I’m not for legalization like Rush and Anthony, but that’s a sidebar to the OP.
I think Trump made this designation without thought to drug matters per se. I think he made that designation due to the rampant crime against Americans both on the border and inland, their criminal role in exporting violent drug gangs like MS-13 to the a United States, and for the rampant growth in ISIS-style terror tactics used by these gangs immediately south of our southern border. Throw in the Mexican government’s corruption and complicit cooperation with these cartels, and you have lawlessness of epic proportions.
I had a client from Mexico that owned a textile business in North Carolina. Every quarter they would come up to NC to visit their subsidiary, and of course visit with us.
I mentioned a family vacation that we took in the 1970s from Matamoros to Monterrey to Torreón to Chihuahua to Ciudad Juarez. Basically along the northern 1/3rd of Mexico.
The client (who lived in Mexico City) said adamantly that they would NEVER make that trip due to the danger from the cartels.
Think about that. A Mexican native would refuse to travel in at least one third of his country!
I think Trump sees how Mexico is turning into a southern Somalia, and wants to be proactive (how I’m not sure) in preventing that disease from infiltrating our country any more than it already has.
