Accident Review/Never Again (I hope..) / Trevor Jacob Fiasco
« on: January 22, 2022, 10:25:14 AM »
A lot of people are talking about the "crash" of that nice Taylorcraft, and how it seems to have been a planned stunt.  Many videos on the topic, and speculation on how Jacob's ass is grass in the FAA's view.  Anyway, one video producer mentioned an interesting coincidence that I have not seen elsewhere:  Jacob's incident was 50 years to the day from DB Cooper's jump from the airliner.  I have not checked this out personally, and have no idea if it's true, or even significant.  Anyway, just working on my post count.

Spin Zone / Results already?

They're reporting preliminary results on TV.  I thought they couldn't do any reporting until after the polls closed in the west.  What gives?

Pilot Zone / Semi-hypothetical annual inspection question
« on: October 24, 2020, 01:46:45 PM »
An airplane's annual inspection is due in October.  This means that the owner has until the end of the month to get it done. (Yes, I know that most start their annuals at the end of the month so the new annual is signed off at the beginning of the next month, thereby getting 13 months out of their previous annual.)

The work is begun in the middle of the month, and the mechanic finishes the job in a day or two, but is lazy about the logbook writeups and signoffs.  Question is, can the owner fly the plane anyway, since the old annual is still valid?  Or does starting a new annual somehow start a new clock running that invalidates the old annual?

The debates are going on as I type.  I am not watching because I already know who I am going to vote for, so whatever happens during this debate is immaterial.

I hope Trump wins the 2020 election.  I hope this out of practical considerations like our national economy or our relationship with China, but mostly because I really, truly enjoy watching liberal heads explode.

But if he does not win, then I will still consider his presidency a success by virtue of his court appointments.  He has made a substantial difference to the makeup of the 9th Circuit, which I appreciate as a Californian, but he has also changed the makeup of the US Supreme Court,  changes that will last for a generation.  And who is to say that even though the country has (according to the MSM) made a turn to the left, that at some point in the future it couldn't make an equally hard turn to the right?

Anyway, I shouldn't drink so much during debates, and especially shouldn't post to social media.

The ninth circuit has upheld Judge Benitez's ruling that the "high capacity" magazine ban in CA is an infringement of the right to keep and bear arms protected by the Second Amendment.  Yes, the ninth circuit.  Only a three-judge panel, though, and the vote was 2-1.  Anyway, here's the opinion:

So for a while, at least, we may  experience a bit of freedom here in our socialist worker's paradise.

Spin Zone / Very interesting

If you haven't been following the other forum, you may have missed this.  I'm sure the computer-savvy know what's going on, but to the rest of us it's quite misleading.  Anyway, do this:  Go to google.com, type in any 3-digit number followed by "new cases" and search.

I would never have found this myself since my religion forbids using Google.

Edit:  Sheesh even Duck Duck Go does the same thing.  Is this actually legit?

Spin Zone / Synthetic motor oil
« on: May 15, 2020, 11:30:55 AM »
I keep trying to get you guys to talk about something other than C19, although I admit I have never considered the fact that underwear plus pants still don't completely filter a fart.

Anyway, I recently changed the oil in my pickup (Dodge 1500 gas), switching over to full synthetic oil.  Since then I would swear that the water temp is lower than normal.  My gauge doesn't have numbers (too confusing to the average driver, I guess) but it looks to me like the temp is about a needle-width lower.  If I'm not imagining this, it strikes me as being very strange, since the water temp is normally regulated by the thermostat and should be independent of oil type unless the engine is actually now not reaching full operating temperature.  Any thoughts?

Just because I'm getting sick and tired of hearing and seeing nothing but C19 stories...

Can anyone tell me what this boy does wrong?:

(Or maybe I'm just over-cautious)

Edit:  You can save some time by skipping to a couple minutes into the video

Spin Zone / Good news for California shooters

Some here who are not Californians may not know that California recently enacted legislation requiring, among other things, background checks for purchases of ammunition.  Yesterday US District Court Judge Roger Benitez ruled that such checks are unconstitutional and granted the plaintiffs' request for an injunction stopping enforcement.

More info here:

https://crpa.org/news/litigation/crpa-wins-major-battle-in-lawsuit-challenging-prop-63s-ammunition-sales-restrictions/

A PDF of the actual ruling here:

https://michellawyers.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/2020-04-23-Order-Granting-MPI.pdf

The language of the decision makes it clear that Judge Benitez gets it.  Thankfully, there are still a few judges who know and believe in the US Constitution.

Spin Zone / I'm so bummed

You used to be able to get:

a free churchkey at any liquor store (the software here doesn't even like the word "churchkey")
a free yardstick at any hardware store
a free carpenter's pencil at any lumberyard
a free road map at any gas station

Okay, I admit it.  This is just a gratuitous post to try to build my post count.  "Junior member"?  Sheesh.  But at least I didn't mention the coronavirus.

Spin Zone / Who should I vote for?
« on: February 28, 2020, 09:29:07 AM »
I am registered as a "declines to state party" (or something like that) here in California, which allows me to vote in the democrat (but not Republican) primary.  I would ordinarily never vote for a democrat, of course, but I hate to pass up an opportunity to do damage if there is one.  I can think of two approaches:

1) vote for the candidate who would be the most benign if he won (Biden?) or

2) vote for Sanders, since many think he would lose big against Trump.

I am not very politically astute, so I would be interested in hearing the opinions of others.

Pilot Zone / Why turboprops for smaller airliners?
« on: January 21, 2020, 11:53:56 AM »
It occurred to me that I don't understand the motivation behind turboprop powerplants in smaller airliners typically used by regional operators.  Is there some sort of efficiency line crossed when an airplane is scaled-up to "full-sized" airliner?  If jet engines are the cat's meow, why not use them everywhere?
