Spin Zone / Re: Hillary's Latest Attack is Faltering

Kristen,     National debt when Obama was sworn in, $10.6 Trillion,  National debt as of 10/20/16  $19.8 trillion.  Increase from Obama's inauguration, 87% with three months to go, he has doubled the national debt unless you want to quibble over a few hundred billion.

You need to go to the source, not democracy now or occupy democrat or what ever site you use, they lead you astray.

http://treasurydirect.gov/NP/debt/search?startMonth=01&startDay=20&startYear=2009&endMonth=10&endDay=23&endYear=2016

Your numbers and Kristen's aren't that far apart and are reasonably accurate.  Why the dig at her source?

Tax revenues increased after the Bush tax cuts and they have increased after just about every tax cut in recent history.

Although that is fun to say, historic data doesn't bear that out.  Tax cuts MAY have a stimulus effect, particularly in a booming economy, but it is nowhere near a hard and fast rule.  Tax cuts cause an immediate loss in revenue.  Beneficial effects (if any) take years to show up.  While President Reagan did indeed cut income tax rates (justifiably IMHO) he also increased taxes and eliminated a number of deductions that resulted in increases in revenue.  Of course, President Bush #1 had to go back on the "Read my lips" promise to deal with budget deficits.

http://money.cnn.com/2010/09/08/news/economy/reagan_years_taxes/

As far as the Bush 2 tax cuts, they had the effect of adding to the reduction in revenue during 2001, 2002 and 2003.  Revenue did not reach 2000 levels until 2005.  The state of the economy has FAR more impact on revenue than changing tax rates.  The economy was coming off the tech crash of 1999/2000.  The Bush tax cuts did nothing to increase revenue during that time period. I believe you are confusing correlation and causation.

SPENDING INCREASED TOO, THAT IS WHY WE HAVE A DEBT PROBLEM.  Tax increases will further slow the economy and lower revenues in the long term.   You can't tax a country into prosperity.

Can't disagree with the first part and last part.  The middle part is certainly speculation.

Obama owns the national debt and people are sick of his whining that it is Bush's fault, he had 8 years to fix it, in his first 2 years he owned congress too.  No excuses, Obama is a failure.

Lots of people "own" the debt, I don't lay blame on one particular person, it has been a group effort.  The 2008/2009 crash was certainly a major contributor, probably to the tune of increasing the total debt by +/- $5 trillion.  So was the Afghanistan war, Iraq war, entitlements, increased unemployment benefits, increased SNAP costs and Medicare Part B expansion.  As far as spending, the President/Congress has only ever reduced spending (over the last 50 years) in 2010, 2012 & 2013, when compared to the year before.  Damn that Obama!  ;)

Your  and my grand children are the ones that will have to deal with this mess Obama  caused by many administrations and probably the resultant revolution when it hits the fan and the millions getting free shit now get the gravy train shut down because the US is forced to default.

With a minor (and accurate) change, this is true.

Spin Zone / Re: Dead People Voting

Straw man. You ignored my second condition. You also didn't answer mine and Gary's question.

I really don't expect an answer, it is abundantly clear that voter ID does nothing to solve fraud for mail/absentee balloting.

Voting should be as easy as possible, and no system can be completely fraud free.  Americans are amazingly honest when it comes to voting.  Why fix a problem that does not exist?

To go completely off on a tangent for this forum, today was a spectacular day to fly in southeastern PA.  So... the Quakertown Pilots Association marshaled it's resources and put together a flight of 5 planes to trek to the Sentimental Journey fundraising fly-in breakfast at Lock Haven PA.  Absolutely gorgeous, cool, CAVU and smooth air.  One of those days that once trimmed up the airplane just runs on rails and you can sit back and watch the scenery unfold.  A good turnout of planes and locals.

Overall a most excellent adventure.  We are so blessed to have the opportunity to be pilots.

That is all, y'all can now resume the usual partisan sniping!   ;)

Not Clinton, not Trump, probably Johnson. I'm not much for voting for one terrible candidate to keep another possibly more terrible candidate out of the white house. I'd rather vote my conscience and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm starting to warm to that idea.

Personally, I don't believe electing either Hillary or Trump will be the major disaster some claim it will be.  The House will remain under Republican control, the Senate will remain somewhat equally divided.  Gridlock will continue on major policy items, but the basic necessities of government will continue.  Yes, we have quite a few major problems out there that should be addressed, but my feeling is that neither candidate is the one that will truly fix them.

The reason that most people won't vote third party is the historical fact that none have ever garnered significant support, so people tend to write them off as un-electible - whether they are qualified or not.  Maybe it is time that we voters show the two major parties that a third party is viable and they (the Democrats & Republicans) ought to consider that fact and start thinking about the problems that us "common folk" see everyday.  Both parties need to get past the "not invented here - therefore I'm against it" and move on to actually solve problems.

For all those Donald supporters.  Is there a Rosetta stone or magic decoder ring that would allow us to figure out when the Donald is just using bluster, opinion, sarcasm, or just otherwise joking?  How to we tell what he truly believes?  There have been so many contradictions, deflections and walk-backs that it gets pretty confusing to sort this out.

Well, conservatives could prevent that by supporting, and voting for Trump.

They could also soften the effect by getting on board to confirm Merrick Garland, who by all accounts is a middle of the road, open-minded and qualified candidate to the Supreme Court.  Judge Garland is likely to be far less liberal than anyone Hillary is likely to nominate.  But, then again, the message I heard was "let the next President decide".

People are angry because the sources of unbiased information have been slowly and insidiously removed from our access.  Everything is spun.  We know this, and it makes us feel helpless and thus angry.

When has there ever been unbiased sources of information?  Spin has existed since the first word was written.  If anything, the explosion of information sources gives all of us so many, varied and different viewpoints.  I'm not clear how this has been removed from our access. No doubt it does take more effort to sort though all those views and try to rationally glean out what might be facts verses opinion.

How would you feel if you knew that all your cockpit instruments were slightly if not very inaccurate?  You would be forced to fly differently, but all your decisions and actions would be guesses, and the only truth you'd have would be what you could actually see.  Same with our media and politics.  People look around, see what they see, and it doesn't square with what the media is feeding us.

Recipe for anger.

There is some truth to that.  Spin is a well practiced art all across the political spectrum.

My little one-horse town is holding a special election!  Set up in late May, the election is set to take place during the first week of August.  The Republican backers of the initiative want to change the city council of the Steinholme Metropolis from 7 at-large members to a ward system, with something on the order of 25 members.  Looking forward to voting this trash DOWN.

How big is your town?  Any rationale for a change like this?  If you are really a one-horse town, the logic escapes me on why you would need a 25 member governing board.

I reread my post and I didn't get the switcheroo of timeline you did. Perhaps it's the sleep deprivation talking.

Congratulate me: I became a dad again, 6 days ago.

 ;D :D consider yourself congratulated!!  ;D ;D

Best wishes!!  I'm way past the parent stage, was wonderful though.

Don't believe we have yet hit our peak.  I might change my mind when we have to build walls to keep people in.

I use to think that but more and more I'm convinced they are one in the same.

:)  Pretty much.  The rhetoric is different but the concepts are the same.

I believe Mr. Beck is correct.

“I think people think that I’m nuts,” Beck also said.

I'm sure Mr. Cruz knew nothing about it and had no role.  ;)

Do find it rather ironic that many on the right have stated that they want the President to follow his responsibilities stated in the Constitution - except - in this situation of nominating a candidate for the SCOTUS.  Did hear Mr. McConnell mention something along the lines that the President should not propose a nominee and that the American people need to be involved in this decision.  Pretty weak argument since I believe the President and all the members of the Senate were indeed duly elected by the American people to make just these kinds of decisions.

It is absolutely clear that the President has the responsibility and ability to nominate a person for the SCOTUS.  I believe he could even do a recess appointment, although I not so sure if the timing is there.  The Senate can do what it pleases with the nomination, delay/defer, deny or approve.  That is completely within the Senate’s control.

So why would the leadership of the Senate urge the President to shirk his Constitutional responsibilities?  Is there a lack of qualified candidates?  Perhaps there isn’t enough time for the Senate to thoughtfully execute it’s own responsibilities in the process?  Is the Senate content with having an undermanned SCOTUS operate for more than a year, considering many of the important cases pending?  Believe that any logical and informed person would have to say no to all of these questions.  The only plausible reason remaining is ideology.  Do find it very intriguing that the majority leadership of Senate wishes to make it’s decisions based on ideology and not fact or reason.

This is a no lose scenario for the President.  By proposing a qualified nominee, the President can either have the nominee confirmed -or- we will have a situation unfold, for the whole county to see, just how the current Senate does it’s business.  Should the Senate decide to just ignore the Presidents nomination, the Democrats will have a golden opportunity to use that in the upcoming elections, I fear that will not play well for the Republicans.  Should the Senate decide to actually hold hearings on the nominee and drag it out for many months, a similar situation exists.  The Democrats will hammer on the qualifications and experience of the nominee, the Republicans will have, IMHO, a difficult time refuting this.  Again, it boils down to the fact that the Senate Republican leadership will be left with trying to justify a decision based on ideology, a difficult position to explain to the American public.

;) Of course the President could go totally off the reservation and do a recess appointment and nominate Ted Cruz - THAT would be interesting to watch. ;)
