Spin Zone / Current suspicious package issue
« on: October 24, 2018, 07:57:43 AM »
Predicting now this bomb story is a radical-alt-left-government-media complex ploy.

That is how cynical their behavior has made me.

They get to talk about threats and civility out of one side of their mouth while at the same time encouraging their brownshirts to go out chasing Republican politicians out of restaurants, annoying them at home, etc., out of the other side of their mouth.

This is not the style of the right - timing is far too suspicious.

So, the Plus One Flyers club I belong to is adding a gorgeous Cessna 180 to the line, at my home field where I keep the Yak.

$175/hr, 160 mph cruise, 950 useful.....

I am REALLY looking forward to this.

Spin Zone / First Man - Short Review
« on: October 14, 2018, 02:48:12 PM »
The pro’s – the flight and space sequences were very well done, good attention to detail and period correct as best as I could tell. Sound design was very good for these sequences as well. They were good but, IMO, no better than Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff.

The con’s – Ryan Gosling’s portrayal did not, for me, create a relatable or sympathetic character, to the contrary I thought it paints Neil Armstrong as nearly inhuman which is not what I think the intention was. Claire Foy, the actress who portrayed Jan Armstrong (I am not familiar with her) was also not someone I could connect to emotionally, I actually found her portrayal off-putting, especially the fem-splaining she did at times.

The supporting cast however was excellent, especially Jason Clarke as Ed White who was lost in the Apollo 1 fire (an event I thought the film handled superbly).

There is a sequence which made zero sense in the context of the film where we find a hippy encampment and a hipster black man both protesting the investment into NASA and the Vietnam War – of course I understand this was historically accurate, however literally every other minute of film time is either focused on Armstrong, his family, or the other Astronauts – in the context of the film this seemed unnecessary and forced.

I had heard of course about the deliberate omission of the planting of the American Flag preferring to focus instead on the ‘human triumph’ and I was admittedly rather upset/put off by that since there are two kinds of countries of Earth, those that have NOT put men on the Moon, and the United States – but in actuality this was the least of the weaknesses in the film and would not have added much to story, especially within the messaging of the film as edited.

Overall, I felt that this movie provides some great period-correct eye candy for space program fans like myself, but the peek into the lives behind the legends, as told in the film, was a downer as executed. I also felt that the film was particularly negative towards Buzz Aldrin, unnecessarily so.

I hoped that First Man would be an uplifting and inspirational movie, as I found The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 to have been – but that was a bridge too far for this film.

I do think that if you are going to see it, it should be experienced in a theater for the scale and the audio power in order to truly enjoy the flight and space sequences.

Spin Zone / McCain still shitting on conservatives from the grave
« on: August 29, 2018, 07:29:18 PM »
So I don't know if this is from himself prior to his passing or from his family, but in addition to refusing to have Trump at his funeral, his running mate in 2008 Gov. Palin has been told in no uncertain terms to stay away.

Petty self-serving BS, whether it was McCain himself or his family it speaks to his nature as a small and petty man.

Just when I thought I couldn't hold a lower opinion of him, they kick Palin to the curb - she's the only thing on that ticket I was voting FOR, the rest was AGAINST Obama - and this is how they treat her.

Pathetic, if only he would have left office and allowed the current Republican Governor Ducey to appoint someone who could build a record but instead he just held on.

Pilot Zone / Prop Seal Failure
« on: April 15, 2018, 04:07:57 PM »
I was leading a 3-ship formation aerobatic flight yesterday, we had been out for about 45 minutes, when I noted a prop surge on the downline of a Quarter-Clover Down figure.  We were about 3/4 mile offshore and about 15 miles over the ground away from our home airport.

I reported the surge to my wingmen and called knock-it-off and turned towards the coast.  I gave the lead to one of my wingmen so I could focus on flying/troubleshooting and have him navigate us under the Class B and back to our home field.  I noted that CHT's were on the low end of the green arc and I know that my engine does not like to be on either end of the green arc and suspected this was my issue.

1/3 of the way back I started to get oil on the windscreen, a light film in the beginning but quickly it went fully opaque, I told Lead I need a straight in and Tower was helpful.  I was now getting a little smoke in the cockpit, clearly heated/burning oil.

I made it to short final, rolled wings level and set it down, got off the runway and taxied back to hangar and shutdown uneventfully.

Watching the cockpit cam, it was 11.5 minutes from the prop surge to shutdown outside my hangar.  The oil on the windscreen appeared 3 minutes after the prop surge - and in 8 minutes approximately 10 of a total of 12 quarts of oil was lost overboard.

The after action report is that while we did most things right I made a few critical errors too - we had an alternate airport available that is a pain to get in and out of (controllers are not helpful) but it would have put me on the ground fully 3 minutes earlier.

Standard practice for formations is the distressed aircraft is lead so that the wingmen can provide support as needed, including nav or comms; had we followed this one or both wingmen would have noticed the oil on the plane and we would have figured out how substantial the leak was - I did not know how bad it was until I pulled of the runway and saw the wings.

I was focused on the low CHT and never really focused on Oil Temp/Px, even after the oil on the windscreen.  I believe this is because they were normal, through shutdown as it turns out, but I did not really focus on them.

After I had the smoke/smell in the cockpit and I had the airport in sight I descended from 2,000' towards TPA of 1,600' - although I was still nearly 3 miles out - we don't glide well in the Yaks and I am the most vocal proponent of altitude when in the pattern - I suspect it was because I really wanted to get the plane on the ground but I gave up some of the altitude I had which equates to time/options.

Mechanic and I will tear prop hub open tomorrow and see what we find - there was no overtemp, and Oil Temp and Px were normal through the entire flight, CHT never overtemped so we believe the engine is fine.

Spin Zone / Damn Donald, damn

https://apnews.com/0b31d47019564c738f440a6e307729aa/Trump-signs-$1.3-trillion-budget-after-threatening-veto

If people want to know what could put a chink in the Donald's relationship with his base/supporters, this is it.

100% mistake, he should have vetoed it and let all the Congresscritters hang on their own ineptitude.

This is a surrender of catastrophic proportions unless he pulls it out somehow by tossing it all back on the swampdwellers.

And Ryan and McConnell, last straw for them - they have capitulated and literally given the Dem's everything they wanted, truly, truly a complete shit basket.

Why the fuck elect Republicans if they are just going to govern as Dem's anyway?  Hint - this is why I no longer support the Republican Party in any fashion.

A pox on all of them.

Spin Zone / Another Snackbar Truck Attack, in NYC
« on: October 31, 2017, 02:52:54 PM »
So we have, yet another Allahu Ackbar truck attack, this time in NYC.  Even the uber-partisan lefty Mayor has to call it what it was.

Perp jumped out of truck  yelling Snackbar and brandishing fake weapons, probably expected to be killed - only got shot in the ass.

At some point folks might recognize we are actually in a war, whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

Prayers for the victims and survivors.

Spin Zone / Cato Institute on State of Free Speech - Very Sad
« on: October 31, 2017, 01:05:22 PM »
https://www.cato.org/blog/poll-71-americans-say-political-correctness-has-silenced-discussions-society-needs-have-58-have

Fascinating yet sad analysis from Cato Institute on the gap that separates us and the loss of true freedom of speech/political discourse - even the areas where there is common ground seem a bridge too far - this is the unfortunate and only possible result of the mean-spirited personalizing of so much of what should be 'just' politics - hopefully we can overcome but it seems as if the void may be too wide - I definitely self-censor not only my own posts but also my desire to reply to posts of friends since it seems we all have difficulty separating political disagreement from personal hate or fill-in-the-blank-ism - if we can't talk to each other respectfully and openly about important matters, how are we ever to move on to agreeing about what to do?

Spin Zone / Worst President in History

So Obama released 5 lifetime Club Gitmo members, in a clear violation of the law, to recover a guy who is now expected to plead guilty of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy - this after 6 soldiers are alleged to have died while trying to find/rescue the coward in the first place.

There are no words to describe this level of treachery and abandon of the true ideals we stand for.

All I know is that Brutus will have company in the mouth of Satan - pathetic fucking losers all.

Pilot Zone / Cessna TTx
« on: May 22, 2017, 05:30:36 PM »
Curious if any of our august fellow aviators have any time with the Cessna TTx or its' predecessor Columbia/Corvallis 400?

I have recently become aware of the apparent level of capability these little speedsters have (and without training wheels/chute) but due to the sales success of the Cirrus it seems a bit tough to find good pilot reports/stories for the Cessna.

Was playing around with the performance specs and FltPlan.com and it looks like it could make KSEE-KAAO in Wichita non-stop under decent conditions

Not in position to go get one at this time but it never hurts to have goals (even the Yak was but a dream at one point).

Thanks

Pilot Zone / Enjoyed some hard IMC and a GPS approach today
« on: May 06, 2017, 08:05:52 PM »
Went up to Chino today for the Planes of Fame Airshow (best damn warbird airshow in the US) with WifeyGimp, my friend Ryan whom I had not flown with yet and his hangar neighbor.  While we had a great time, the weather was marginal when we flew up to Chino (scud running), and at the end of the show the weather was looking less than marginal, so we decided to file and fly IFR on the way back.

Ryan's PA-32-300 fixed gear Saratoga is awesomely equipped (GTN 750/650 combo, GTX 345 with bluetooth out for Garmin Pilot on my Samsung Note 10).  He is a recently minted IFR pilot and was excited to have another Instrument Rated pilot with him - I got to hand fly the 'Toga in hard IMC for almost 40 minutes including the GPS 17 approach into Gillespie, I hadn't hand flown in actual for a long time, was a great flight.

We got along so well in the cockpit, and I apparently flew well enough, that we have committed to flying together more often to help us both stay current - nice way to do it.

Spin Zone / Fox's Ted Baxter FIRED - Not Fake News
« on: April 19, 2017, 02:39:01 PM »
So Fox has canned O'Reilly in the face of allegations of sexual harrasment, giving the loonies a much needed and very high profile scalp.

I am not saying anything about the merits or lack thereof of any accusations since I don't care for Ted's bloviating and obnoxious self-promotion, just interesting that the tac-nuke in the Left's tacklebox would appear to still have some legs.

Bye bye Ted, we hardly knew ye'.

Spin Zone / The Rehabilitation of Ted Cruz
« on: January 31, 2017, 10:07:22 PM »
I have to say that Ted Cruz has been awful good since the election in terms of helping to communicate the message and in being supportive of Trump's agenda.

I believe it is in part self-centered in that Cruz recognizes he has a substantial amount of ill will to overcome as a result of his behavior during the primaries, but even with that as a backdrop, I am amazed at how forceful and effective he is being both in the Senate and on the tube.
