Title: POLITICAL truth from the Bee

https://babylonbee.com/news/school-thats-panicking-about-school-choice-being-implemented-must-be-a-good-one

DALLAS, TX—As more states pass laws promoting school choice, several reports have revealed that the most terrible, crappy schools are the ones most likely to oppose school choice for parents.

Local teachers from Cobb County Schools are frantically doing everything in their power to make sure that school choice is not implemented in their community. Looking out for the child’s best interests, they argue that students should have absolutely no say in where they go to public school.

“They are trying to defund public schools! They want all the kids to leave our school and go to other schools—but uh, not because those schools are any better.” said Peggy Layton laughing nervously. “With school choice, the kids will go wherever all the good teachers are, which is um…right here, with us… so uh we have nothing to worry about.”

Sources say the changes proposed by Governors around the nation are designed to empower families to make the best decision for their kids regardless of location or income. Teachers have responded stating that this dangerous decision will undermine education and is anti-children.

“For this school to survive we need everyone’s tax dollars, but again not because our school is terrible or anything,” Layton added. “We believe in funding systems, not students, because what do dumb students and their idiot parents know about schools? Only professional educators like us are suited to make these types of decisions.”

At publishing time, instead of working harder to inspire and educate the children, the frustrated underperforming teachers had all just joined a union so they could demand their salaries be quadrupled and continue teaching to empty classrooms.

I guess the sarcasm is when they start with Dallas, TX (very crappy schools) and then immediately start referencing Cobb County (I guess they have crappy schools).

This is LITERALLY EXACTLY what an educational “expert” said in this debate on the subject of homeschooling. He says children should be educated by “professional trained educators”, not their idiot parents who are too ignorant to teach the kids all the subjects the state wants them to learn. Okay maybe he doesn’t literally call parents idiots but the message is clear.

He also says children shouldn’t be homeschooled because children need to be around other non-parent adults to look out for signs the parents are abusing them and obviously all homeschool parents are abusive pedophiles.

By that logic the state needs to install round the clock video surveillance in all our homes. God forbid we leave children in the care of their own parents.

The educator is the second interviewee.  If you bother to listen to the whole thing, it’s very clear the pro-homeschool guest is representing reality and the anti-homeschool statist is stereotyping all homeschoolers as fundamentalist Mormons in polygamist families living in the middle of the desert or something.

He says the primary reason people homeschool is to brainwash religion into them. But the first guest, who actually looked at the data, says the primary reason people homeschool is safety.  I can testify to that. Safety was one reason we pulled our second daughter out of public school, when there was a gang related shooting near the campus. The other reason was the massive waste of time spent traveling to and from school and teachers not teaching but trying to discipline the badly behaved all day.

When I was in third grade (...and maybe earlier?  Don't remember...) I came home to an empty house and was alone for several hours before one of my parents came home from work.  Nowadays I expect my parents would have been jailed for child neglect, and I would have been placed in foster care.  As I recall the schools taught useful stuff and were not political.

I spent my senior year of high school at a rural Mississippi school.  Long story.  Anyway, say what you want about Mississippi schools--two of the best teachers I ever had, before or since, were at that school.  Important subjects, too--math and English.

The teacher I had the most respect for was a Democrat. He was our middle school history teacher. Never said a bad word about our country. Preached hard work and if you tried, you could overcome any obstacle. Badass mofo, too. Marine Corps Vietnam Vet, 3 Purple Hearts, Silver Star. He was my inspiration to join the Marines after high school.

What do you aim to accomplish by fervently discussing politics on the internet? Will you change the direction of things? No. Will you change someone’s mind on a policy or political viewpoint? Also no.

Enlighten me because I don’t see what the draw or satisfaction is.

I thought this was a place to discuss aviation. Appears that I’m wrong.

This is the Spin Zone sub forum, which is political.

If you wish to enjoin a discussion on aviation, we do also have aviation sub forums.

  Hope that helps.

I prefer high wing airplanes - better visibility in the most useful and interesting direction.
I've been studying ideas for novel VTOL (though I would not share the ideas I have in mind here.)
Would be willing to discuss experimental LTA airships.
I'd like to finally get my glider rating this spring.
Studying for the Instrument Airplane written exam.
These and a few other aviation topics are ones I'd be willing to discuss. What aviation topics interest you?

What is the point of discussion anything with anyone?  Yes, we may change someone's mind.  In so doing we may change the direction of things.  Each one of us may have a small impact.  But together we do make a difference to each other, to our friends and families, and to our community.  Why do you think that we won't change the direction of things?  Why do you think that we won't change minds on policies or political viewpoints?  In my time here, I've engaged in many discussions and my view has softened on some subjects, hardened on others.  But always I enjoy a good philosophical, thoughtful discussion.  And I enjoy the banter and tussles.  All part of life.

What's the draw or satisfaction of enjoying the company of the people here?  Same as anywhere.  Even you add to the diversity of this board.  Although all you seem to be doing now is trying to attack those of us who are here.  Try engaging in a real discussion.  Take a position and defend it.  We welcome everyone here.  But be prepared to engage in an actual discussion.  No moderation, no censorship makes this place here wonderful.  Yes, we laugh at PoA.  By doing so we reaffirm our stance that we here are FREE.

A bit rambling, but I hope that you get my idea.  Take a look at the other threads here.  Participate. You and your viewpoint are welcome here.

Hey!  Cool!
I did a bunch of glider flying in Tehachapi.  An extremely good hit.  Really taught me what energy control is all about.  Got to boxing the wake of the towplane when time and money ran out and I went back to school.  Someday I'll finish.

The Instrument Airplane exam is hard.  I took it three times.  Passed with a 98 the first time.  Then it expired.  Passed with a 95 the second time.  Then it expired.  Passed it the third time with a 92.  I have a year now to finish the instrument flying and get a checkride.  This time for sure!!  Goal is to get it done before OSH this year.

I'd love to build my own aircraft but my wife won't let me fly (or even drive) something that I build.  Very smart.

People who claim no one can change anyone’s mind on an Internet forum are only revealing themselves as close minded and static. They assume everyone else is like them.

I learn a lot, even on this site.
When my in-laws come spouting their liberal bullshit, I can counter it with stuff I hear here.

Some people like to talk about sports.  What good does that do?  Do they expect to change the outcome of the super bowl?

Well hopefully you can find time for it someday!

My pilot training started with gliders - out of Greer Field in Oregon (http://kpflight.com/coburg.htm (http://kpflight.com/coburg.htm)) Was quite enjoyable to fly off grass - but the area is not known for good lift. Almost every Saturday, weather permitting, from June 14 to August 20 of 2008 I'd go there for training. My log book claims 41 landings and 12.7 flying. My CFIG was Rena Cowan, whose day job was veterinarian. In late August she said I was good to solo, but the next weekend she would be out of town for a medical conference. So on Aug 20 I flew with a substitute CFIG who first wanted to evaluate me for solo. After 3 flights (usual number we'd do each day) he seemed satisfied. Alas could get no more flights is that day because I wasn't the only one wanting to fly. A week later they shut down for the season. Didn't return the next summer and in 2010 decided to pursue airplane training (my wife wondered what the point of glider training was - that's no way to travel!)

Was pleasant to socialize in Mike Greer's back yard airfield after flights:

We'll hold you to that! Better schedule training time Right Now!

98 to 95 to 92… is that a trend? Is it a linear inverse relationship to age?

When you're a teenager you know everything but after that IQ and memory decline as you get older.

Yep, look how easily SGOTI changed our minds.

I’d like to take the IA written just to see what I’d make.  I studied it a lot back in the day, did a lot of sim IFR flying, didn’t do any real except with my CFI.  Sat right seat while Mark flew in IMC.  Of course, I’d be about two decades out of date.

Then why did my Father get so much smarter as I grew up?

Parental intelligence begins at infinity, then declines as we grow older, bottoming out sometime between our late adolescence and mid twenties, even dipping into the negative digits on certain subjects. As we reach mature adulthood around age 30, it begins to rise again and increases steadily through middle age.

If we have children of our own, our parents’ intelligence shows a sharp jump upwards around the time we are dealing with toddler and preschool idiocy in our own kids, as we realize what our parents had to deal with. However it never gets as high as it was when we were very little.

As we reach late middle age, our parents’ intelligence once again declines as they become demented and we once again think we are smarter, except this time with a little more respect unless we are complete asshats.

May I strongly recommend Sheppard Air instrument rating study course?  It's a great way to prepare for the exam.  Once you've done all the book work, I found it easy to get into the exam mindset.

My CFII is in warmer weather until late Spring.  We're all scheduled and ready.  The plane has a new (sort of) glass panel, and is all IFR ready.  We're both amused that I'll be getting it done in a 170.  Wheee!

Sheppard Air was already on my plan for the written for the instrument rating. I used Gleim for the private pilot license certificate.

Good luck on your upcoming flight lessons - we're all counting on you!
