Spin Zone / What I would have liked to see
« on: April 03, 2020, 08:04:12 AM »
Instead of the WE ARE GOING TO DIE fearmongering, I would have like to see a rational discussion about reducing demand on our medical resources.

I, for one, am not going to pointing fingers and playing the blame-game wrt how well prepared people were.  (Howedver, I will piss on those scum that hoarded essential supplies, may they rot in Hell... yes, very unchristian of me).

We have finite medical resources, we needed to avoid the high demand.  We could have avoided some of the demand if people weren't panicked.  We could have avoided some of the panicked with rational discussion of the severity of illness.  Some people willl be infected and show zero symptoms, some people will be infected and show mild symptoms, some people will be infected and show serious symptoms, some people will be infected and get so sick that they require hospitalization, and, sadly, some people will die.

Instead of rational discussion, we get WE ARE GOING TO DIE fearmongering.

The reality is that a large portion of our population is going to get infected... (kind of like the seasonal flu).  Social distancing will only delay the spread, not eliminate it.  The number of people that will die depends on our ability to handle the surge of serious cases (kind of like the seasonal flu).

Instead of rational discussion, we get WE ARE GOING TO DIE fearmongering.

Spin Zone / Where do you draw the line...
« on: April 02, 2020, 06:56:05 AM »
(In the US)

More than a quarter million deaths due to medical errors

More than 38,000 motor vehicle deaths

More than 34,000 deaths due to the seasonal flu

More than 28,000 drownings

How many drug overdoses?

200 deaths from being struck by a motor vehicle backing up

COVID-19 projected to have 80,000 to a quarter million deaths

Compare and contrast what is done about these deaths (and who pays for the measures, if any)

Where do you draw the line?

Spin Zone / for those that insist we must raise tax rates
« on: March 31, 2020, 10:09:18 AM »
Maybe people might want to go after the delinquent tax(non)payers before grabbing more money from people who actually obey the law.

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/the-tax-gap

"The Internal Revenue Service periodically estimates the tax gap to gauge historical overall compliance of all types of taxpayers with their federal tax obligations. The estimates take into account federal taxes due as well as refundable and non-refundable tax credits."

"The average gross tax gap was estimated at $441 billion per year based on data from those three years. After late payments and enforcement efforts were factored in, the net tax gap was estimated at $381 billion."

Spin Zone / Any positives coming of the COVID-19 Panic?
« on: March 29, 2020, 04:56:34 PM »
Are there any positives?

How about:

1)  Kind of a dry-run for the possibility of an actual serious medical problem (unless we have the boy-who-cried-wolf syndrome)

2)  Providing evidence that remote workers can be effective (obviously not all workers can be perform their jobs at home)

3)  Some people will gain a better understanding of what essentials they should have on hand and in what quantities.  (not just TP)

anything else?

Spin Zone / Which generates a more violent adverse reaction?

Suggesting any support for President Trump?

Suggesting that the world's response to COVID-19 is an overreaction?

Spin Zone / Are you helping or hurting
« on: March 27, 2020, 10:08:18 AM »
Helping:  Maintaining your health

Helping:  Normal purchasing rather than holding off a major purchase (or hoarding)

Hurting:  feeding the panic

Hurting:  Hoarding essential supplies, especially gloves, sanitizer, cleaning supplies.

Spin Zone / more good news
« on: March 27, 2020, 05:06:17 AM »
Think this through to the logical conclusion (don't use emotion, use logic and reason)

There are infectious disease experts claiming that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US doesn't accurately reflect the number of people who are actually infected.

The lack of COVID-19 testing available means that only certain people are tested.  Anyone showing mild symptoms are not tested.

Also, logically, there may be people without any symptoms that are also infected.

These facts lead to the conclusion that COVID-19 is not as deadly as some fear.

Spin Zone / And the whining starts
« on: March 26, 2020, 06:30:20 PM »
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/26/perspectives/stimulus-checks-undocumented-taxpayers/index.html

Apparently the stimulus package provides for checks to people with a social security number and not for people with an ITIN.

"Since 1996, ITINs have been issued by the IRS to individuals ineligible for a Social Security Number -- mostly (though not exclusively) because they are immigrants who are undocumented. "

It didn't take long for the whining to begin.

Rusty & Student Pilots / training interrupted?

I wonder if the FAA will extend some time limits for people who have their training interrupted by the COVID-19 panic.

Spin Zone / Possible good news?

https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/coronavirus-nobel-laureate-says-us-will-have-quicker-covid-19-recovery/AWJN4WAM6VC7NPTBZLDC3JWGUU/

"A Nobel laureate at Stanford University says he sees signs that the United States may get through the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic well before many health experts have predicted."

"“What we need is to control the panic,” Levitt, who won a Noble Prize in chemistry in 2013, told the Times. “… We’re going to be fine,” he said."

btw - Worldometer is showing total US recovered cases exceeding total deaths for the first time  (I wonder if they only recently have been collecting that data)

So, given all the shutdown, social distancing, etc etc etc, will this all get repeated when flu season hits October-ish?

If not, why not?

Apparently, COVID-19 doesn't just cause coughing and respiratory problems.  It's causing people to get really really really stupid
