Spin Zone / Chevy pulls the plug on the Volt after 9 years of losing money
« on: November 27, 2018, 07:56:31 AM »
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/gm-pulls-plug-chevrolet-volt-004100630.html

GM lost money on every Volt built. Consumers were given from $3000 to $7500 in federal tax money to buy them, but even with that Consumers saw little gain from the over-priced, and under-delivered electric-gas hybrid.

Toyota has had marginal success with electric-gas hybrid, however their gas-electric hybrid has had very good success over the years, noting that the fuel economy of the Prius is largely determined by the Atkinson-cycle engine, and has little to do with the battery efficiency.

I've owned 6 gas-electric hybrids over the years, and investigated the Volt for its economy and utility. I was not impressed enough to buy one although it had some nice features. the Nissan Leaf(all electric, no gas) is said to be hanging on by it's fingernails due to poor sales, and high initial cost. Having driven a Leaf for a demo, I can see why.

Also says globalism of liberal values is worth defending.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it France who has been the most outspoken nationalists since - forever? As I recall me French history, they have fought with EVERYONE in Europe and parts of the African and islands around them. Refused US troops on French soil under NATO command. they also just passed, and Macron signed a very tough new immigration bill: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-43860880  to stem the tide of 'global' people from entering the country.

So, I think what he meant is: Nationalism, and being elite in France is good. Nationalism by the US, Russia, Germany, etc is bad - because, well they are not French.

Macron is a lightweight douche bag.

Spin Zone / Fixing the 2nd amendment
« on: November 09, 2018, 08:29:55 AM »
I've been giving this some thought since the concert shooting in LV, and I think I might have a framework for a solution. It will necessarily infringe on the current almost unlimited liberty we have, but so far I don't see a way to prevent that. The reason I've taken this up is to move the US away from the murder capital of the first world(many third world countries have far more gun deaths), and see if we can provide the security that the framers intended when making the bill of rights.

First off, the reasoning for the 2nd A must be examined. I've always considered that the amendment stands at a guarantee of all the other amendments, and also as the final brake and regulation on an out of control federal govt. In the last, worst case the people rising up with arms would suppress a truly mad dictator or despot should one ever seize control of the fedguv and start making massive changes like suspending rights, and locking up legislators/judges. My goal is to protect the republic, and the people while still regulating gun ownership to some extent.

There are and always will be those who do not want, and will not accept any limitations on gun ownership and operation. I have been one of those for a long time, but I'm gradually changing my thinking. The 2nd A is not without limits. Right now, ownership of automatic weapons is generally considered unlawful, although that regulation hasn't really been tested. However, 'arms' has never been accepted to mean rockets, mines, artillery, missiles(explosive), chem weapons, nuclear devices, and various other war-making  materiel. So, practically speaking, there are already limits to the 2nd A for the benefit of the govt, and the limitations of the people.

The wording of the amendment does allow us a bit of leeway to work with. I'm talking about the 'militia' clause. "A well-regulated militia..." gives us an opportunity to mess around with definitions, and also to frame the law in a way that would not gut the original use and meaning too much.

Here's my start, fully willing to hear complaints, and rants, and screaming fits. Some might even use this opportunity to offer edits, and modifications either way, rather than base critique.

"The second amendment to the US Constitution is hereby modified as such:
* A well regulated militia will be founded in each state of the republic.
* The militia of each state shall be maintained by the governors of the various states.
* All responsible citizens are eligible to become militia, without any limitation but that they be over 16, and of good standing.
* All citizens of the various states shall be authorized to keep and bear arms unless found unfit under due process of high crimes or felonies.
* Each state shall respect the rights of citizens of the various states, and no person shall be denied keep and bear arms when in another state.
* ANY business, location, school, house of worship, or other place or building which prohibits the free exercise of the right to keep and bear arms shall take full responsibility, control, and regulation that the security of those in such prohibited locations are fully, and completely protected from harm by those with arms. "

Here's how I see it play out. First, the power to keep and bear arms is moved out of the fedguv and into state jurisdiction. I have always been a proponent of distributing the power away from the fedguv and into the states. What works in NY doesn't work in WY. Next, the governors of the state will have input on just how forcefully they want to try to control the gun regulations. Some states will work with the rest of the judiciary to limit via due process, and some will not. Everyone by default can be a member of a militia, and therefore eligible to keep and bear arms, unless or until they are found unfit. This is the way it is now, but the state gov will be responsible for maintaining the right. Reciprocity means if a citizen of FL travels with their weapon to NJ, they cannot be denied the right just because they left their own home state. Finally, I'm tired of places putting up "No Firearms" and then exposing the people to harm without responsibility. If a nightclub, or church, or library is going to deny the 2nd A right by individuals, then that facility must be responsible for the peoples security. This includes hotels, bars, offices, etc. If my place of business says no firearms, then it's up to the management of the facility to see that NO ONE has firearms. Which means searching, and denial of entry and also secure perimeters to prevent a weapon being smuggled in.

Nothing is foolproof. Nothing is complete. Nothing is absolute. This is what I have so far.

Spin Zone / Chinese auto parts. Can no longer avoid
« on: November 08, 2018, 08:05:54 AM »
It seems now official, there are no more auto parts made anywhere but China. I've been to 4 different retailers, including the factory, and I can't find non-Chinese brake rotors for my truck. Dodge couldn't tell me the country of origin. I tried to tell them that the country of origin is required by law for products sold retail in the US, but they don't care. When I looked at the stampings on the rotor, I compared it to AutoZone, and it's the same damn shit in a Mopar box. The only difference was a 120% cost markup because it has the Dodge logo on the outside.  Luckily, AutoZone is following the rules and they are clearly made in China on the box.

Last timing belt job done I had to source the bearings from Motion Industries as all the kits came with Chinese junk bearings.

ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I blame Trump. No reason, just cause I'm pissed off.

Pilot Zone / Do I deserve another plane? What would you buy?

I've been a good boy. Kids though college, tuition's all paid, retirement pretty darn secure(could always have more, but we'll do fine), decent health, nice place to live, and a remote place to get away.

I'm thinking in the $60-100k range. Paying cash, I don't finance toys. Things not on the radar: rotary wing; Cessna(don't like them).

And after this - BO sent Iran billions of dollars, and let the Chinese steal our IP almost completely unchecked. What a massive failure, that under any other admin would have been page one news for weeks as it uncovered all those guilty of failure. Dozens of people faithful to the US were abandoned and paid the ultimate price for the mistakes. Isn't it strange, that even now in this article there is NO mention of who was Sec of State during the exact dates the coincide with this foreign policy train wreck. Yes - you know who it was, don't even bother to google it.

Spin Zone / Fixing baseball(MLB)
« on: October 24, 2018, 05:46:10 PM »
OK, it's time. I'm watching the Oct classic the World Series. We need to fix baseball in the US. I'm going to just blurt out my fixes, and then all may attack, ridicule, and belittle my plans. But - know this. I am a long, long, long time fan of baseball here. Not some fair weather fan.

We have problems in baseball. Myriad problems that have crept into the game in the past forty years(a bit longer, but that's the relevant time). Changes that were supposed to solve some problems have actually made things worse. Other problems have been half way fixes. Some of my fixes are structural, some are rule related, and some are officiating(not the same as rule). Here we go.

1. The fences in any ball park shall be no nearer home plate than 365 linear feet. No lower than 12' from the playing surface. (fixing the shameful number of runs by homers)
2. Infield placement shall be two fielders on the first base side of 2nd, and two fielders on the 3rd base side of 2nd when the pitched ball crosses home plate. (I don't care how close to the centerline from home to 2nd, but no more shortstops way over on the far right, and no more 2nd basemen way over on the left) Any infielder may cross the centerline to field a ball in play, or to make an out at another base if they have the ball.
3. Pitchers mound is moved back from the current location a minimum of 6". (I'm talking to you Dodgers)
4. Pitchers mound shall be no higher than 12" from the elevation of the vector from the surface of home plate to the ground under 2nd base. (Again Dodgers, Drysdale is dead and buried)
5. On any ball hit in the field of play, a baserunner running on, or inside the white line to first is an immediate out. (can you tell I was a 1st baseman?)
6. The infield fly rule is applied ONLY to a ball hit into the infield. (risk, it's what we live for)
7. Batter may only call timeout if falls during the swing of the bat, or wants to change from batting left to right or vice versa. Umpire will determine if the batter has 'fallen' and can't get up. Batter must be prepared to bat as soon as he is in the box. Stepping out of the box does not constitute time out.
8. All ball and strike calls are done electronically, as determined by the entire ball crossing the entire white part of the plate, and from the batters knee to their shoulder, inclusive. (We have the technology)
9. No more challenge. No more video replay. Umpires may conference together on a call, but all fielding play calls are done on the field of play.
10. The 'balk' rule is revoked. Pitcher may pitch from the stretch at any time. Pitcher may halt in any motion during the windup and before delivery.
11. No more than 2 pitching changes until the 7th inning. No more than 2 pitching changes after the 7th complete inning. If a pitcher must come out and exceed the limit, that pitcher being replaced is out for min 8 games with IR status.
12. TWO warm up pitches for pitcher coming in to the game from the mound.
13. More than 4 pickoff throws to first base during an at bat will count as one ball counted to that batter.
14. More than 4 foul balls during an at bat will be called an out.
15. ONE and only one mound conference per pitcher per game. Second trip to the mound by catcher, coach or fielder will result in a pitching change(see rule 11).
16. Yankees may only field 8 players during the months of July and Sept. (hahahahahhahaaa!!!)

Whew, that's a good start. Getting the ball in play more, and fewer homers, and less wasted time should liven things up nicely. My goal(if you are not a BB fan) is to get more batters through the box and on to the bases. Also to speed up the game.

This is the test case that everyone is saying will wind up in the supreme's lap.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/harvard-discrimination-trial-reveals-ivy-league-schools-different-sat-standards-for-asian-americans

The defenders from Hahvahd have just bald-faced lie about racial bias in admissions, and the other side has documented it quite well. We will see what kind of strict construction the new court comes up with.

My two cents worth. I can see both sides of this argument. Minorities will not be well represented in schools like Hahvahd if they just go straight off test scores and grades. But - the big rub comes in where we find out who gets to have their hands on the levers of admission, and why it's all done in secret. If they are going to use race, then say they are going to use race publicly. If they are going to score different races on different standards then publish those standards, stand up and admit it and defend it. Why is Hahvahd trying so hard to keep this under wraps? If they aren't doing anything against the law, then tell us your goals, aspirations, and reasoning for using bias to improve the student body mix, and give the disadvantaged a leg up.

On the other hand, I can see an Asian minority wondering why they work so hard, if they have to compete with others on an uneven playing field. It's quite personal to the student when they are not admitted for something they have absolutely no control over. "I'm sorry Kim-Soo, but you are just too smart, successful, honest, healthy, and giving of your time to attend Hahvahd. We are giving a slot to a Eduardo because he's from Colombia, and he's disadvantaged." It would make me furious.
