Spin Zone / wow - quite the miracle

Nick Saban tested positive for covid-19... followed by 3 negative tests.

Kind of makes me wonder how many of the positive test results were actually false positives.

Spin Zone / USPS fun
« on: October 16, 2020, 12:15:03 PM »
I ordered a gizmo from Bestbuy.  They shipped it UPS, with final delivery via the USPS.  ok, that's worked in the past, but about once a week the mailman delivers a piece of mail to my house when the addressee clearly is a different house different street different number.

Last Friday (9 Oct), the package was marked "delivered" but was no where to be seen at my house.

To Bestbuy's credit, when informed of the failure to deliver, they sent another one.  Unfortunately they shipped this one USPS all the way.

Tuesday (13 Oct) the original package shows up on my front steps.  But the replacement had finally been picked up by USPS earlier that day and so was on the way...  (I figure that whoever got the original package Friday gave it back to the mailman Saturday, who waited until Tuesday to give it to me)

Early Wednesday morning, the replacement package arrives at the local distribution center (not too far from my house)...and then it get sent back out to the Nashua hub... Thursday it arrives in Wisconsin... and Friday afternoon it's back at the local distrubtion center...not sure why the package got a side trip from Wilmington MA to Wisconsin and back.

I guess Bestbuy got its money's worth on those shipping charges...

(and yes, I'll be hand-delivering the replacement package back to the local bestbuy...if I ever get it)

Spin Zone / Is anyone really tracking the number of recovered cases?
« on: October 12, 2020, 07:52:17 AM »
It's easy to report the number of people who test positive (even though some people confuse number of people with number of positive tests)

It's easy to report the number of covid-19-related deaths (even though a lot of people don't distinquish between covid-19 causing the death and merely having covid-19 at time of death)

But there doesn't seem to be a particularly robust, well-defined, proceess for collecting/reporting information related to the number of people who have recovered.

World-o-meter referenced this source (https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ERD/Pages/OHA-changes-recovered-cases-reporting.aspx).  This highlights the problem with no meaningful information wrt the number of people that are recovered.

Another problem with the data relates to the age of people with active infections.  Good luck getting a good handle of that...

COVID-19 is more serious for someone who is 80 versus someone who is 18 (kind of like with just about any infection)

Spin Zone / Cases vs Deaths
« on: October 07, 2020, 06:06:55 AM »
as macabre as this is (but it is halloween season...), it is interesting to look at covid-19 deaths vs cases over time (source is world-o-meter)

Spin Zone / Everything causes cancer?
« on: October 07, 2020, 05:11:13 AM »
So I'm just perusing a website, locking for suitable cabinet hinges and noticed this warning:

"WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/wood. "

I just love the "known to the State of California" statement.

I would love to see the science behind "knowing" that wood dust causes cancer.... because we know that the people in la-la-land are all about the science.

wouldn't it be easier for the "State of California" to list the things that they don't "know" causes cancer?

Spin Zone / Laying the groundwork
« on: October 03, 2020, 05:23:15 AM »
Now "experts" are starting to publically worry that people won't take the covid-19 vaccine when one becomes available.  They are warning that the pandemic will be with us forever if people don't get vaccinated.

Why do I get the feeling that the power-hungry pukes will use this to implement forced-vaccinations?

Spin Zone / sprialing out of control
« on: October 02, 2020, 06:12:05 AM »
In today's Boston Herald (2 October 2020), there are a couple of articles that highlight the changing goalposts and ever more unjustified measures.

One is that Boston officials are now targetting small gatherings are sources of "outbreaks".  Apparently, large gatherings aren't the problem, but the small ones are.  think about that.

The second, the peoples republic of cambridge is now requiring masks in public at all times.  Even outside, even if there is no one within 100yds of you, you must wear a mask.  Oh, btw, it's ok to not wear a mask while dining.  think about that too.

Spin Zone / more whining about inequality
« on: September 28, 2020, 04:45:17 AM »
now whiners are complaining that there isn't enough covid-19 testing and tracing in Boston's "Black community"

I wonder if the so-called leaders have figured out the potential problems with contact tracing...

I wonder if the so-called leaders have figured out what lead to an "uptick" in positive cases.

I wonder if the so-called leaders truly understand how serious covid-19 actually is.

assuming worldometer is correct, we've passed the deathtoll of the '68-'69 Hong Kong Flu (worldwide deathtoll)... albeit there are more than twice as many people across the globe.

Spin Zone / contact tracing

Various "smart" devices have embedded capabilities for contact tracing.

When all this covid-19 panic crap is over, will Apple, Google, et al remove the contact tracing functionality from their "smart" devices?

Spin Zone / so NOW the government cares about the flu?
« on: September 17, 2020, 09:33:21 AM »
Today's briefing by Gov Baker (today is 17 Sept) included discussion of the importance of getting flu vaccinations.

In the past the whole flu vaccination stuff was "ho hum, we don't care"

NOW it's important.

Kind of underscores my observation from beginning:  either our society's consideration of the flu was negligent in the past or we are overreacting to covid-19.  You can't legitimately claim we were treating (no pun) flu correctly before and also claim the reaction to covid-19 isn't an over-the-top.
