Spin Zone / Re: New Years Eve: What is Everyone Doing?
« on: January 01, 2024, 08:21:16 AM »
Fighting back a cold and happy to have made it through another year.  Mourning the loss of some friends and family.  Some successes, some things not so successful.  Overall more wins than losses.  Not happy about the overall state of the world and the country.  Frustrated that I can't do anything about it.  Worried about retirement... do I retire next year or go another couple of years?  Wife is still chronically ill but we're trying to remain positive.  Really not looking forward to what this country will go through in 2024.  But very happy to have friends here in The Zone who are more or less sane.

So sorry for your loss, Rush.  And Number7, get well soon.

So sorry, Rush. Can't think of a better way to go. she was blessed.

So are you.

We were very blessed to have her for a mother. Only Jesus and the Virgin Mary had a more pure soul.  That’s what I think anyway.

<sigh>

The Berlin wall was used to keep people on one side of the wall... using deadly force.

The "keep people in" vs "keep people out" isn't relevant.  But, as I said, apparently too subtle.

Keeping people in is imprisonment. Keeping people out is protecting your own sovereignty. Big difference.

Here's immigration in a nutshell:

1)  Everyone must enter legally.   No exceptions.

2)  Only admit those who have something to offer our society.  For instance, highly skilled individuals.   We already have an abundance of low skill workers.

3)  Those who want to enter must agree to learn, or already speak english.  They must also be willing to learn how our laws work.  We are not interested in how it was where they came from.

4)  They must be able to provide for themselves.  No depending on getting into our welfare system.

5)  During their time as a Permanent Legal Resident, if they commit any crimes, prompt deportation.

Think this sounds a bit too harsh?   Go to almost any other country and look at their immigration requirements.

I gotta think tenure was from the old days when to be a professor you adhered to a higher standard of moral and professional conduct than expected from the general public and tenure was earned and deserved. Most professors were probably male and so had families to support. Professor salaries are lower than other white collar professions so tenure as job security was a trade off for the lower pay. It made sense. Today the quality of many professors is in the toilet and it’s become a lazy person’s easy mode career for the nonproductive.

Both :)  Academic misconduct (like faking research data), sexual misconduct, or some felonies like misappropriating funds can get you removed.  Even if you suck at teaching they most they can do is give you an office in the basement and (ironically) overload you with teaching (which you suck at) until you leave.

Tenure should allow faculty to say and do research on things that are currently unpopular.  That's "academic freedom".  Yeah, she should not be in a position that represents her university and say something as stupid and wrong as she did.  She was rightly removed from that position.  However, as tenured faculty she should have the freedom to say it.  Stupid and wrong as it is.
Tenure is an artificial construct, and shouldn’t be bulletproof.  If you cause discredit to your institution, create or embrace a physically dangerous culture, or damage fundraising or recruiting because you have diarrhea of the mouth, they should be free to can your ass.

I wasn’t around for WW2 but my parents were. The direct impact on me was my father and mother traveling to attend the reunions of Dad’s army buddies. I sensed a tight bond among those guys that I didn’t understand as a child.

So you spend a couple years among a group of random strangers, and for the rest of your lives you act like you were all born from the same mother?  They were in their 80s and still traveling all over the country for those reunions.  Made no sense to me as a kid but now I know.

RIP Dad, and all who fought in that war.

It's time we remove ourselves from the UN and kick them out of our country. The overwhelming majority of member countries hate us. Fuck them.

I suspect what we would actually get from a CoS is abortion on demand, stricter gun control and illegal alien voting rights.

Please go read on how a Convention of States actually works.

We ended up going to Fkg Cracker Barrell. Big feast planned at daughter’s but grandson came up with the flu. It was too late to get a Turkey so we headed out for Chinese, and they were closed! So Cracker Cracker it was.

Definitely miss turkey leftovers and turkey w/ mayonnaise sammich.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  Today is my wife’s birthday, Thursday is Thanksgiving, and on Friday I’m heading out on a long weekend to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I don’t think I’ll be loitering here too much over the next few days, so cheers!

Congratulations! Have fun! Happy Thanksgiving to all.
