I can understand their dilemma. Say you love swimming, or whatever sport. It’s your whole life, you’re obsessed with it. But you’re also trans, so you transition. But when you block testosterone in your body, you really are not on equal footing with men anymore. Muscle mass shrinks when you suppress testosterone. So that puts you at a disadvantage if you compete in men’s sports.
But your muscle loss does not bring you down to equal footing with women either. You still have bigger bones, more muscle, longer limbs, and generally a height and weight advantage.
The claim that trans women are equivalent to XX women is false. I don’t know how they can say that with a straight face. At the same time, they’re no longer up to optimum male strength so you can’t say they should compete as a man. Their male competition now has ten times their level of testosterone. That’s not fair either.
My opinion is they need to decide what’s more important and choose one. Often in life you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Either be an athlete, or transition, but stop trying to do both. Either way it’s unfair. Either to you, or to your competitors. If being the opposite sex to which you were born is so important you can’t live otherwise, then find some other hobby or profession. People have to give up what they love all the time. Your selfishness, or addiction to your sport, is ruining women’s athletics.
