Accident Review/Never Again (I hope..) / Re: Headwind gives you more speed?
« on: February 26, 2022, 02:56:38 PM »
In a windshear situation it's pitch/power.  In a significant shear it becomes useless.  Close to the ground and trying to interpret a trend on an ASI will end up putting the plane in the dirt.

You're drawing a general conclusion from a worst-case scenario.  It is true that in some circumstances a pilot may not have time to consult the ASI, but that doesn't make the gauge useless--it is still providing correct (if phase-shifted) information.  In any event, we certainly agree much more than disagree, so I am not interested in getting into a pissing contest with you over something like this.

In true windshear the ASI becomes useless, it's pitch and power that matter.

I partially disagree with that statement, although I think that the group generally fully understands the issue and agrees that the video (whatever it says--I didn't watch it either) is in error.

Anyway, pitch and power certainly are primary concerns, but one cannot ignore the airspeed indicator.  Reason being, the ASI is showing the wind that the plane is flying in at the moment.  That wind might change again at any moment, but whatever it says must be believed and accounted for, especially if the airspeed drops when close to the ground.  In other words, apply pitch and power as required to maintain enough lift to stay flying.

Edit:  I do agree that the ASI might be momentarily in error if the wind vector changes too fast for it. I still would not ignore it, though, because even though it may not be stabilized, it is showing the trend.

No, a tailwind increases your ground speed but not your airspeed.

A headwind decreases your ground speed but does nothing to your airspeed.  Pitch and power changes influence your airspeed.

Yes.  Once you are flying you are one with the air and cannot even tell if you are IN a headwind except by checking your groundspeed.

No AR15 needed...

That meme is a true story.  Yesterday on the news they showed a line of people waiting at a Ukraine police station where they were to be issued a rifle (AK) on request.  Evidently no questions asked--one person interviewed had never fired a gun before and didn't even know how to operate his new rifle.  I hope the police were smart enough not to take names of people getting rifles, since those sorts of records would be among the first seized by the Russians.

This, of course, is good evidence why the Second Amendment is FAR from outdated, and points to the need of the people not only to be armed, but also competent with their rifles.  And I mean "rifles".  Shotguns and pistols won't cut it.

Justin Trudeau has a red headed grandson?

I presume he meant to write "her ginger grandson", referring to Prince Harry, who I guess is not a prince any more.

Edit:  Wait a minute.  You're just screwing around, aren't you?

Without comment, even.

A friend of mine that works at the local news paper has often expressed his regrets that review editors were some of the first people cut to pare expenses.

Being on the coast, our local paper often has articles on nautical issues, local fishing conditions, and the like.  One time there was an above-the-fold front page headline about a local sailor who was going to "Circumvent the Earth".  Even I gave them some gas over that one.

I worked with a guy at a defense contractor who was an English major but was now an engineer.  The errors in technical document drove him nuts.

Years ago when I worked at IBM we had an internal network (virtual machine) on which there were forums, much like today's internet forums.  One forum, called "nitpick forum" was for people to post examples of official IBM writings that contained grammatical or usage errors.  The poster was supposed to post the example and then point out the required correction.  One rule for the forum, though, (NOT unwritten) was that the poster himself was expected to use perfect English in his post, and if he made a mistake, he became fair game.  I learned quite a lot there, actually.  To this day I try hard to write correctly, even in forum posting.  Sometimes a clunker gets through, but it's not through lack of effort.

The lack of capitalization and punctuation drives me fucking nuts.

I'm with you.  If I see a post in a forum with no capitals I just skip it, and, depending on the forum, add the writer to my ignore list.  Like most here, I was taught to double-space; I can't even imagine why it would occur to someone to change that rule.   I think there is another new rule, probably unwritten:  all memes must contain at least one spelling, grammatical, or punctuation error.  I can't count the number of memes I've seen, otherwise pretty clever, that were ruined (to me) by a glaring mistake.

It’s about inertia.  When it hits something, the end yaws over. That makes the round tumble into the target.  Or is there another reason my range targets never had round holes like my pistol rounds do?

If your bullets were tumbling before hitting the target, something was drastically wrong. Don't know what that might have been (other than twist, as mentioned) but if shooting paper, one should see nothing but nice round bullet holes.

Tumbing is caused by insufficient twist for the length of the bullet.  It has absolutely nothing to do with "goes so fast"

Exercise for the student:  why are the HPBT bullets like the Sierra matchking not recommended for hunting?

Insufficient twist, or also passing through the trans-sonic region, where the bullet goes from supersonic to sonic.  This is a known problem for M14/M1A shooters who try to shoot long range with SMK 168s.  They just can't push those bullets with enough beans to stay supersonic all the way to the target.  I've never tried it, but I guess the thing to do is go to 175s (or larger).

SMKs are technically "hollow points", but just because the manufacturing process naturally leaves a little hole at the tip.  They are not hunting-style hollow points that are designed to expand on impact with game.

What or who is a Zumbo?  You don’t think he is sincere now?

Jim Zumbo was a hunting and firearms writer, writing mostly for Outdoor Life.  He also hosted a hunting-oriented TV show.  Anyway, he went off one time (in 2007) about how evil AR15s were, and how nobody needed one, etc.  He caused quite a stir and was fired from Outdoor Life and his TV show.   Ironically, Ted Nugent visited him and supposedly got him straightened out, whereupon he apologized profusely for being ignorant and short-sighted.

I never believed Zumbo's apology, and I don't believe this guy's either.

His original video pissed me off to no end, and I don't believe his apology.  Sounds like Zumbo.

I'm the opposite of a Bourbon snob.  I can, and do, drink anything and like it.  It's a gift.  Sometimes friends will gift me a nice bottle of expensive Bourbon and I never have the heart to tell them that for me a twenty dollar Costco bottle of Jim Beam is the cat's meow.  Expensive booze is wasted on me.

The FAA is going to look at the logs and may look to Piper to publish an SB or AD to address this. The nuts backed off and only had a few threads left.

Nuts backed off?  Is that confirmed?  (Not officially, of course)  Just what we need--a hundred hour AD requiring a mechanic to check and see if the carburetor is still firmly attached.

Dennis Miller is a rabid gun-hater, so if he inexplicably fell off the face of the Earth it wouldn't bother me in the least.  I even refused to watch Monday Night Football when that POS was on it.
