Title: New open aviation forum - Flyers Forum
Post by: Jim Logajan on September 20, 2022, 04:51:44 PM
Just what the world has been waiting for - another aviation forum! But here's why you might want to try FlyersForum:

https://flyersforum.org/ (https://flyersforum.org/)

FlyersForum uses a new user moderation model to provide an open forum for a large robust public community while controlling abuse of and on the forum.

We believe moderation is best applied by each member because they know best the members they prefer to engage in conversation. If you see two members in never-ending squabbles you should be able to block their posts from your view without having to ask a moderator to silence them somehow. Likewise, if someone starts trolling or stalks your posts you should be able to promptly block them from seeing your posts and vice-versa. Member-level moderation is naturally tuned precisely to the member's desires and sensibilities and the most timely mechanism available. We also feel that the ability to promptly block another poster from seeing your posts and vice versa greatly reduces the need for traditional central moderation and the sins that eventually arise from such "absolute power."

We hope you see the advantages of FF's choice of policies and self-moderation tools and will give it a try.

Are you going to make a similar announcement on the PoA?  Don’t take the question as a suggestion that you should.  Or shouldn’t.

Nevermind, I see Peter’s thread.

Anthony and Lucifer, should we delete this post and ban Jim from ever participating?  Let’s talk it over during our week-long PS Moderators Retreat on Martha’s Vineyard next month. We can light our cigars with $100 bills from the PS subscribers fees, and drink bourbon like the bourbon snobs we are. What say you?

All who participate in thread shall be sent to the FEMA Concentration Camps for Trump supporters. The de-lousing showers are not Zyklon B. They're not.  Trust us.

I looked at it and it looks pretty lame. Looks to mainly just be Steinmetz and Jim Logajan circle jerking each other trying to create discussions. I’ll stick with purpleboard and sometimes POA.

I tried to sign up but the confirmation email never came.

It was blocked as spam. Every other spam black-listing site but one says the host IP address we use is not a source of spam. The exception is prodigy.net which does its own thing. sbcglobal.net uses their spam-checking too. I've filed a request to have our IP address removed from their black-list.

Anyway, Peter should have forwarded you the confirmation link by now.

No, pilotsplace is equally lame, but that’s coming from a guy (me) who has accounts at all these forums and mostly just lurks. this new job Steinmetz and logajan started might be okay at some point if they gather a user base, but for now, it’s just the two of them circle jerking each other with Peter created half a dozen threads per minute trying to generate discussion. call it like I see it.

Like anything else, it needs a starting point.   I do see the member count increasing.

Instant gratification takes too long.  ;)

By the way, I verified that we could create an opt-in pilotspin closed subforum on flyersforum if the need arose. But we suspect many are comfortable here (except for Randy recently having access problems.)

I get that, I wish them luck, no intent to piss on their parade. basically just saying that I’ll probably wait for it to build before trying to bother participating.

Thanks for the well wishes. Understand your reluctance. My rain gear is a bit worn but can handle some piss. If I'm really lucky I have maybe 30 more years on this mortal coil and see no point in wasting too much of it on trying to please everyone. I get that you probably have a similar philosophy.

It's a technical hassle (with modest $$ cost too) and time consuming to get yet another forum started. I didn't see the point of volunteering to help start yet another aviation forum that replicated what already existed. I think it is different, at least in advertised policies.

How do you think businesses or any endeavor get started?  Participate or don’t, but no need deride a start up because you have a hard-on for the founders.

It sounds funny to say I’ve got a hard on for the founders. Truth is, I don’t, however, what I have observed from being a lurker on so many of these boards, is that steinmetz has far too much time on his hands and I don’t mean that to attack him, I state that as the diehard truth. Some time ago I recall he saying POA kicked him off the boat so he came here. Great, another member. Not only does he come here, but he blew up the place with rapid fire thread posting. Now he’s starting a new forum which, yet again, contains more threads than I can shake a stick at of him trying to generate discussion. His persistent nature is noteworthy, but for a neurologist with several ratings as a pilot, seems as though he’d have larger fish to fry than click between pilot forums all day long. No joke when I say that I ALWAYS see him online when I log in here. I mean, I enjoy it too, but seriously?! What a sad life he must lead

Seriously, I wish the two of these lads the best in their latest pursuit to try and mix the bowl another time for what’s already been done. I’m a lurker by nature, I don’t fly much these days, but I’m sure I’ll lurk on their new endeavor from time to time.

I've spent more time in the last few days on this and other forums promoting and defending flyersforum.org than I have expended in many years on a subject. Forum birthing pains, I imagine. Bottom line is Peter and I do have to commit a bunch of up-front time to turn a spark into a raging flame, to put it metaphorically. On one hand I have several personal projects that are not progressing because I elected to commit some time to this endeavor. On the other hand I don't like the idea of slacking off and seeing those efforts as going to waste. So I'm guilty as charged of appearing to be pumping up traffic.

I met Peter at the last Oshkosh. We obviously have different personalities although my response to online criticisms or outright insults may have been similar to his when I first got onto Usenet discussion groups around 1988. It took me decades to change the way I handle such things. It's a work in progress.

Hubby came home and told me he went flying with a friend today and didn’t tell me beforehand.  $100 hamburger at some airport cafe.  At least I got a lot of work done while he was out.
