Title: T Mobile 5G Home Internet - any experiences?
Post by: Anthony on April 15, 2023, 05:41:49 AM
I know we have a lot of Tech gurus here.  Anybody have this yet?  What are the potential downsides?  They "give" you a 15 day free trial to see if it works for you.  My concern is that I stream everything. Music, Movies, TV shows, Videos, etc. and it wouldn't be as good (fast, seamless) as my home internet service through Xfinity/Comcast (Commiecast), the EVIL empire). I hate Comcast due to their hypocrisy and support (financial backing) of Democrats including Biden, Obama and Hillary.

The cost, at least for now is $50/moth.  I have to research what contractual obligations there are, if any.  I want to say it is month to month, but I'm not sure.  If you are locked in for a certain time period after your 15 day trial, I wonder what type of Termination penalty there would be.  Guess I have to g read the fine print.  lol.

My current Xfinity/Comcast internet service just went up from $75/mos. to $102/mos.!  It was $50/mos. since I got it about four years ago, then went to $75 after two years and now $102.  Remember, this is just for internet only.

Can't help you.  But I've been hearing the T-Mobile ads for cell service but I've been loathe to switch from Verizon.  My service is good with Verizon and not sure I believe them when they say the coverage is identical. Plus I've gotten good service from the local Verizon store.  But supposedly there's a lot of savings.

I tried it out. No contract obligation. Brought it home, plugged it in and never got above 20Mbps from it. Called then up, cancelled and sent it back. You will not get your setup fee back and they hit your card for the $50 pretty quick, but I did get that refunded.  You would have to try it in several locations in your house, generally needs to be by a window for best operation. Your mileage may vary.

Isn't that the service that says the $50/month will never ever be increased?  I've been considering it too, but I have had too many issues with getting out of "free trials" with other servcies.

Our internet/cable is Spectrum and it’s outrageously expensive.  But screaming fast internet which I need for my work.  They also respond very quickly to outages although I attribute that to local small town Texas work ethic more than Spectrum itself.  I would cancel cable TV in a heartbeat but hubby watches it all the time.

Hubby should join modern times. You can stream everything that's on cable and more. I haven't had cable for over five years. Don't miss it.

I can't tell him what to do.  If I try he'll just dig in harder.  The cable portion is $120 a month.  The internet is $80.  The rest is fees for a total of $233 a month.  Up from $218 in December, thanks Brandon!!  Really creams my corn.  >:(

I hear the principle owner is gonna blow up the world's largest rocket, possibly as soon as Monday morning.

Thanks Jim. Not available in my area yet, but it says expanding 2023 so we'll see.  If it is SAT based, then how can they have coverage issues?  Bandwidth capacity of satellites aloft?

You don't have to TELL him.  Make a Value Proposition to him.  He still can get X (insert favorite programming and more he can't get now), but only pay Y (tell him how much you'll be saving each moth and over the next five years.  Men usually understand logical, economic arguments.  Do you have Amazon Prime?  If so, you can stream a lot of their content for free.  There are other totally free streaming services, but you do have ads.  On YouTube for instance, it usually gives you the option th skip the ad after a few seconds.

Just a thought.

Bandwidth capacity seems to be the issue. One constraint is ground stations. But more likely not enough satellites overhead at any given time in a given area to deliver the promised bandwidth to everyone who wants to subscribe, hence a wait list and therefore not available if the wait list is full. Generally happens in dense urban areas, it seems.

We have Netflix and Amazon Prime. He watches stuff that isn’t on either of those but he does pipe from those to the large screen also.

I have DSL (150Mbps) and YouTubeTV currently, $51.59 & $54.99. YouTube is going up next month after my three month trial. It will go to $64.99.  We had Fubo but the they added regional sports networks without an opt out at $13.99 a month on top of a $5 a month increase.  Told them, bye, bye.

I have Amazon Prime which is $15/mos., YouTube Music $10/mos., and of course my internet service at $102/mos. So all in is $127. Five years ago my cable and internet were over $200 together, so while I'm still ahead it's catching up but inflation and all...

So the hypocrite that I am gets to fund three companies I hate.   >:(

I can't decide if that's dirty or not.

But I like it.

Not.  I got it from Big Bang Theory.  Penny says it, she’s from Nebraska.

It is a rural Midwestern saying.  Haven't heard it in years.

I’m following Starlink. I just bought a lake lot for a retirement home in the Wisconsin Northwoods and wired internet in some places is not great, and cellular coverage is spotty.
