Spin Zone / IPhone battery
« on: November 30, 2021, 02:19:54 PM »
My Iphone warned me about a low battery at 4pm.  That is the earliest it ever gave that warning, except for when I ran the GPS all morning without plugging it in.

I checked the battery stats and the biggest battery user today was "Exposure Notification".  I had head of this, but I thought you had to manually turn it on.

It is OFF now and the phone is on the charger.

It has been in the local paper all week.
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/education/2021/11/27/black-jrotc-student-cant-wear-uniform-because-he-wont-cut-his-hair/8656378002/

I know of a lot of white kids that had to get their hair cut if they wanted to join the service.  In fact, I knew a bunch of white kids that had to get their hair cut when they DIDN'T want to enlist, but were drafted.

In case it is behind a paywall, here is the gist:
Quote
A Black JROTC student says he's being harassed after refusing to cut off his hair

Logan Rentz thought a lot about joining the U.S. Army before he entered his freshman year at Spruce Creek High School. In fact, he couldn't stop thinking about it — so he decided to join the JROTC program at the school to test it out.

But when he was told he'd have to cut his hair to wear the uniform that's characteristic of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, he was surprised.

Logan, who is Black, wears his hair in locs and usually ties it up in a bun. The style is also referred to as "dreadlocks," but that term has historically negative connotations. The News-Journal is using the term locs because that's the descriptor the Rentz family uses.

"I thought they were playing around when they first said it," Logan said.

He and his mom, Keshia, quickly figured out it wasn't a joke. He ended up having to make a choice: his hair and the ties it has to his family and their culture, or the class that he was so excited to join and where he had already developed friendships.

The 15-year-old chose his hair over the uniform, triggering what the family says has been weeks of what they view as harassment centered around a policy they haven't been able to get a clear answer on. Now, with their attorney, they're considering filing federal and state complaints.

Spin Zone / Is anyone else sickof the phrase "herd immunity"?
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:11:09 PM »
 herd hûrd►

    n.
A group of cattle or other domestic animals of a single kind kept together for a specific purpose.
    n.
A number of wild animals of one species that remain together as a group.

Why are we being treated like a herd?  What kind of domestic or wild animal are we?  Sheep?  Cattle?  And for what single purpose are they keeping us together?

Spin Zone / Climate Change; a poll
« on: September 01, 2021, 05:38:41 AM »
I often say things like "nobody disputes the climate is changing", but am I talking out my ass when I say that

I know.  The poll questions suck and leaves out how most people really feel.  So briefly, what is your opinion on whether it is happening and is it a good thing or bad thing (for most humans) or makes no difference.  For me, it is a big concern because my house is about 30 inches above sea level about 150 feet from the intracoastal waterway.

How can I NOT take this seriously?

Spin Zone / Friend dies of Covid

More of an acquaintance than a friend, but we did talk fairly often.  I was surprised to see this in the paper today since I had not talked to him for several weeks.
He didn't think he needed or trusted the vaccine either.

Spin Zone / New Covid Surge
« on: July 22, 2021, 04:33:11 AM »
Our county hospital broke a record for Covid admissions on Tuesday.
Yesterday, they broke that record.

90% of admissions are from unvaccinated people.  They now have 79 admitted patients.  Twelve of them are on ventilators, which makes me think those cases are severe, as opposed to asymptomatic.

I read where one doctor said the last thing they often hear from patients prior to intubation is "Can I get the vaccine now", to which the doctor says "sorry, it's too late now".

I think this is good news.  I have often said most of our social problems are caused by too many people.  Darwin may prove to be our savior.

I thought that pilots had a better understanding of risk avoidance.   "Yeah, 600,000 people have died from the virus, but four people got blood clots from the vaccine" so I'll take my chance with the virus.

Spin Zone / How many ways does the government give people money?
« on: May 02, 2021, 11:49:56 AM »
I'm not talking about wages or pensions or purchasing or construction contracts or even Social Security, because that is not "giving money".  It is paying back a contractual debt.

I'm talking about things like:
SSI,
WIC
EBT,
Medicaid,
Obamacare subsidies,
disability
Unemployment compensation

What other programs are designed to take money from some people and give it to other people?  And how much does that all add up to?

What are the odds that this will pass?

Even if it does pass, I suspect they will attach so many strings as to make it a joke.
But I suspect it won't pass, and among others I suspect John Roberts will be one of the deciding votes to take it down.

I hope I'm wrong.
