Title: Why pilot spin has to be public
Post by: CharlieTango on October 25, 2015, 10:50:29 AM
I just did a Google search for "The Videos Are a Hoax! Completely Fake! All Lies! We Did Nothing Wrong! to see if the POA's spin zone content gets indexed in the search engines.

https://www.google.com/search?q=%22The+Videos+Are+a+Hoax!+Completely+Fake!+All+Lies!+We+Did+Nothing+Wrong!&rlz=1C1LEND_enUS544US544&oq=%22The+Videos+Are+a+Hoax!+Completely+Fake!+All+Lies!+We+Did+Nothing+Wrong!&aqs=chrome..69i57.2769952j0j4&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8

As you can see the spin zone's content stays private. This site will not grow due to search engines if it doesn't have compelling public content.

At least that's what I think.

I am open to making this public. This is forum is run by everyone. Shall we take a vote on this? I added a poll above!  8)

Actually, I will just go ahead and make it public. I will leave the poll up and if there is a change needed it can be up to everyone.  8)

What is the benefit of pilotspin being public?  I kind of like the idea of the SZ not being able to be Google searched.

I'm leaning this way, too.

We have people saying they wont join unless it is public and people saying they wont join unless its private. ?? I personally think the happy medium is like the current setup where you can start threads in the private threads area if they desire. I will monitor this thread for the next few days and if it is leaning towards privacy, I will make it private again.  ;D

We are likely to have enough whack jobs posting here, why would you want to take it world wide? I'm sure you all have read the comments sections of various blogs, youtube posts, and news stories and know exactly what I'm talking about. I like the idea of keeping this a little more on the down low.

Just my .03 cents.

Well, I think its pretty clear. No use in waiting any longer. With 2/3 of the votes for privacy, I will turn it all back to private.  8)

I'm good with that.

I hope this place takes off. <no pun intended>

I like it we have a place where we can hang out and dabble in douchebaggery uncensored and uncut.  :P

Without compelling public content how can you expect growth beyond the initial bump you get from POA SZ closing?

Pilotspin, naturally would contain that type of content but if its not public you would have to rely on meta data which doesn't really work well these days.

A model like POA works well due to the abundance of public content, seems you are trying to put the cart before the horse.

As long as POA keeps Jason's "New Spin Zone" thread as a sticky, those looking for these types of discussions will funnel to Pilot Spin.  Winning!

One sticky thread isn't going to do it.  Sticky threads become dormant, the event at POA will become old news and then where will the viewers/new members come from?

I think we mostly all agree that we want the "Spin Zone"-type discussions to be private - not searchable by google, not subject to random trolls, etc.

But I hear you about keeping the forum moving forward. What we gain in the next two months in membership could be lost in the next two years in staleness.

Perhaps there could be a single non-private forum, called "Topics in Aviation" or something similar. That could lead to traffic, and additional people who may wish to join the SZ.

Now, here's the biggest question:  how long before Jason throws up his hands and regrets founding Pilot Spin?  Jason, you've done an AWESOME job in just four days, accomplishing so much, and accommodating nearly everyone's requests. None of us would fault you if you just want to let this ride for a while so you can get back to your day job. :). Again, thank you!

I second the motion.  I think we should all double our dues payments this month. ;D

I meant to vote keep it private, but hit the "Yes" button instead.  Sorry.   ::)
