Spin Zone / Supreme Court Grants Review on 2nd Amendment Case
« on: January 24, 2019, 10:40:59 AM »
The Supreme Court granted review on a 2nd Amendment case this week. This is the first time since 2009 that it has done so, and many are speculating that this may be a test to see how the Supreme Court reacts which could lead to more 2nd Amendment cases.

From National Review's David French:

Quote from: David French/National Review
Under this law, if you want to transport your gun to a shooting competition outside the city, you can’t. If you’re fortunate enough to own a second home, you can’t even take your own weapon to your own home. You can’t take it to any other shooting range. If you leave your house for an extended period, your gun has to stay in your vacant home. If you’re going to another location — where you have the right to possess or even carry the gun — the weapon can’t travel with you.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/01/the-supreme-court-has-taken-a-strange-gun-rights-case/

This seems like it should be a fairly simple case. The idea that you can't transport a weapon that you own to anywhere other than a designated place by government is ridiculous.

Pilot Zone / A Few Aviation Questions
« on: January 13, 2019, 10:14:20 AM »
There's a lot of talk here about how bad it's gotten over at POA and other similar sites. That said, does anybody here read any general aviation websites that have articles or other published works, outside of forums? Here is what I read, listen to, or know of:

Forums
  • POA
  • MooneySpace
  • PilotSpin*
  • Red Board
  • Purple Board
  • BeechTalk

News/Information

*PilotSpin is starred because it's overwhelmingly politically related as opposed to predominantly aviation related

There's a bunch of Facebook groups out there that I don't read.

I haven't found any podcasts that I actually enjoy. I've tried listening to Uncontrolled Airspace but they interject way too much politics into it (and it's almost always anti-Trump). I don't want to listen to an aviation podcast for politics, unless it's directly related (such as the privatization of ATC or something) and even then I'd like it to be fact based or at least discussing the pros/cons of whatever the topic is.

Spin Zone / I Still Have One Question About Democratic Socialism
« on: August 02, 2018, 11:54:40 AM »
Article from Mother Jones on so-called "Democratic Socialism":

Quote from: Kevin Drum/Mother Jones
But I do have one question left: plenty of other rich countries have tried this before, and eventually they’ve all given up because it doesn’t work as well as social democracy or some other form of mixed capitalism. So why will things be different this time?

https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2018/08/i-still-have-one-question-about-democratic-socialism/

Mother Jones is clearly a very leftist outlet, which is fine because they don't hide it. I'm glad the author of this article recognizes and calls out that "Democratic Socialism" is really just socialism. I'm even more glad that he asks why socialism would be better than some sort of system with mixed capitalism.

Once again we come back to the most basic question of, "who's going to pay for all these social benefits"? You can tax the rich all you want, but eventually there's nothing left to tax. This is why Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio can't answer these questions, because they don't have a sufficient answer. Simply saying "make the rich pay their fair share" isn't enough anymore, because the next logical question becomes, what is that fair share and who decides what it is?

Spin Zone / Mexico Presidential Elections
« on: July 02, 2018, 10:52:30 AM »
Mexico held their elections yesterday and the leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador won by a fairly large margin. Some of his campaign promises include:

Quote from: Yahoo! News
His platform includes promises to sell the presidential jet, slash his presidential salary in two, and turn the presidential palace into a cultural centre. He has campaigned with the pledge of doubling pensions for retirees, increasing scholarships for students, and boosting production and employment in the impoverished south.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/mexico-apos-leftist-lopez-obrador-014647881.html

If he moves the country even further left, especially economically, I'm concerned about the effects that would have on the U.S. Trade issues will arise (though he's said he won't pull out of NAFTA) but if their economy tanks and goes the way of Venezuela, I would expect the immigration crisis we see now to pale in comparison.

Spin Zone / Justice Kennedy Retires
« on: June 27, 2018, 11:31:45 AM »
Justice Kennedy has informed the president that he will retire, effective July 31, 2018.

Quote from: CNBC
Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy will retire from the highest U.S. court, giving President Donald Trump another chance to fundamentally reshape the top of the judiciary.

In a statement, the Supreme Court said the 80-year-old Kennedy will step down effective July 31. The judge called it "the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years in the Supreme Court." Kennedy wants to spend more time with his family, even though they were content with him staying on the court.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/27/anthony-kennedy-retiring-from-supreme-court.html

I hope Trump nominates someone in the mold of Scalia. If he does, and when this person is confirmed, it was shift the Supreme Court for the next generation. The Democrats are about to go into panic mode. Once Trump nominates someone it will be up to McConnell to usher him/her through the Senate and to the confirmation vote. This will likely be a bitter process, especially on the part of the Democrats.

Thanks to Justice Kennedy for his years of service and I wish him well in retirement with his family.

Spin Zone / The Truth about Separating Kids
« on: June 18, 2018, 09:09:25 AM »
A National Review article about the separating of kids from their families at the border. The Democrats think they have a public relations win with this one but it's important to note that the Obama administration also did this, though that's being downplayed in the media.

Quote from: Rich Lowry/National Review
The Trump administration isn’t changing the rules that pertain to separating an adult from the child. Those remain the same. Separation happens only if officials find that the adult is falsely claiming to be the child’s parent, or is a threat to the child, or is put into criminal proceedings.

It’s the last that is operative here. The past practice had been to give a free pass to an adult who is part of a family unit. The new Trump policy is to prosecute all adults. The idea is to send a signal that we are serious about our laws and to create a deterrent against re-entry. (Illegal entry is a misdemeanor, illegal re-entry a felony.)

Spin Zone / Mitch McConnell is Winning the Long Game
« on: June 03, 2018, 08:15:46 AM »
I don't always agree with George Will or Mitch McConnell but I think Will raises some interesting points in this article. McConnell, despite his flaws, has been able to get a lot of judicial nominations confirmed, including taking a huge gamble on blocking Merrick Garland's nomination and subsequently getting Neil Gorsuch confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Quote from: National Review
The largest tax reduction in 31 years has contributed to the best economy in 18 years. Defense spending is up, many Dodd-Frank banking rules and the Obamacare individual mandate have been repealed. Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, blocked for 38 years, has been approved, as has a reconfigured National Labor Relations Board, a source of much Obama-administration mischief. The Congressional Review Act, under which Congress can disapprove many regulations issued by federal agencies, has been used 19 times since it was enacted in 1996 — 18 of them in this Congress.

There's been a couple of really good articles from National Review lately discussing the Trump-Russia investigation. Both Jonah Goldberg and David French are arguing that each side is over playing the other side while down playing their own. As with everything, multiple things can be true.

Quote from: Jonah Goldberg/National Review
The problem is that both stories might be true. The cartoon versions offered by the usual suspects on the left and the right are surely shot through with hyperbole. But both stories have some truth to them.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/05/trump-russia-investigation-separating-conspiracy-from-reality/

Quote from: David French/National Review
I’m in neither camp. I simply don’t know if Mueller has any “goods” on Trump or his campaign. He has obviously exposed a troubling degree of real and alleged criminal misconduct surrounding Trump, but he has not yet exposed evidence of actual collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. To the extent that I have a view on the ultimate outcome of his investigation, I’m skeptical that it will find that Trump or campaign officials actively conspired with Russians. The best investigative journalists in the world have been attacking this story for more than a year, with the help of a White House that leaks like a sieve. Yet no substantial evidence of campaign collusion — legal or otherwise — has emerged.

Spin Zone / Net Neutrality Repealed
« on: December 14, 2017, 02:02:31 PM »
The FCC has repealed Net Neutrality in a 3-2 vote today. From Ben Shapiro at The Daily Wire:

Quote from: Ben Shapiro/Daily Wire
The level of panic set off by the end of net neutrality is utterly out of proportion to the actual effect that end is likely to have. The basic debate over net neutrality is actually a reasonable one: is the best way to ensure a better internet for consumers to ban internet service providers (ISPs) from charging certain content providers more for their use of bandwidth than others, or is it to free ISPs to charge what they want, thereby incentivizing ISPs to compete with one another to offer different services at different prices?

Spin Zone / Tillerson Possibly Out; Pompeo Possibly In
« on: November 30, 2017, 12:37:49 PM »
It looks like Tillerson may be on his way out as Secretary of State and the current favorite to replace him is the CIA director, Mike Pompeo. It's also speculated that if that happens, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) may replace Mike Pompeo as the CIA director.

Quote from: New York Times
WASHINGTON — The White House has developed a plan to force out Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson, whose relationship with President Trump has been strained, and replace him with Mike Pompeo, the C.I.A. director, perhaps within the next several weeks, senior administration officials said on Thursday.

Mr. Pompeo would be replaced at the C.I.A. by Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas who has been a key ally of the president on national security matters, according to the White House plan. Mr. Cotton has signaled that he would accept the job if offered, said the officials, who insisted on anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations before decisions are announced.

Spin Zone / DACA Rescinded. Sort of.
« on: September 06, 2017, 11:32:06 AM »
I'm surprised nobody has posted anything about this yet. Yesterday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that Trump was going to rescind DACA after 6 months. Trump is (rightfully) leaving it up to Congress to deal with but of course everyone is having a melt down over this and calling it "cruel" and any other thing they can think of. Here's a few points by Ben Shapiro:

Quote from: Ben Shapiro/Daily Wire
The administration will stop consideration of new applications for legal status beginning today;

Those whose current permits expire between now and March 5, 2018 can apply for a new two-year permit. They must do so before October 5;

Some so-called DREAMers — people under the age of 16 and below the age of 31 brought into the country by parents before 2012 — will be granted new legal status. Others won’t.

Even after March 5 — the deadline for enforcement of immigration law, according to the Trump administration — the Trump White House says it won’t start deporting DREAMers in serious numbers, but will continue to follow the Obama administration’s focus on “criminals.”

http://www.dailywire.com/news/20625/trump-unveils-strategy-killing-obamas-executive-ben-shapiro

The article is worth the read.

The Washington State Attorney General and the New York Attorney General have announced plans to file a federal lawsuit to prevent Trump from doing this. This is silly because it's an executive order which, while having the full effect of a law, is in fact not a law and can be rescinded, modified, or changed by the next, or any, president. I wouldn't be surprised if the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals somehow finds a "legal justification" to halt Trump from rescinding this.

Spin Zone / Seattle Gun Tax Failure - Article
« on: June 19, 2017, 11:22:13 AM »
Quote from: Fox News
When the City of Seattle passed a tax on all sales of guns and ammunition, the measure was hailed as a way to defray the rising costs of gun violence.

But since the tax took effect, those costs have only risen as gun violence in the city has surged. And the tax has apparently brought in much less than city leaders projected it would.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/06/15/seattle-gun-tax-failure-firearm-sales-plummet-violence-spikes-after-law-passes.html

It's unfortunate that cities like Seattle have such a large impact on how the rest of the state is run. It may only be a small amount of time since the gun tax was enacted and there are certainly other factors involved in gun sales (such as the overall economy, for example), but this should be a pretty good indication that this tax isn't working. The city said it was to study gun violence, I look at it as another way to attack gun rights and try to limit those who can buy them.

Spin Zone / Trump's FY18 Budget Proposal
« on: May 26, 2017, 08:24:58 AM »
President Trump sent his first full budget proposal to Congress this week. It's got some interesting bits in there and some I don't agree with. Notable is the nearly 30% decrease in the Department of State budget which I disagree with, an approximately 10% increase in the Defense budget and lots of cuts to the arts, which I'm fine with. I would actually like to see bigger cuts to the Department of Education.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/23/politics/trump-budget-cuts-programs/

All in all it's actually a pretty good budget proposal though it's likely not going far in either chamber of Congress. This is the time for Republicans to step up and do what they were elected to do.

Here is a link to the official White House budget proposal document:

Spin Zone / Trump's Travel Ban Blocked - Again
« on: May 25, 2017, 03:09:06 PM »
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based out of Richmond, VA, blocked Trump's revised travel ban on the grounds that it violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. There's a number of issues with their ruling and this will likely end up at the Supreme Court. In part, the Chief Judge essentially said that Trump's justification that these countries have a terrorism problem wasn't good enough:

Quote from: The Associated Press
But Chief Judge Roger L. Gregory wrote that the government's "asserted national security interest ... appears to be a post hoc, secondary justification for an executive action rooted in religious animus and intended to bar Muslims from this country."

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_TRAVEL_BAN_LAWSUITS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2017-05-25-17-49-47

Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen are the countries that this executive order affected. From the State Department website on the list of state sponsors of terrorism:

Iran
Sudan
Syria

https://www.state.gov/j/ct/list/c14151.htm

Here's Ben Shapiro's take:

http://www.dailywire.com/news/16874/judicial-tyranny-fourth-circuit-upholds-national-ben-shapiro

Activist judges are going out of their way to ensure that Trump's power is limited. Never mind that when Obama did something similar it was just fine.

Spin Zone / AHCA Vote Today
« on: May 04, 2017, 08:48:56 AM »
The Republicans are going to try to pass this bill in the House, again, today. They're saying they have the votes this time. Even if they do, it'll be a much tougher fight in the Senate. I hope the entire thing fails because it's not an Obamacare "repeal and replace" bill at all.

Quote from: Reuters
WASHINGTON, May 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives was set on Thursday for a cliffhanger vote to repeal Obamacare, as Republican leaders worked to deliver President Donald Trump a win for one of his top legislative priorities.

House Republican leaders have expressed confidence the bill would pass and several party moderates who previously objected to it got behind it on Wednesday, giving the effort new momentum.

http://news.trust.org/item/20170504100736-68gw1

If this bill is signed into law, the Republicans will not care about repealing Obamacare at all. Once Obamacare was injected into the federal government and onto the lives of Americans, it was likely to remain permanently, even if its form was altered. The Republicans are obviously just fine with federal healthcare so long as they are the ones who pass it, not Democrats.
