Spin Zone / Palin Working to Defeat Paul Ryan
« on: May 08, 2016, 11:14:58 AM »
Quote from: CNN/Sarah Palin
"His political career is over but for a miracle because he has so disrespected the will of the people, and as the leader of the GOP, the convention, certainly he is to remain neutral, and for him to already come out and say who he will not support is not a wise decision of his," Palin continued.

I have a few problems with this. The first is that Sarah Palin is out to destroy Paul Ryan strictly because he won't fall in line with Trump right now. Ryan said that he's not yet ready to support Trump, not that he won't support him at all. Ryan actually said he was hoping to find a way to support Trump and has a meeting setup with him.

The next problem I have is with the overall mentality by Trump supporters that if you don't support Trump, you must be destroyed. Trump supporters seem to be taking this hardline approach in general. This is why I said in another thread that I wouldn't be bullied into voting for Trump. The guilt trip won't work. Palin's attitude towards this is not a great way to unite the party and convince people to support Trump. This is more of a liberal tactic of going after the person for not supporting them.

Paul Ryan has turned out to not be the conservative stalwart he made himself out to be. Working to defeat Paul Ryan in order to elect an actual conservative is a worthwhile effort and if Palin had said that's why she wanted to help his opponent, I would've been okay with that. But that's not what she said nor is that her approach.

Spin Zone / U.S. Forces On Ground in Yemen
« on: May 06, 2016, 03:23:18 PM »
Quote from: Washington Post
The Pentagon has placed a small number of U.S. advisors on the ground in Yemen to support Arab forces battling al-Qaeda, military officials said on Friday, signaling a new American role in that country’s multi-sided civil war.

Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said U.S. personnel had been in the country for about two weeks, supporting Yemeni and Emirati forces that are fighting a pitched battle against militants near the southeastern port city of Mukalla.

“We view this as short-term,” Davis told reporters.

Officials said the U.S. military is also providing Emirati forces with medical, intelligence and maritime support, and is flying surveillance and aerial refueling missions. It has also staged a ships from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit off Yemen’s coast. The flotilla includes the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship with Marine infantry and aircraft, and two destroyers, the USS Gravely and the USS Gonzalez.

Given the recent discussions on how some here think the U.S. shouldn't be involved in every conflict in the world, I thought this was interesting. We're providing advisors, medical, intelligence and maritime support. What are the thoughts on this limited role as opposed to sending in thousands?

Spin Zone / Guccifer: "It was easy" to breach Clinton server
« on: May 04, 2016, 04:07:23 PM »
Quote from: Fox News
The infamous Romanian hacker known as “Guccifer,” speaking exclusively with Fox News, claimed he easily – and repeatedly – breached former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server in early 2013.

"For me, it was easy ... easy for me, for everybody," Marcel Lehel Lazar, who goes by the moniker "Guccifer," told Fox News from a Virginia jail where he is being held.

Guccifer’s potential role in the Clinton email investigation was first reported by Fox News last month. The hacker subsequently claimed he was able to access the server – and provided extensive details about how he did it and what he found – over the course of a half-hour jailhouse interview and a series of recorded phone calls with Fox News. Fox News could not independently confirm Lazar’s claims.
This is interesting. If what he's claiming is true and that he's willing to cooperate with the FBI, this could very well provide a lot more evidence to the FBI against not just Clinton, but several of her aides as well, including Blumenthal.

Spin Zone / Trump On Cruz to SCOTUS: "I'd have to think about it"
« on: May 02, 2016, 05:39:53 PM »
Trump was asked a question about whether or not he'd nominate Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court if he was elected president. His response: "I don't know, I'd have to think about it".

Quote from: The Hill
Donald Trump had a tepid response when asked if he would consider GOP presidential rival Ted Cruz for the Supreme Court, should the businessman win the White House.

"I don't know, I'd have to think about it," Trump told the Daily Mail in an interview Monday.

"There's a whole question of uniting and there's a whole question as to temperament," Trump continued. "He's certainly a smart guy, but there's also a temperament issue.

We've discussed this before but this may be the first time that Trump has actually commented on it. If Trump gets the nomination his attitude may change and he may be more in favor of nominating Cruz to the SCOTUS. Most of us agree that Cruz would be a great addition to the SCOTUS and an equal replacement for Antonin Scalia, which the Democrats would hate.

Spin Zone / Sanders Plans To Win Nomination at Convention
« on: April 05, 2016, 01:27:56 PM »
Quote from: The Hill
Bernie Sanders's campaign manager insisted Tuesday that the Vermont senator will win the Democratic nomination over Hillary Clinton at the party's convention this summer.
Let's assume for the sake of discussion that Sanders does win the nomination. Who has the best chance to beat him? Do Trump's numbers improve in a head to head vs. Sanders instead of Clinton?

I don't think it's likely that Sanders will win the nomination, but this is turning out to be a crazy election year.

Spin Zone / Trump Campaign Manager Charged with Battery
« on: March 29, 2016, 09:04:23 PM »
Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandoski, was charged with battery today in Jupiter, Florida. He's accused of grabbing the arm of reporter Michelle Fields at a Trump rally in Florida several weeks back.

I'm glad to see he was charged. The police released video from the security camera which is the best angle by far and clearly shows Lewandoski grabbing her and pulling her. The Trump campaign continued to say he was innocent and nothing happened. Pretty sad that he won't fire his campaign manager over this.

Spin Zone / Sanders' Sweeps
« on: March 27, 2016, 02:39:57 PM »
Bernie Sanders swept Washington state, Alaska and Hawaii this weekend. Huge wins for him and keeps his momentum going. This will certainly keep him in the race and boost his fundraising. While Clinton still has a strong delegate lead, I'm sure this didn't sit well with her campaign. If he keeps his current momentum and continues to win states, I wonder how much support he'll have for a third party run once he loses to Clinton? I know it's not likely, but would be interesting to see as it could be a Ross Perot situation for the Democrats this time around.

Quote from: Politico
Hawaii, with its 25 delegates, was slightly more front and center: One of Sanders’ top surrogates, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, worked to swing the state in his favor with campaign appearances and television ads focused on veterans.
I don't honestly understand how any veteran could support Sanders. He stands for everything that veteran's have worked so hard to defend.

Spin Zone / Ben Shapiro Resigns From Breitbart News
« on: March 13, 2016, 09:58:10 PM »
For those not following the story, Breitbart News' Michelle Fields claims she was grabbed and thrown to the ground as she was attempting to ask Trump questions as he was leaving a rally. The incident is on audio and video tape (admittedly the video tape is a little hard to see) and Michelle Fields filed a police report over the incident. She's alleging that Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is the one that threw her to the ground. The Trump campaign has denied it. Breitbart News not only wouldn't stand by her but instructed their reporters to stop tweeting about it. Now, not only has Michelle Fields resigned, but so has editor-at-large Ben Shapiro.

Spin Zone / Trump Releases 7 Point Healthcare Plan
« on: March 02, 2016, 06:33:45 PM »
https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions/healthcare-reform

After reading through it, it sounds like a fairly decent plan. He recognizes that a straight up repeal isn't going to work and that you have to offer a replacement to go with it. He does this and it's reasonable. This plan will definitely take us off the edge of a single payer system.
