says fine we will replace, but it will be March sometime before we can get you a new unit.  Here is $175 to buy a dorm fridge until then :(

Wow. I understand there’s a huge problem with construction right now. The lot next to us is empty. The owner comes and mows it once in a while so I introduced myself to him one day in mid 2020. He said that he was going to build his home that year but covid put a stop to it, maybe next year. Well 2021 has come and gone and he still hasn’t built and I’m guessing he won’t this year either. New construction cost might be out of his budget now. I’m going to have to try to catch him again and find out.

The good thing is we still have an empty lot next door. The bad thing is we really like him and his family and wouldn’t want him to sell the lot to some unknown entity.

Lol! Yep we are kicking around the idea. Have no idea if he is interested in selling but I think we might ask him to give us first dibs if he does decide to.

Buy it?
That's what we did when the lot next door went up for sale in September.
I thought the house was worth around $500k.  It is a great lot with a great view of the intracoastal waterway, but the house was crap.
They were asking $709k. Everyone that walked in was disqusted with the house.  It had not been updated since the '70s.  Everything stinks and is trashed.

I offered $450k and after a few weeks on the market, they accepted.
I sold $450k worth of stocks taking a tidy profit.

As of today, those stocks are worth around $380k.
I had the house demolished and removed a ton of invasive trees, vines and shrubs and graded the lot.  All in I have around $475 in the lot but I have already received an offer of $600 for it.  I turned it down because I am still trying to decide what I want to do with it.

Good for you.  We just like the buffer and probably would do nothing with it if we bought it. But then, we’d have to mow it. So there’s that.

I remember a story that you told a while back how you started mowing the grass.

When did that change back?

He took it back when I was having retina detachment problems last summer and since then we have kind of flip flopped back and forth but right now there’s not much mowing needed. We’ll see what happens when it warms up and he’s retired yet I’m still working.
