Title: how conditioned are we?
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on December 15, 2022, 12:37:36 PM
A contractor at my Church (a Baptist church), was finished with her inspection and said "Happy Holidays" are she was leaving.  I, of course, responded gently with "Merry Christmas"

If you are in a Christian church, why would you not say "Merry Christmas"?

I think you’re right … we are being conditioned to believe that Christianity is offensive.

While it would be the courteous thing to do, and something I as an atheist have done as a matter of courtesy and respect for the beliefs of others (e.g. http://www.pilotspin.com/index.php?topic=4140.msg71478#msg71478 (http://www.pilotspin.com/index.php?topic=4140.msg71478#msg71478)), consider:

How often do you say Mazal Tov to a Jewish person on an occasion of a birth or wedding?
How many times have you said "Happy Rosh Hashanah" to such people? Last I checked that happens every year but the phrase has never been posted to this forum as a greeting. [Edit to add: A search for Happy Hanukkah does show it being used a couple times.]

Perhaps this is a case where recognition and courtesy for ones beliefs is being received in proportion to the recognition and courtesy being given to the beliefs of others?

Perhaps she was referring to both Christmas and New Years.

Some people unfortunately do intend it that way. I believe the only thing such insulting behavior accomplishes is making everyone miserable.

was it not clear that this person was in the Church building....a Christian Church building?

If I was in a Jewish temple (synagogue?), I wouldn't be saying "Merry Christmas".

If the person was an atheist or just not Christian, then perhaps don't say anything...

I've had several strangers say Merry Christmas to me recently.  Of course I said it back. This was outside of any church scenario.  Maybe it's changing.  I know, anecdotal.

For whatever reason, I follow the Jewish holidays and say just that. I respect other's religions unless they use it to promote violence and terrorism.

I often try to remember the Holidays of other religions as a matter of courtesy.

Of course, I'm not an atheist looking for attention by automatically taking the opposing bullshit position pretending to feel superior.

I do try to do the right thing and wish people the best for whatever holiday they are celebrating.  But I'm very afraid of inadvertently insulting them.  A group of Chinese students met me after class during Chinese new year.  I said "gung hay fat choy" to wish them a happy new year.  I got corrected that this really means "wishing you great happiness and prosperity" which is cool but is not the same as happy new year. OK, fine.  I won't do that again.  So I'm afraid if I wish someone Happy Hanukkah I'll be corrected that it wasn't a happy time and many Jews suffered during the 200bc Maccabean Revolt against their Greek-Syrian oppressors that was the start of Hanukkah.  Fine.  So I'll fall back on the Happy Holidays to avoid the problem and and keep from insulting those who want to be offended.  However, if I know the person well I'll wish them whatever is appropriate to their religion or region.  Otherwise, it's in self-defense to be bland.

I will wish someone the appropriate greeting if I’m aware of it, but if someone is offended when I wish them Merry Christmas, that’s on them, and is a sad statement on them that they can’t be happy that someone gave them a greeting.

I think that’s one reason why people don’t even make eye contact in big cities.  It’s not worth it.

I had a Jewish doctor once who told me that he is offended when people don’t wish him a Merry Christmas.  He said, “Why would they assume I don’t want to partake in the dominant holiday of the society in which I live?  Being a practicing Jew doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy Christmas too.”

I'm actually pretty happy when my Jewish friends wish me a Happy Hanukkah.  Makes me feel like one of the family.  Likewise, they are not offended when I wish them Merry Christmas.  It's all accepted in the spirit in which it was given.  That's why they are my friends.

I agree.

It’s about time we start to ignore and shun people who get offended by everything.

I stopped going to POA for that reason.  I admit to going there on occasion, but not daily like I used to.

Just saw a thread where the main PoA “Karen” is harping about seeing something he disapproved of at a local airport..

Bless his little heart…….

I swear these idiots look for ways to be offended in order to virtue signal and make themselves feel good. All self righteous bullshit.

Once again, we need to start shaming and shunning these people. They need to grow the fuck up.

And otherwise sane people abide it for some reason.

Is there a company out there that doesn’t have the letters DEI on their website?

Largely because the guys with the badge, gun, and arrest powers have chosen to be on their side.

Because their Democrat Masters, who PAY them, demand it.  It's a condition of employment.  They will also go door to door and confiscate your legally owned guns when they are made illegal by fiat.

The stupidest people on earth are liberal.

The most idiotic people on earth are progressives.

The most racist people on earth are the democrats.

The rest of the country lets them run over us.

I agree with some of that.

Racist, naive, hypocritical, smug, and a lot of other things.
But I wouldn't call them stupid.  I know some democrats that are much smarter than me (in a lot of things).  And regardless of what you and some others think of me, I don't think I'm stupid.

Part of our problem is underestimating them.

Yes, there’s a lot of power in refusing to debate and leaving the room when true discourse threatens. They get to bulldoze their shitty policies onto us when they’re in power, and claw at and smear and lie and label and whine and threaten us when we are in power.

So essentially, they’re always in power. Quite formidable.

They're smart enough to takeover every important facet of society we have. Education, MEDIA, Government, Entertainment (Part of media), Technology, Corporations, etc. And, we've allowed it. So who are the stupid ones?
