Cool Places to Fly / Re: Grand Hotel on Mackinac?
« on: February 05, 2024, 06:56:07 PM »
Just finished and did first flight on my RV-14A.

Wife has been very patient since we have been plane less for over a year (sold the other plane a little too soon).

Anyway, we are looking at a couple day trip to Mackinac this summer sometime.  Went years ago and it was really nice.  Would love to do the grand hotel, maybe we will splurge for it.

First Christmas for the wife and I without our daughter.  She went with the fiance to visit the soon to be in-laws…

Do have a number of friends coming over for dinner so that will be nice.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Sorry your cruise got spoiled Dan.

Thanks, we are obviously disappointed, but absolutely nothing compared to the Israelis.  Feels way more personal being this close.  Plus I’ve been talking with our guides for several months getting things setup.  We feel like we have friends that are involved.  Quote from one of our guides, after we cancelled and told him we would be praying for him and Israel.   Got to admire the determination:

“It is what is is
We are counting casualties
No much options.  Harsh Times.
The next few days Hell will be largely provided.”

I’m sitting on a cruise ship in Cyprus right now.

Was supposed to be day two of three in Israel, obviously the cruise line has been scrambling to make changes.

They have now cancelled Egypt as well.  According to the captain an Israeli tourist was shot by an Egyptian cop.  Haven’t found anything in the next about that, but haven’t look too hard.

Really sad to be missing both countries, but that is nothing compared to the Israeli’s  Had to cancel our tours, and the responses from the tour guides was heart breaking….

I think that by far, the biggest catastrophe of the COVID episode was the closing of the schools.
I'm hearing that the military is finding it even more difficult to find recruits that can pass the written tests.  It was bad enough when the fat kids couldn't pass the physical test.  We not only screwed the younger generation, we screwed every generation that will depend on those younger kids for generations.

RDS fought that more than anyone and was accused of abusing kids.

My company is in high schools all over the country, so I see a pretty decent cross section of kids around the country.  We are going to be paying for closing down the schools for the next 20+ years.  And, as frequently is the case, the kids that could afford it the least, got impacted the most.  We had schools closed for three months (~March - May) up to almost 18 months.

I'll never forget what one of my really good teachers told me.  This school had been closed for 18 months and was just starting up again.  He was just beside himself at how many of his students were gone.   No record of what happened to them, or were they went..

These are the impacts of Covid that no one talks about....

Flying up to Chicago tomorrow morning, then driving.  RV-14A isn't done yet :(

We (TangoFlight) will have a plane on display at the EAA Aeroeducate booth, and I will be speaking Monday morning.  Stop by and heckle me if you don't have anything else to do!

Cool Places to Fly / Re: Airstream Trailers
« on: May 06, 2023, 07:19:57 PM »
We had a 2017 Flying Cloud 25 foot.

It was really well made, and we enjoyed it.  We bought it to put in the hangar to use as a vacation spot for a few years until we built our house in Tennessee.

Then Covid happened, and we wound up living in it almost full time for two years….  By that time our house was finished I was more than ready to sell the Airstream, but it served its purpose well.

We bought it used (2017 in 2019) and sold it for more than we paid.  A function of covid shortages for sure, but they do tend to hold value quite well.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

I'm from East Palestine.  Still have a decent bit of extended family in the area.

The train tracks run right through downtown, and get a lot of use.  Remember playing around the tracks as a kid and hearing the trains go by all night.

From what my cousins are saying this is nasty, animals are sick/dying, people have sore throats, etc.

He was in a ton of movies also, going way back to his youth. Many westerns.

MASH is still my favorite TV show.  I usually watch an episode in the evening while my wife is getting ready for bed.

EAA has also moved the fence farther out at the front.  It sure looks like they did it to make it much harder to walk out the gate to buy the MUCH cheaper drinks from the house just outside.  Now they won’t let you go out that gate on foot.  You have to walk WAY around to get back to them

Ugh, stuck in Oklahoma City.  Flying up commercial and storms in Chicago have everything messed up.

Hm...  I stopped looking at Cardinals a while ago when the cantilever wing AD came out for it and the 210s.  It is the sexiest Cessna around.  It's plenty fast and has decent full-fuel payload of 670 pounds.  Not a lot of range, though.  Worth taking another look... thanks!

Put over 500 hours on our Cardinal.  Loved that plane.  Sold out to my partner when I finished my RV-9A.

Was able to get my late 80's grandmother into the plane several times with just a little step stole.

I’m more of a scotch guy.  Glenmorangie Signet is one of my favorites, but I like almost anything :)
